Why Do Black People Love Tyler Perry?

A few thing's I've noticed about the Tyler Perry movies are, light skinned men alway's play the good guy role. All the bad guy's seem to be dark complicted. Also fat women never are the headlining character's but when there is a serious issue the main character always turn's to a fat woman for guidance. I believe I have come up with good reason as to why he does this. I'd like to know what you think also.

The man creates a female character and became a success. I have nothing against Tyler Perry. I was even treated to one of his plays several years ago and I enjoyed it. But I'm not obsessed with him the way many women are. His following however seems to be with mostly religious type women.

There's no denying his appeal. Here in Atlanta he usually sells out most of his performances. The same applies to most locations his groups travel to. One thing is he usually surrounds himself with top rated talent. I don't know what it is but the man went from being homeless to multi-millionaire. So there is definately something appealing about his product.

There were no light skinned guys in Why Did I get Married...I don't think there were any light people at all in that movie...

true that. He broke the light vs. Dark trend with both of those movies. Then again, the most eeeeevil mf in WDIGM was the dark brother so.... ;)

I'm just startin' shit, though. Tyler ain't trying to do nothing but good. I can't hate on that cat's hustle. As long as he stays out of that female fat suit, we good.

I think this is just a biased opinion.... because if he had something against dark skinned or fat people, why would he even have them in his plays or movies. I think people like to see a good guy doing good and want to use any and every little nit pick thing to try to get at them. Why?

From what he came from to what he is now shows something and he always has a great cast of A-game people in his movies and shows and he gave a lot of those people their fame and start. I don't see whether he has dark or light, fat or skinny has anything to do with his talent. People love him b/c they like to see people do good....thats it. He's talented, funny, and motivating to people. Why does that have to amount to him having color and body issues?

TP is light skinned, he was the good guy in this movie. Has there ever been a bad guy that wasnt dark in his movies?

To be fair, I can't dismiss that there's a self-hatred among most of us. I'm from P.G. County, MD, and the light/dark war is in full effect. Light's better and blacker isn't. The more country you get, you'll find that that subconscious programming persists, unfortunately. I'm not saying Tyler has it or is even intentionally doing it. I doubt he's even aware of it. But it is Atlanta, and you don't get much more country than that, fam.

Me? I'm just glad to see black faces on the screen doing good things. I love my people - and especially my sistas - of all colors. Seeing that myriad of gorgeous black women color and shape on the screen is like an explosion to my senses which is why I'll always be down to see the new Tyler flicks...

...just stay outta that damned FAT SUIT!

Tyler Perry is light skinned??? Ummm, I think your definition of light is a bit skewed. He's brown. Maybe a lighter shade of brown, but very much brown nonetheless.

That's light to you? It's like if people aren't milk chocolate or darker they're light. I don't think that's the case. And even if the bad guys are all dark, if you havent noticed, most of the working black actors in Hollyweird are brown or darker, so I don't think that's a legitimate argument.

and another thing

i've seen ppl of ALL ages go to a Tyler Perry plays.

I've been to damn near all of them

and...i remember coming home on the bus one day and someone was watching it on their IPOD...and started talkin to their boy about it...and the whole bus damn near jumped in the convo

i'm talkin the loud ghetto chics, the "thugs", old heads, young heads...everybody

i know hustlers who love TP

some ppl are just happy to see black ppl overcoming and being strong.

also, the stories are massively relatable in terms of characters

and if you think about the story lines...they cross color boundaries (even tho it is rumored that some non-black ppl have a hard time appreciating his films)

Unfortunately, a large chunk of his regular audience expects to see that character and it helps market the films. He's kinda stuck.

After his early acting roles in his films (often by necessity), Spike Lee was encouraged to continue to appear in his films, even though he's a terrible actor and clearly uncomfortable on-screen. The studios determined that there was an audience out there that expected to see him. It took him some time to diminish his appearances. Multiply that times 100 for "Medea."

Funny thing.

I went to see Daddy's Little Girls last year and that shit full of white people...

I disagree with the light vs.dark angle

he has a successful formula - woman gets mistreated by her Man ,meets nice guy (usually blue-collar guy) that treats her good - and they live happily ever after

he taps into the female fantasy - of meeting a Knight in shining armor

dude must never sleep ,cuz he is always coming out with a new movie or play

Shemar Moore, Boris Kodjoe and Rick Fox. All leading men in his films all light skinned and play the good guys. Has a light skinned man ever played a villian in a TP film? This may be subconcious, but Ace is right this is real.

he is soooo gay! And Essence had the nerve to have him on their cover as the an eligible bachelor! lmao

as far as his movies and the light v. dark skinned debate, it still exists in our community and it plays itself out in various ways.

I never noticed it in his movies, but that's because I don't pay attention to it like that. Like a brotha said above, I'm just happy to see black folks on the big screen!

Personally I like him because he can tell a story without it being male dominated. He can tell an honest story of how real life accounts go no matter whose at fault. Plus Madea is the BOMB!!!

the tyler perry obssession with black people is interestng. i don't think there is an exact black & white answer. maybe...the religious undertones, the characters, the universal appeal, the humor, the messages. maybe, we just want to support one of our own. i love myself some tyler perry.

maybe tyler perry is well received because he's real with his shit. i mean people can relate in one way or another. and his shit is funny.

i think with tyler perry you're either watching his movies or you're not. watching his plays or you're not. and, well, people seem to be watching wahtever he tosses out.
