Which Black Comedian are you surprised didn't become more successful?

Bruce Bruce...

Actually was on a sitcom for a minute too but I think that's when those kind of shows were going downhill in exchange for reality ones. And it was cancelled.

And I think everybody can agree Aries Spears shoulda been done blown up. Dude is madd talented. Went to one of his shows in Long Beach last month and he killed it.

This dude was REALLY funny...

I saw Talent perform live.....

easily dude should have been more known....

Sinbad's career started getting in gear just as there was a backlash to "clean" comics..I remember people hating on Sinbad and loving the most profane ignant comics to step on stage.

and how many comedians really sustain like that? do you know how much bill cosby hit and missed before he got the cosby show?

I challenge you to name 5 black comedians from the 60s, 70s 80s to have long sustained high profile careers for longer than 5 years at a time.

Its funny how Bernie Mac did in Original Kings of Comedy....talk about a funny story about his sisters kid s and get a tv show based upon it.....

exactly what Cosby did ....some 20 years prior....

Himself was one of the classic stand up shows in comedy history.....

talked about his kids and got the Cosby show from it.....

#1 reason these guys never broke up: just talking about ghetto topics.

White people (incl club bookers, talent scouts, producers) don't wanna hear that shit. They can't relate to shit they don't know. Watch Eddie in Delirious and Raw, or anything Pryor did in the 70s and 80s. That shit is universal.

This right here is so true

RIP Rasheed (East New Yawwkk!!!)
also Bruce Bruce (way better host then Ricky Smiley, who I thought was kinda lame)

Yo anybody remember that one comedian usedta always come on ComicView, he had dreds and crooked ass teeth and was always drunk. He'd always end his jokes w/"And the moral of this story is...." He usedta have me in stitches

Lets start with Dick Gregory, Bill Cosby, Flip Wilson, Wildman Steve, Slappy White, Lawanda Page, Rudy Ray Moore, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and Eddie Murphy.

There were others like Moms Mabley, Pigmeat Markham Skillet Leroy but they were actually holdovers from the Vaudeville era.

Man Sinbad aint never been funny. :smh::smh:

But i agree with Corey Holcombe. He a little too real though. He had that Patrice Oneal syndrome. Chubby dude that called black women out on their bullshit. Kevin Hart is self deprecating and casts himself as the butt of the jokes so they love his ass.

That maybe your opinion but it don't mean squat. When a man is selling out everywhere he goes while on tour and sells out his HBO specials and those yearly island getaway parties, that speaks for itself.

:lol:I still remember the first i saw him on ComicView when he did the OJ Simpson routine, i laughed so hard tears were coming out my eyes

:lol::lol::lol:

"oh, hey OJ.. what you doing over there in dem Bushes.. let me cook you some breakfast"

It's crazy how I(and I'm sure many of you) can remember almost all of those classic Comic View routines. So many up and coming, and established comedians every night. Those were the days.

I think most of these cats have been successful if we look at it from the standpoint of working consistently, but yeah, a lot never "blew up" like they should have. As another poster said, you've got to be able to crossover and appeal to more mainstream crowd. Some can do it, and perhaps choose not to, and other just don't have the skill set to do it.

The stand up game is a haaaaaaard life though :smh:

Beat me to it. Hilarious hilarious dude. I couldnt even think of his name but he was the first one that popped into my head.

^this

I STILL dont understand this Kevin Hart shit.:smh:

:smh:Been saying this since day one. I don't get it. Marketing I guess? Ioeno.

David Alan Grier is one of the most underutilized but funniest dudes in comedy. And his movie and tv career just dropped like a rock after his Living Color run.

Yeah I forgot all about Aries Spears.

I know a lot of these dudes can easily get regular work grinding out in the clubs but that's not the big blowup for comedians.

A lot of good comedians that did not make it beyond showcases or even get to make an hour special. But honestly a lot just don't have crossover appeal

He properly would have blown up if he didn't fucked Eddie and Johnny Gill's wives.

Man... back in the day, I really... no, REALLY thought this dude was hilarious and was gonna blow up:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZOCfh0bujA4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The chris tucker acting nigga in the movie Ride...he was some sort of assassin with the lady of rage...that nigga was always hilarious to me..where is he at these days?

you talkin' about my homie Dartanyan Edmonds...

he was in a couple of movies... I went to high school with his brother (well, I was a student and his brother was a teacher)....

i think joe torry was the funniest cat to grace that stage.

thought he woulda really blown up.

most surprising was dave chapelle.

Earthquake is the funniest comedian I've personally ever seen (live, that is).....

dude literally had my stomach hurting from laughing. I mean i couldn't eat, drink, nothing because i was laughing too fucking hard.

Bruce Bruce is good live too, just don't sit too close to the stage cuz he might start capping on you with the QUICKNESS.

I didn't either at first but understand now. He's relevant to the current generation in ways the older comics aren't. He's good though, nigga had me on the floor crying and I'm pretty harsh on comedians that don't have the artform down.

I saw Godfrey at the Improv in DC a few weeks ago. I'm surprised he hasn't blown up more. Dude has been in comedy for at least a decade. For some reason he has less hair every time I see his act.

I agree been seeing him from the 90's dudes been funny. Maybe he rub somebody the wrong way, or maybe just hard do deal with? There's a reason why his career DIDNT go as far as it should.

that was my dude, its just commmmmedyyyyyyyyyyy
