Remembering the TV series H. R. PUFNSTUF (Sep 6 – Dec 27, 1969)
Starring Jack Wilde, who had shot to fame as The Artful Dodger in Lionel Bart's Oscar winning film Oliver, H.R. Pufnstuf was a children's television series produced by Sid and Marty Krofft. It was the first Krofft live-action, life-size puppet program.
Produced for seventeen episodes for the 1969-1971 season for Saturday mornings on CBS; because the show was so popular, reruns of the seventeen episodes continued to be broadcasted for the new seasons until 1973. Unlike the Kroffts' other shows, this show was shot on 35mm film, rather than video tape, which was standard for most television shows in the 70s.
In 2004 and 2007, H.R. Pufnstuf was ranked #22 and #27 on TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever.
The Kroffts didn't stop with the TV show, they also had a theme park in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) called the World of Sid & Marty Krofft. It looked a strange and fun place to visit, but only lasted about a year before it took its last curtain call.
Also not content with taking over the world with their burgers, McDonalds decided to "borrow" the H.R.Pufnstuf ideas and looks. They even had the same people who made the costumes for Pufnstuf make theirs, but they renamed the characters (Mayor McCheese, Grimace, Hamburglar etc.). So where others fear to tread, the Krofft brothers took on the mighty McDonalds and won!
