Why are we still caught up in trying to get states to apologize for slavery?

Real talk folks...I live in Florida and was listening to the radio station and heard a story on state senators "asking" the state of Florida to apologize for its role in slavery. I don't understand why or better yet where this impacts the us now.

I know I'm going to catch heat if I am misunderstanding the big picture but I had to ask the board what they thought.

I suspect its part of the reparations movement. Part of their agenda is get to the gov't to apologize (which It hasn't done yet). Part of the reason the gov't hasn't is because of the reparations movement... it means they admit wrong on a federal level... which "could" lead to reparations-as it was with the case of the Japanese. Getting enough states to apologize may eventually lead to the gov't to do so...

I'm not trying to get into a reparations debate..I'm just saying I suspect it to be at the root of the plan...

Kayanation..I understand your question on why not...just did not see the big picture at the time. Maybe it is the reparations act and these state senators are postioning for some type of payday. Interesting to see how they would determine who would get what.

They should apologize even though I know those who would apologize today would be giving nothing more than lip service. After all this time reparations I still don't believe will ever happen, so that too is a dead issue.

Our people were captured and brought to a foreign land and forced into slavery. Then when slavery was abolished having no money or knowledge as to how to return home we were forced to live among our captors. Where we were and are still being victimized and you want to know why we still caught up?

US wants more than apology from Japan on sex slaves

WASHINGTON: Washington on Monday urged Tokyo to take responsibility for its role in sex slavery during World War II, after Japan's premier apologized again for prior comments about the so-called "comfort women."

"We appreciate that the apology was made. It is a step forward," said Tom Casey, deputy State Department spokesman.

"But I think this is a very difficult issue and we certainly would want to see the Japanese continue to address this and to deal with it in a forthright and responsible manner that acknowledges the gravity of the crimes that were committed," he said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has repeatedly said he stands by Japan's landmark 1993 apology to the thousands of former sex slaves but that he felt no need to make a fresh statement, on Monday changed that stance.

Questioned in parliament by a leftist lawmaker on whether he was apologizing himself, Abe said he was.

"I am apologizing now as the prime minister," Abe said, his spokesman Hiroshi Suzuki said.

"This has been stated in the Kono statement," Abe said.

In 1993, a statement by then chief government spokesman Yohei Kono apologised to former comfort women and acknowledged that Japan was involved directly or indirectly in causing their suffering.

Historians say up to 200,000 young women, mostly from Korea but also from China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan, were forced to serve as sex slaves in Japanese army brothels.

Abe earlier this month triggered an uproar when he said there was no evidence Japan directly coerced comfort women. He later elaborated by saying he was talking of coercion in the "strict" sense, such as kidnapping women.

Fiscal irresponsibility isn't racially specific.

As for reparations, money would never settle what was done to Black people in this country. Also it would be impossible to decide who gets how much, but also it would be virtually impossible to determine everyone's genealogical background in deciding how Black you have to be to get reparations. Also it would have to be determined if African immigrants should get reparations, because they would want them as well.

Furthermore, given how difficult it was for the government to apologize and give reparations to the Japanese for putting them in interment camps with many of them still alive, it will be virtually impossible for the government to even conceive of any need to give reparations for slavery given that no one who was a slave is still alive, white resentment on the subject, and the belief that enough has been done to address the issue.

co sign, hell if you really wanna put things into perspective, Blacks have only really been "free" for about forty something years since the Civil Rights act....But white folks just are NEVER gonna get it.
