The military, for Black people that have never been in the military or encountered some racism in the military, has always carried with it a negative stigma. I myself joined the Airforce, and had some of the best times of my life. Additionaly it is because I joined the Airforce that I have a job that pays a high salary. I encourage African Americans to join the Airforce for these reasons.
1. The Airforce is less racist than outside in regular society. This may seem counterintuitive but this is because rules set up in the Airforce actually give African Americans a better chance of success in the Airfoce. I am not saying that racism does not exist but I have an over 780 credit score, earn over $70,000 a year, never been commited of a crime, dress well, speak well, and I was turned down by six people outside of the military when applying for housing in the supposedly liberal BAY AREA! You do not even want to get me started on when I started a company. Still I digress, the Airforce is also set up to prosecute the appearance of racism. For example my Black superior officer at one point told me that if you are one of the few (and you undoubtedbly will be) Black people serving in a squadron and you are the only person cleaning floors, then you can report that as a infringement on your rights and actually have someone act on your behalf; unlike in civilian life. Believe if or not you learn a great deal more about yourself, other races, and the world when you join the Airforce. I was screaming bullshiiiit at the beginning, but the Airforce gave me structure, determination, and focus. You will never make the friends you made in the military than outside the Airforce barnone.
2. The Airforce allows you to travel and get an education.
Now some people will say fuck that, the Airforce don't care about niggaz. Bullshit. There has never been anyone that was not allowed to go to college in the Airforce. In fact they try to push you to do it. Plus you get to travel depending on the job you choose, (which is KEY!) to other countries were you will meet some of the nicest and beautiful (Black) women and experience some of the best food, and culture ever. The problem is no one really tells African American what they should do when they join the Airforce.
So if you are in a situation where you do not have any money, can not afford college, yet are ambitious and want to make something of yourself. This is what you do:
1. Join the Airforce. Not the Army, not the Marines, not the Navy. The Navy should only be used if you can not get into the Airforce.
2. Choose the right career path when you go in. This would be satellite communications, mission control, cargo plan electronics. Something that deals with electronics that enables you to travel. This is beacuse this type of training is invaluable in the current market. Stay away from weapons, military police(unless you want to be a cop), and paper pushing jobs. Believe me, you will thank me later.
3. Become an officer Why? Because the Airforce needs more African American officers, there are programs that help Africans become officers, and officers make bank when they get out because of experience. Retire as an officer and you will pull a pretty good retirement benefits package. However you will encounter some racism in the officer rankings, but still nowhere near the systematic racism outside the military. In fact in the military you can gain access to kick back jobs that earn a decent salary that primarily hire ex-military.
So let me reiterate: The Airforce helps you gain a foothold on a better life, travel, develop a career path if you choose the right job, and have experiences that you would have otherwise not had. The Airforce really helps you take advantage of your options.
