While the first of James Cameron's three upcoming Avatar sequels was originally going to be released at the end of 2016, that planned shifted in January when it was revealed that the schedule was being pushed back a full year. Why did this happen? Well, if you were to ask 20th Century Fox chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos, his response would simply be that, “Jim Cameron has his own pace."

This was the explanation that the executive gave while speaking at the Gabelli & Company’s Movie & Entertainment Conference in New York City earlier today. According to Variety, Gianopulos said that he has confidence that the highly-anticipated sequel will be released during the Christmas season two years from now, and that the first one will be followed by two subsequent films in 2018 and 2019. Proving that he has first had experience with James Cameron's pace, he also let it be known that he had the chance to visit the movie's production offices in New Zealand and was blown away by what he saw. Said Gianopulos,

It’s a room…which is covered floor to ceiling with images, characters, worlds, settings. It’s the most amazing, breathtaking thing you’ve ever seen. His challenge is to put all of that in a movie

In case you've lost track of the time, the first Avatar was released all the way back in 2009 (for comparison, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has released nine movies since then). Considering Hollywood's modern business model is dependent on sequels that can be rapidly put together, Avatar 2 is really an outlier - though it's understandable why 20th Century Fox is willing to wait for James Cameron to put his vision together. Let's not forget that the 2009 winter blockbuster still ranks as the biggest worldwide box office hit of all time, with a total haul of $2.78 billion. If Avatar 2 were to make half that cash it would still be the fifth biggest worldwide box office hit of all time.

James Cameron clearly has a deliberate pace when he's putting together projects (let's not ignore the 12 year gap between Titanic and Avatar), but he does actually have an excuse when it comes to the Avatar sequels - specifically that he plans to film all three of the upcoming movies back-to-back-to-back. Unlike other franchise that have set up these types of productions - like Peter Jackson's Middle-earth movies or the last two Harry Potters - there is no source material to go by, so the script really needs to be in the best place possible to make it all work. Let's also not ignore the filmmaker's passion for using the most advanced technologies for his filmmaking - even if that technology doesn't actually exist yet and he has to help invent it.

Assuming that there are no more delays, Avatar 2 will be released on December 25, 2017, followed by Avatar 3 in December 2018, and Avatar 4 in December 2019.

Man roll that shit into Alien and Predator (with some heavy Terminator cross promo) and get it in theaters this year.

Did it deserve a sequel??? That movie was wack. It looked nice, but whos actually clamoring for another Avatar almost 10 years later???

Fucking "Daces with Wolves" in space.

Was really over-hyped, but the graphics were on point.

man every studio in hollywood need to chip in and pay to make the next 1 for free..this nig open the doors for hollywood to make billions off that 3-d bullshit..that nig is 3-d like jordan is to nike..as soon as he made all that bread every fucking movie started claiming 3d

I'm not gonna front when I saw avatar in imax 3d shit blew my mind....i have been a fan of imax 3d ever since i actively seek out movies filmed in that format and I havent felt any movie has lived up to the way he filmed that movie.

Missed it in theaters so I have no interest in watching it now. James Cameron is the man but he is planning 4 or 5 of these movies. :smh: Wish he cared about Terminator like that.

Hell yeah I'm waiting for Avatar sequels. I'm also waiting for Prometheus 2. BGOL hates both movies, so that means I love them.

28 Months Later is finally being discussed as of a few months ago.

Nothing he can really do with Terminator because the rights have bounced around so much. They came this close a few years ago to reverting back to Cameron but Megan Ellison (Oracle founder Larry Ellison's daughter) whose company is making Terminator Genysis scooped them up.

He would have to be a hired hand at this point to work on it and at this point in his career I'm sure he's like fuck that. Fox pretty much hands him a blank check and let's him do whatever he wants then cuts him in on a huge backend take on every project he does.

movie made a billion dollars...literally...but nikkas on bgol say it was wack....:D
truth it made records, still cowboys and indians in space, any british (french, spanish) colony revolt, visuals were breathtaking beyond that nothing much going on much less new . (jedi mind trick: move along move along)

it was extremely wack. it made that much money because they actually took their time and made a movie specifically designed for the 3d experience. the visuals and the nuances of not overdoing it and making it feel like a real 3d world is why it's acclaimed.

the story itself had been done 10000000000x's

James Cameron's Avatar has been championed as an attempt at original science fiction storytelling in film amongst a sea of remakes and adaptations. But Cameron may have borrowed some of the key aspects of his tale from author Poul Anderson.

Reader Goldfarb pointed us to Call Me Joe, a novella written in 1957 by Golden Age science fiction writer Poul Anderson. Many fans of Anderson suspect that the story was an important influence on Avatar, and some are calling for Anderson to be credited on the film. And it's easy to see why.

Like Avatar, Call Me Joe centers on a paraplegic — Ed Anglesey — who telepathically connects with an artificially created life form in order to explore a harsh planet (in this case, Jupiter). Anglesey, like Avatar's Jake Sully, revels in the freedom and strength of his artificial created body, battles predators on the surface of Jupiter, and gradually goes native as he spends more time connected to his artificial body.

Now, there's nothing wrong with being inspired or influenced by other writers, and Cameron has mentioned a host of influences for Avatar: Dances with Wolves, Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Rice Burroughs. But it's odd, given some remarkable similarities in the plots, that he doesn't appear to have mentioned Anderson as a specific inspiration.

Should the similarities between Avatar and Call Me Joe cause problems for Cameron, it wouldn't be the first time. After The Terminator came out, writer Harlan Ellison sued the production company for plagiarizing two episodes he wrote for The Outer Limits. Even though Cameron took Ellison's ideas in a very different and novel direction, the company settled with Ellison, who is now acknowledged in the film's credits.

Avatar may be, by and large, an original film, much as The Terminator is. But there may be firmer roots beneath his story than Cameron has acknowledged thus far.
