Why are most Airplanes painted white? Is painting them Black bad luck?

Was watching Malcolm X today and the scene came on when the guy was showing Malcolm how the word black was portrayed negatively in the Dictionary page by page.

If I were President, I wouldn't paint the White House black. But if I were a Super Billionaire, I would definitely paint my 747 private plane "Jet Black" with a picture of Malcolm X on the tail. How come rich black people have never done this? I'm guessing in Aviation it might be bad luck to paint something that floats in the sky black. Any truth to this?

Many commercial planes fly at night so that could be a problem. You want a plane to be as visible as possible, even with radar.

Edit: Why do you think they paint attack helicopters black? In any event, aren't "black" people's skin really brown or dark brown?

Why in the fuck would you paint an airplane in a way that makes it more difficult to see, unless it's a military stealth bomber and/or fighter? :smh:
 
It literally takes thousands of pounds of paint to cover a plane and it adds weight.

White paint contains the least pigments and is lighter which means less fuel cost over time.

White paint also easily shows any flaws or cracks in the aluminum (should they appear).

And finally, white paint is reflective so it helps keep the cabin cool. Anyone who's even been on a plane when they shut the A/C off knows how goddamn hot they get. Now imagine being 30,000ft in the air (closer to the sun) with absolutely NO cover or shade.

White paint contains ALL the pigments... that is why it is white... I thought you were a scientist..
 
They paint them white in order for them to be camouflaged amongst clouds so it's harder for potential terrorists to shoot them down with bazookas.

That's white in relation to the light spectrum. Mix a bunch of paint together and see what color you get. It sure as hell isn't white.

You're confusing light spectrum with ingredients.

White light contains all the color spectrum but white paint does not contain all pigments.

What you see is light. If it is white, it is because the paint reflects all the primary colour equally. Elementary chromatography...If you were an engineer, and had learned how colours are created on screen, you would know this;
