(09-28) 09:06 PDT OAKLAND -- A 6-year-old girl sleeping in her East Oakland home was wounded early today when gunmen apparently targeting her older brother fired shots into the residence, police said.

Leslie Ramirez was sleeping in her bed when at least two gunmen opened fire at the home on Seminary Avenue near East 16th Street at about 2:15 a.m., police said.

One bullet hit the girl's arm and traveled into her chest, said Officer Jeff Thomason, Oakland police spokesman. She was being treated at Children's Hospital Oakland with wounds that were not life-threatening, police said.

The gunmen fled. Police did not immediately release a description of the attackers but said they believed the shooting was gang-related.

The same home was hit by gunfire about a month ago, but no one was hurt, police said.

Leslie's sister, Karen Ramirez, told reporters that she believed the gunmen who shot into the house this morning were targeting her 18-year-old brother.

She said she heard her mother screaming while holding her younger sister, who was bleeding from her arm.
 
I sympathize and agree with your sentiment, mal but where have you been for the last 20+ years? Shooting as been the standard mode of settling disputes for a long time.

No. I grew up during when crack fueled violence was crazy. It actually seems to be better. The media is different because now we have 24/7 newscycle and instant internet information but it's a lot quieter now than when I was growing up.

It's impossible to put a finger on exactly when but I vividly remember fistfights being the normal and before I left high school, it had changed and that was 92.

I actually have an answer to the question: Black nihilism. Those that do these destructive and self destructive actions see no future at all. They don't care if they live or die so you know they don't care about someone else's future. I saw a mention of a Black President but he's a tv character to them. They need role models up close that they can meet and touch. When we were segregated and had to live with each other, those role models were easier to find now they live on the other side of town.

Chopping down forests and building McMansions and suburbs should stop. The mental prison that blacks in Amerika live in can be torn down only by the people themselves. The physical prison of poisons, toxic waste, etc. has to be opposed BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

How can you agree to go to Iraq and other 3rd world nations and bomb and kill villagers there for the white man but allow him to destroy YOUR HOME and move you off of it? Why was there no resistance against what happened in the Gulf recently? Come on, this is a nation of children, black and white. It is a very immature and unwise culture.

As soon as I saw the thread title I'm thinking of the Seton Hall shooting this past weekend. Each one of us probably got our own stories. the victims were some type of hispanic. no word on the perps. here in the bay thugs of different races do dirt together so it could be blacks, mexicans, whatever. oakland has plenty of latino criminals. probably not whiteboys but they do get into the shit too. Yeah it does seem somewhat better because believe me in the 90's it was straight thug life, murder rates were insane all across the country. You can go look up the statistics and find out. I guess you would think we would of learned by now that when you live by the gun you will die by the gun and these young kats should be learning from things that has happened before.

actually you're right murder rates are down but one factor is they've locked up SO many people that theres just less poor desperate people roaming the streets now. US has highest % of population behind bars BY FAR. 1% of the population.
