Who Killed the Heavyweight Division

Pay per view did it. I remember watching Tyson for free on Saturdays, as he worked his way up through the ranks. Became a fan, and didn't have a problem paying later to see him.

Bigger faster stronger alone doesn't mean shit. :smh:
In boxing they use strategy. tendencies. You can make people use their own strength against them.

Shit you can do that in basketball. Makes people use their own speed and strenth against them. they would find a way to beat that.

So now Jamarion Moon faster and more athletic better then Larry Bird? C'mon son

you can also say that people are bigger and stronger about any sport in comparison to those before them in the same sport. Doesnt mean they better then those before them. If you notice when atheletes evolve in any sport the fundamentals are stressed less.

When your less fundamentally sound and focus more on abilities and IQ so you can compensate for it. You will never see another basketball player play up till they 42. Why? because they didn't learn great fundamentals until late in their career.

You talking about

That isn't true. Name the sport besides the NBA. The NBA stresses less fundamentals because it has become star driven with the refs making sure the stars stay in the game so the fans are happy. It is WWE, fundamentals just aren't needed.

The NFL? They have to put in new rules because the players are too big, fast and powerful and if they played like the 60's and 70's somebody would be killed every year out there. In the 60's fucking nose tackles were 250 and would probably barely make a top D 1 school roster. We joke about it being a pussy league, but this isn't your dad's NFL. These cats are lethal. Jack Lambert was a tough SOB, but he wasn't coming at you at 260 running a fucking 4.4 strong as fucking 2 lamberts.

Besides super quick folks like Roy Jones, boxers that are successful are going to learn fundamentals for the most part OR be so physical gifted with speed and/or power they can get away at their PEAK with TAKING RISKS OTHERS CAN'T(see ali)!!!!

What are you saying, we would have more cats like ALI who kept that left hand low as fuck? Isn't he the GOAT?

This is no damn knock on anybody, these kids are just freaks nowadays. Even the era in the 70's when NFL players were taking D-BOL for breakfast didn't produce the freaks you have now.

The bottom line is the heavyweights in all the fighting sports are not getting the best physical talent to work with. Somewhere out there on a football field is an ALI with 25 more pounds of muscle, faster and more punching power that never, ever learned how to box.

BOXING KILLED BOXING

Greedy promoters and TV execs saw how much loot they could make off of pay per view in the 90's with Mike Tyson. Those greedy dumba$$es decided that they could have a mega fight every 6-8 months and milk it for every dollar.

What the Dumba$$es did not realize is that since they stopped promoting the free boxing - like Saturdays on the Wide World of Sports - every other week on tv, that they lost touch with the average and casual fan. Frank Tate, Bone Crusher Smith, Holyfield, Spinx, Tyson all these cats had a following which allowed you to have a mega pay day on pay per view. You wanted to cheer or jeer these dudes. You really wnated to know could boxer x beat boxer y.

Those dumba$$es in charge alienated a whole generation of fight fans because you started to have megabouts and no one really knew who the boxers realy were. There is no real exposure to the fighters now. No one cares about their "story" so you are not compelled to shell out 60 bucks on dues who you are "told" are the best in he world. I used to love boxing, but greed always messes up a good thing.
:itsawrap:

This statement even brought HNIC out to co-sign the truth.

It is true though. I used to watch ABC Worldwide of Sports every Saturday. I got familiar with Chuck Norris that way.

More importantly I used to watch USA's Tuesday night fights and ESPN's Thursday night fights as an adolescent. This is how I became a fan, of a Junior Jones, a Bruce Seldon, a Riddick Bowe, a Michael Moorer, and a couple of others I probably can't name.

So, when a PPV fight came on, I never thought twice about putting in on a pay per view fight. I had built history, felt like I had journeyed, seen the tough fights, and it made it all worth it. Now...well...that's why we have this thread. Not the same.:smh:

ViewMedia

December issue of ESPN the magazine address this topic.

Was reading this thread, went to the dentist the next day and was like, "Somebody for ESPN the magazine lurks on BGOL!

Beat me To It......
NBA TOO. Imagine LeBron Boxing??? Shittt.....
Boxing is not organized. They don't promote theselves other than setting up big fights, rob fighters of decisions & are just down right shady.

Interesting point, they definitely lost me, wasnt sure why, u do present a plausible explanation

:smh:Don King killed the heavyweight division as well as all of boxing.:smh:

Tell that to the 1.25 mil that watched a non English speaking Filipino beat a bad English speaking Puerto Rican. Or the 1.05 that watched a fighter, almost two years removed from his last fight, demolish a non English speaking Mexican, who no one outside boxing could pick out of a lineup with their gardener and nanny's husband in it.
The heavyweight division is not all of boxing and boxing has found a way to thrive with the "glamour" division floundering.
