SIGNAL HILL, Calif. (AP) — A disgruntled employee firing a pistol seriously wounded three co-workers at a menu printing plant Monday before killing himself as a SWAT team entered the building, authorities said.
The man, about 67, entered Kenyon Press shortly after 9 a.m., walked past a superior and shot three co-workers with a semiautomatic handgun, police Capt. Mary Risinger said.

The business owner told police the man had indicated he was upset about a reduction in work affecting all employees, Risinger said. It was not known how long the gunman had worked there or when the cutback was announced.

"The employees recently had their hours cut back," Risinger said. "So he was upset about that, about not having enough work."

The names of the shooter and victims weren't released. The three people wounded were men in their 50s, said Valarie Carlomagno, secretary to the police chief.

A dozen workers were in the business at the time. A female worker locked herself in a room and called 911 when the shooting started. By the time police arrived some employees, including two of the wounded, had escaped. Officers got the other employees and the remaining wounded man out of the building.

Ray Luna watched the chaos and fleeing workers from a construction business where he works across the street.

"Some of them were running from the back of the building. The other ones were coming out from the front door," said Luna, 34. "And the cops were pulling them out with guns drawn and frisking them down."

One of the wounded had a torso injury and another had an arm injury, said Luna, whose own workplace was evacuated. "It was pretty scary. At any point we were ready to hit the deck," he said.

The SWAT operation was conducted by a team from neighboring Long Beach.

Kenyon Press, which makes custom designed menus, has customer service personnel, copywriters, designers, illustrators, proofreaders, prepress, press and bindery/manufacturing workers. Its clientele includes Las Vegas casinos and hotel chains, according to its website.

Signal Hill, a city of about 11,000, is 20 miles south of Los Angeles, surrounded by the port city of Long Beach.

It's more then just pressure... Had a guy at my job kill himself and his girl not to long ago, he could have shot up other people at the job but he just shot himself. (he was not white)

Pilot crashes into ex-in-law's house


"I've got her, and you're not going to get her." Beth Johnson heard those words from her ex-husband Monday, shortly before he crashed his rented single-engine plane into his former mother-in-law's southern Indiana home, killing himself and the couple's 8-year-old daughter.

The mother-in-law, Vivian Pace, described the cell phone call Tuesday as investigators tried to determine why novice pilot Eric Johnson strapped his daughter into the plane's passenger seat and apparently crashed the plane deliberately into the one-story house.

Pace said she has no doubt that the crash was intentional because Johnson had been harassing his ex-wife for months, including buying a house three doors down from hers.

"That was the only way he could hurt Beth," she said. "That was the only way he could get to her."

In the cell phone call, Pace said, her daughter could hear the child in the background saying, "Mommy, come get me, come get me." It was unclear whether the call was made from the cockpit or before the plane took off.

Police were treating the crash as a suicide and homicide. State Police Sgt. Dave Bursten said investigators had yet to find any notes indicating Johnson's intentions, but the fact that the house was his ex-wife's mother's home raised serious questions.

"All of those things together lead us in the direction that this was done intentionally," Bursten said.

Andrew Todd Fox of the National Transportation Safety Board said investigators were also reviewing whether the plane was functioning properly and hoped to have a preliminary report within a week.

Virgil I. Grissom Municipal Airport has no controller on duty, so there was no tape available of any radio communication, Fox said.

He declined to say if Johnson, 47, said anything over the plane's radio before the plane crashed into Pace's home around 10:45 a.m. Monday in Bedford, nearly 70 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Pace was home but uninjured.

The plane had already crashed but the occupants had not been identified when Beth Johnson filed a missing person report because her daughter had not arrived at school that morning after spending the weekend with her father.

"It is just gut-wrenching to think about what was happening to that child just prior to the crash," Bursten said Monday.

Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to be trying to land when it veered sharply and went out of sight.

Eric Johnson, a property manager for the state Department of Natural Resources, had recently taken the girl to Cancun for a few days of vacation.

Emily "was to spend the weekend with dad, and dad was supposed to bring her to school Monday morning," Bedford Police Maj. Dennis Parsley said.

Johnson obtained his pilot's license in November, the same month the couple divorced after 12 years of marriage.

Court records showed Beth Johnson had obtained a restraining order against her husband on July 14, 2006, but the court did not disclose the reasons.

Pace said Johnson threatened his wife with a gun last summer in an effort to change her mind about the divorce. Bedford police said they never received a complaint about the alleged incident.

Mary Webb, who lived across from the Johnsons for about 12 years, said police cars were parked outside the home for several weeks last summer. Eric Johnson told her they were there to protect his wife and daughter.

"He said, 'I wouldn't hurt her, I wouldn't do that,' and I took his word for it," Webb said. "He didn't seem like that type of person at all."

Webb said Johnson moved out in the fall under police supervision and was "very bitter about the divorce." He wanted custody of Emily but said he would settle for visitation rights, she said.

Police searched Johnson's home, seizing two computers, a briefcase and day planner. There were no notes indicating what his plans had been, Parsley said.

