'White guilt:' Joe Rogan blames racist UFC fans for keeping Jon Jones down

Utimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones is 20-1, and recently broke the promotion's record for successful 205-pound title defenses. And outside of a close unanimous decision win over Alexander Gustafsson, he's made the entire division look foolish.

He's clearly one of the (or perhaps the) best mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters on the planet.

So why doesn't the UFC 182 headliner enjoy the mass appeal that comes with those types of accolades? UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, using former middleweight and light heavyweight number one contender Chael Sonnen as an example, cites racism among fight fans as the possible culprit:

From his podcast (via MMA Fighting):

"I don't know why Jon is not more loved or popular than he is. I don't understand it. In my opinion, I will never miss a Jon Jones fucking pay-per-view. I've heard people say, 'Oh, he's cocky. He's this and [that].' I wonder what the fuck is going on with that and I'm going to throw this out there, I'm just going to say it: I wonder how much of it is racism. I really do. You know why? Because I think they look at him as this cocky black guy and I think a lot of people have an issue with that. I think that if he was a white guy and he was doing the same thing, a la a Chael Sonnen, I think he would be way more popular. Chael was never the successful athlete that Jon is, but I think Chael was way more successful as a promoter than Jon is. Jon has not been nearly as cocky or outwardly braggadocious as Chael was. I just always found it odd when everybody would get upset at him and say that they didn't like that 'he's cocky.' He's 25 and he's the UFC's light heavyweight champion. He's the youngest ever UFC champion. He destroyed Shogun [Rua] to win the title and I mean destroyed. He threw a flying knee and hit Shogun in the chin five seconds into their fight. I mean, Jon Jones is a motherfucker. He's a motherfucker, but for whatever reason people have had an issue with that. I know I'm going to get a bunch of hate tweets. 'Fuck you and your fucking bullshit. What do you got? White guilt? Calling out racism?' I'm probably going to get an equal amount from 'the Aryan race,' mad at me for defending Jon Jones, 'The cocky negro.' I really think there's something to that. I think people want a guy who is so physically gifted and young and brash and black and rich, they want him to have more humility or fake humility, as it were. I think Jon's trying that a little bit and that's one of the reasons Daniel Cormier was like, 'You are so fake.' Cormier was saying that to him because I think he's trying to counteract how people feel about him."

Here's what a typical UFC weigh in stream looks like the day before fight night:

Blech.

There are definitely racist UFC fans, but are they to blame for Jones' inability to "go get some fans" over the course of his six-plus years inside the Octagon? This could be a simple case of hating a guy who never loses because ... well, he never loses. Either way, I get the feeling "Bones" isn't losing any sleep over it.

Race Gate! Joe Rogan rips MMA media for misquoting his racism theory on Jon Jones in the name of 'click bait'

20130426_jla_aa9_139.0_standard_783.0.jpg

Looks like the MMA media has done it again.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) color commentator Joe Rogan -- already under fire from pro wrestling fans for these incendiary comments -- is now beating back an entirely new legion of Internet trolls after his comments about Jon Jones and racism were twisted and turned for the sake of Internet click bait.

From his official Twitter account:

"I've been misquoted left & right about Jon Jones lack of popularity. I said 'I wonder how much of it is racism' key words. I didn't say Jon Jones isn't more popular because everyone that dislikes him is racist. It's a subject for debate and discussion, that's it. It's just ridiculous that legitimate mainstream outlets have misquoted me in the very title of their articles for 'click bait.'"

These MMA writers ... bunch of hacks, the lot of them.

Anyway, you can see Rogan's original comments right here at MMAmania.com, presented IN CONTEXT -- not out -- with a fair and balanced headline (as usual). All you have to do is CLICK THESE WORDS and that will redirect you to the original post.

Dana White reacts to Joe Rogan's racism comments, says Jon Jones is very popular for UFC business

Joe Rogan recently came out and said that his comments about Jon Jones' lack of popularity and racism somewhat intertwining, were misinterpreted by "click" hungry media members.

The hot-button issue, naturally, was soon brought up in a conversation with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White on a recent edition of "The Download," and the Las Vegas fight boss defended his color commentator's comments, saying that they were indeed misconstrued.

