Steven Moffat Confirms He Tried to Cast a Black Doctor on Doctor Who

Just like James Bond, the Doctor in Doctor Who is an iconic figure in British culture who, so far, has only been played by white men. In both cases, fans have started public campaigns for producers to hire a black actor for the role, and now, Who head writer Steven Moffat has confirmed earlier rumorsthat the show tried to cast a black Doctor in the wake of Matt Smith's departure, but were turned down by the guy they had in mind. "For various reasons, it just didn't work out," Moffat told the show's official magazine. (Peter Capaldi got the part instead.) Still, though, he swears the sci-fi series will cast a black man at some point: "I certainly don't think there's ever been a problem with making the Doctor black, which is why it should happen one day."

Though Moffat says that the show's guest cast is "among the most diverse on television," he admits that Who had "no excuse" for not hiring more actors of color in major roles. The series just cast Pearl Mackie as the Doctor's new companion, after what Moffat calls "an absolute decision" to choose a non-white actor: "We need to do better on that. We just have to."Whether or not the show is more diverse in the future is not up to Moffat, though: He's leaving the show next year. It's someone else's problem now!

Lost Doctor Who ‘Power of the Daleks’ Episodes Regenerated as Cartoon

07-patrick-troughton-doctor-who.w529.h529.jpg

Thanks to the BBC's old archiving policy, nearly 100 episodes of the original Doctor Who have been lost to history, including all six parts of 1966's "The Power of the Daleks," the first serial to star Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor. Now, the BBC reports, the entire serial will be restored as a cartoon, based on surviving audio recordings, production stills, and film clips from the episodes, which will go on sale on the 50th anniversary of the serial's premiere. Previous lost episodes have been restored in a similar manner, but this is the first time an entire serial has been reconstituted through animation. And they didn't even need to battle the Cybermen on the mysterious planet Mondas to do it!

I read this the other day.

I was thinking he can still play the 9th...we know that he was traveling before he came to London and met Rose and the Nestene. If the '8th' doctor was the war doctor, we can get a two hour movie with 9th, his grief and how he gets to the point where he's going back to earth, (which places this entirely in space), and you can even conjure up some enemy that will show itself some kind of way in the next series to tie it all together.

I can do this Moffat.

As a Whovian who has tried to collect all of the surviving episodes...I must find these recreations...

It took me a minute but I warmed to it and enjoyed it....

hope they have a marathon so I could watch all of it in its entirety.
Unsure of why they choose that animation style, it was hard to watch for me as well, just kept saying its the doctor so......

^^^
LOL

I don't mind it from what I see on the commercials. I'll watch in its entirety later. Mainly because I've been binging Dirk Gently...and omg this lady is gorgeous, (yall better at the pictures than I am):

Anyone have a link for the xmas special?

that was damn good and fun as helll...

DC Films need to REALLY learn from that!

...

...yall tempting me. I have the Husbands of River Song on DVR from last year to watch this year cause there would be no season this year. Was going to watch the Christmas special before the new season started.

Hmm....

I loved it. Knowing the source material was from the same dude who did Hitchhikers explains the quirkiness. The acting was good, (know I know why Elijah Wood stay in work), and it kept you thinking. There were some things that you could see happening, (like the note on the third machine), and you kinda could figure out the explanation for the hallway almost immediately but the journey was awesome. And the ending...even if it's kinda foreshadowing, if you can keep me interested I'll follow. And DG did that.

The cops though...man I wish that had a better ending. But it was good playing out though.

OAN, chick who was possessed by the dog, really gave me creepy, weirded out, clueless. And chick who play Farrah was on point. Development, and she's freaking gorgeous.

agreed

I could never SEE what the note exactly said though!

And yeah I figured it out the minute he saw himself from the elevator...I think any sci fi fan figured it out right there but it was still fun

It was good...

Of course you could nit pick because it had a more than a few holes

And I was torn on how the sister reacting to the TRUTH about her brother's disease...

I felt like even thought he did LIE he gave up his life to support her nonetheless and she was REAL QUICK to cut him off..

that Black woman is perfect and that is the type of quality casting that Hollywood NEEDS right now.

Cause she was just beautiful and good...not Black. Just a good actress with a full story arc all her own. I hope she gets more work.

But I hope they work on the story-lines a little I think they could be SHORTER in the future

And I didn't like how the cops were handled, but since it has a time travel element hopefully they can bring them back somehow.

And I have no idea why I wanted the African dude and the fate assassin to hook up, but I did. Don;t judge me

You get it!

But I think they had to make the sister have a grudge or something to travel to the next season. I dont know how much of the books is in this season but Adams never finished the 3rd Gently book. I think it was his wife? who compiled notes and the 'third book' is just thoughts.

HOLD ON?!?!?

Ok.
No new DW until the season starts next year. BUT I watched The Husbands of RS and DM just now...and I was right to watch them together. They flow together.

Now

Moffat has fucked us over before, giving us eggs in the specials and thinking that they would carry over to the season and they don't. PLEASE don't let this be the case this time.

BUT

there is Class. It doesn't air on BBCA until Springish of 2017. But it's already aired in GB. And thus on the net. :D It's pretty good.

OK I gotta find the Dirk books ASAP

I have not seen the Husbands of River Song YET because I couldn't find the 2 first episode of the latest season...so I have to binge the ENTIRE last season over the break.

What is DM?????

What is this CLASS you speak of?

DM, the last special, Doctor Mysterio.

you don't have to watch the last season for them to connect. Just do Husband and Doctor Mysterio. It's like a part one and part two sort of thing. I guess Moffat thought since they are a year apart people might might have a time making the connections...

Class is a new spinoff of DW that is for young adults. Very tweenish. But it's not bad...it's not so overly cheesy like a degrassi episode but its not DW. Or Torchwood. Some heavy themes at times...kinda gruesome at times...little bit of sex...but it is suppose to take place in the new Coal Hill Academy. Which got a MAJOR makeover. just think of it as Coal Hill got financed by some conglomerate, got a face lift, it now sits on some kind of rift akin to 11 meeting Amy, and you got two aliens with human identities dropped on Earth courtesy of the doctor. Adventures ensue.

Doctor Mysterio was OK, not as good as last year's Husbands of River Song, but ok.
A lot of "Superman" easter eggs and homage in DM.
I hated Class, though. They took Doctor Who-ish storylines and tried to tell those stories by using a bunch of mostly one dimensional high school characters that nobody gives a fuck about. Plus they made 2 of them gay just for gay-sake.