Coroner John Sherrill said results of toxicology tests on Johnson were pending.

A man who identified himself as Eric Johnson's brother declined to comment when reached in Iowa.

Johnson had worked for the state for 20 years and managed more than 18,000 acres of forest, said Mark Farmer, a conservation and public information officer.

"By all accounts, he was a good employee, generally well-liked," Farmer said.

Counselors were available at Parkview Primary School in Bedford, where Emily was a first-grader.

"We're all grieving over this," Principal Sari Wood said. She described Emily as a "dear little girl" who "got a kick out of things and enjoyed life."

"She just was one of those really friendly, really open little kids," Wood said.

Yeah i feel the same way. I know that not all black people gave their kids blunts. My parents didn't do that shit. If you say things like "white people can't handle pressure cause they shoot up offices," then a white person could say that black men can't handle pressure because we have so many single family with women as the household(meaning we leave when we get some responsibility put on us). Relative: Sex offender confessed to killing Jessica Lunsford while in jail


MIAMI (Court TV) - While John Couey awaited trial for the rape and murder of his 9-year-old neighbor, the convicted sex offender allegedly confessed to her murder and blamed it on his sister, a relative testified Monday.

"Did you ever talk about the charges against him?" Assistant State Attorney Richard Ridgway asked Couey's in-law, Gene Secord, who was in the Citrus County Jail with him in March 2005.

"He told me if his sister would have loved him more, he wouldn't have done this," Secord, 38, told the jury in Couey's capital murder trial for the death of Jessica Lunsford.

Secord was one of four adults living with Couey in a single-wide trailer in Crystal Lake, Fla., when Jessica disappeared from her bed the night of Feb. 23, 2005.

When police visited the home the next day in a neighborhood canvas, Secord said Couey abruptly snuck out the back door of the trailer, which was located about 60 yards from the Lunsford home.

Three weeks later, authorities found Jessica's body behind Couey's home after he allegedly told detectives that he buried her there. Her body was stuffed inside two plastic garbage bags and her wrists were bound with speaker wire.

In pretrial hearings, Circuit Judge Richard Howard ruled that Couey's alleged confession was inadmissible because police ignored Couey's request for a lawyer during the interview.

Even without the confession, prosecutors plan to present several other incriminating statements the defendant gave to others, including Secord, after he was charged with Jessica's murder.

Secord, who is married to Couey's niece, said the defendant often spoke about religion while in custody on four counts related to the third-grader's disappearance.

"I asked him, if he believed in God so much, how could he have done [this]?" Secord said. "He told me that it was in the past and you can't live in the past."

Secord, who said he had no reason to suspect that Jessica was in the home, was not charged in her abduction. He testified that he was in jail for failure to pay child support when Couey allegedly made the incriminating statements.

Couey, 48, did not look at Secord during his testimony, and instead focused his attention on a drawing he was making of a tree. His lawyers claim he is mentally retarded and are expected to present evidence in a hearing outside the jury's presence to support the claims. If Howard sides with their arguments, Couey could be spared the death penalty.

Jessica's mother, Angela Bryant, traveled from Ohio to appear in the gallery of the Miami courtroom for the first time since the trial began last week. Jessica was living with her father and grandparents when she was abducted.

The six women and nine men on the jury, which is sequestered for the trial, also learned more about the forensic evidence allegedly placing Jessica in Couey's bedroom.

During testimony, a DNA analyst stood in front of the yellow bloodstained mattress that police seized from Couey's room and pointed out two areas that tested positive for Jessica's blood.

Roshale Gaytmenn of the Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement testified that she also matched Jessica's DNA to a stain on the mattress that was mixed with Couey's semen.

In the prosecution opening statement, Ridgway said Jessica's autopsy revealed vaginal abrasions indicative of rape. A medical examiner is expected to substantiate his claims.

A print analyst testified that he found Jessica's fingerprints on a box in Couey's bedroom closet. On Friday, prosecutors also displayed actual sections of the closet wall and pointed out areas where her prints were found.

Monday's testimony was interrupted several times by objections from Couey's lawyers over the admissibility of the evidence.

In the defense opening statement, lawyer urged the panelists to consider whether evidence might have been contaminated or tainted while being handled.

During the DNA testimony, Gaytmenn acknowledged that she received the garbage bags containing Jessica's body in packaging that was not conducive to proper testing.

i have a question for you that are saying you hate white people... i'm assuming but want to clarify if this extends to white babies as well. like, do you feel anything for that little girl or for those two people that got shot in the post i quoted above?

who said they hate white people? i said fuck white people. hate implies jealousy/envy. who is envious of white people who die early, get diseases and have poor skin? with some hard work we can be equal to them financially. there is nothing to hate about whitey.

Why do ya'll always say you hate white folks? I shine shoes for a living and white folks are nothing but nice to me they tip very well and are always polite.They even give me the leftover chicken,ribs,cornbread,greens and watermelon to take home to my family. I love me some white folks.