Furthermore, White says questioning Jones' popularity is uncalled for because -- despite the fact that he's had his issues during his championship reign (like this this one and this one) -- he is still very popular as far as UFC business is concerned.

Check it out:

"Who says Jones isn't popular? I mean, as far as our business goes, Jones is very popular. I think Joe is saying, ‘Why isn't he this massive superstar? The guy is so talented, his brothers are two NFL players, etcetera, etcetera.' There's no doubt that Jon has had his share of issues since he's been the champ, but I wouldn't say that Jon Jones isn't popular."

Perhaps the fact that "Bones" doesn't get the same UFC marketing push as Ronda Rousey may have something to do with him not yet reaching "massive superstar" status.

But, we'll table that topic for another day.

White went on to squash any conspiracy theories that Jones' lack of popularity, if there is any, isn't because his skin color; pointing out several prominent African-American athletes -- past and present -- whose popularity is sky high.

He also pointed to himself, admitting that he isn't very liked by many (mainly this guy), while others like him a great deal.

"Mike Tyson is black. Muhammad Ali is black. LeBron James is black. There are a lot of guys out there that are black that people love. There's people out there that don't like them too. But you're a human being, man. Some people are going to like you and some people aren't. I'm white. There's a lot of people that like me and a lot of people that don't."

Poor "Bones."

UFC's Light Heavyweight champion of the world somehow ends up being the center of a controversial conversation when he never even opened his mouth.

if you are black and want to be hated by white people all you have to do is act confident

you want to really piss off that racist cac mindset...

Just get healthy on them, mind, body and spirit..

and Keep yo chin up..

but you really shouldnt need a reason as fickle as that

This is bullshit. The issue isn't whether or not a black athlete can be popular, but whether or not non-white UFC champions specifically have issues with racism in their fan base specifically. He can't use other sports to defend the UFC fan base. Ask him why Chael Sonnen was more popular than Anderson Silva. In fact, ask him to explain Chael Sonnen's popularity at all--especially given the racist shit he's said about Brazil. Why are white underachievers consistently more popular than dominant black champions in the UFC? Dana needs to get off that monkey shit.

i don't think its more cause of his personality than anything else. some people hate him for those race reasons, then he should play them up and really become a villain. Mayweather is hated and look how much money he brings in. fuck being popular among whites. don't need their approval or man crushes anyway. show me the money.

Now if Jones got less bread and less interest, that's another thing altogether. But "popular" in Rogan's sense is well liked.

I hate ufc it's like watching neo nazis in a cage. The fans are racist trash hicks from trailers. I can't fuck with this garbage. Buchanan of storm front gatherings of idiots wanting the Blacks to get killed in the ring.

I don't watch that shit either. I can't get into it.

I thoguht Jon Jones was the face of that sport? Like who's more popular than him in MMA? Not saying he's not right but damn I guess I had a misrepresentation of him. I thought he was like their Lebron.

I WISH I FUCKING KNEW WHERE TO CLICK:hithead: :dunno:  :hmm:

White people see MMA as their sport, nothing they can do about boxing/basketball, they had a good run for a while when black people didn't care for wrestling but now with the emergence of all these elite black athletes in mma, they are sour...of course it's cause JBJ is black.

I think Joe Rogan has an admiration for blacks.

But I think whites don’t want mma to go in the direction Boxing has. Boxing began as a white dominated sport then blacks began dominating ever since.

Fuck Joe Rogan.
I use to be a huge fan and i still fuck with Joey Diaz, but rogain has turned into a right wing, "it's so hard for white males", Hunter, redneck. Dudes entire demeanor and style has changed since he started kicking it with guys like Cameron Haynes and alt right cats like ben shapiro and the one gay former young Turks. Fuck Joe .

Yo..them CACs are dumb racist...ever been to sherdog?

I think Joe is spot on here

...also, fuck Joe rogan

Racism and anti Black spells. I also don't think Jones is trippin to hard, either way. Dude had his own self hate demons, to deal with.

Joe himself though tip toes real close to that alt-right, but I have Black friends angle.
