Who Sang It Better?

I Say A Little Prayer For You

Dionne Warwick

Aretha Franklin

Paul Brown ft Lina

There are a lot of others. This song has been covered so many times it's incredible.

Pretty much in the order that you have them arranged, but Gloria and Issac could also flip back and forth from two to three. The Jackson 5 all day.

I NEVER even heard of Chuggie Otis before. The Brothers Johnson made this a Classic! A tremendous improvement over the Chuggie version. You can hear distinct periods of time in Popular Music with each version. Free Love/Hippie era, the Disco Era, and the New Jack Swing with a UK twist from the late 80s to early 90s.

That's a hard pick between Stevie and Donnell. I knew the original before the remake, but Jones take on it was very modern but classy. I think it was what was needed when it was released.

As for those two, I like Chante Moore but this song was not for her. And she is probably one of the only other people who could do the high pitch whistle thing. But I want to throw this in the pot too

Wow Minnie Riperton gets no love for doing the original. Tsk tsk.

Naw, Minnie gets all the props for the original.

But my first time hearing this song was the Love Jones soundtrack and I had a soft spot for that whole album.

Well I actually prefer Chante Moore's arrangement over Minnie's but there's a huge time gap between the two versions. With Chante's range being what it is I'm surprised your saying it wasn't a Chante song.

This song is a Standard. There really isn't a better or worse rendition of the song. What it does for me is mark stages of my life from being a toddler to now being a grandfather.
Brenda Holloway's release was the year I was born and there seems to have been done by other artists every decade since.

No one can do it better than the original because it sort of set the standard. Phyllis' voice made her version good and the others are covers of the song, except Prince's sounds more like a tribute than anything else.

I'll go with Marvin here.

Nice thread!!
Being old school, I heard a lot of the older stuff when I was a kid...then all the remakes...so I'm not saying any of it is better or worse, they just come from different times...I can appreciate both...
