I have absolutely NO idea about the specifics of my West African ancestry. Don't particulary care either, being as their greed and treachery brought my ancestors to what is now the greatest country on earth. And most descendants of those responsible (see article) aren't apologetic about it, either.

If I needed to know my history I could do a DNA test. And go on a slave tour in Ghana. And many other things. But, my self esteem is just fine. Even in the Americas ,the occurance of tropics diseases like malaria and yellow fever were Used against them. Toussaint used it to kill the French and English.

This is also why sickle cell occurs in Black people in much higher rates than white people. Sickle cell is defense against malaria.
In the African interior , white men wouldn't make.it very far until the discovery of quinine, which helped against it. That wasn't until 18th century. Same as in tropical India. The soldiers would drink alcohol with it, because it was so bitter.

A much milder dose of quinine in water became known as a health tonic back in Europe , along with the alcohol used to make it tolerable, and this is why Gin and tonics/ vodka tonics are popular today.

That's jjust a few anecdotes that correlate with the timing of access to the interior. Until then, they relied on coastal traders who has access for slaves.
