Over the past few years, I'm started to get really into independent movies. I can't wait until this one comes out:

My other favorite was this one... personally, I think I never saw Jim Carrey give so much depth to a character before:

SOL, what are your favorite independent films?

I occasionally dabble in the waters of independent cinema and recently have to admit enjoying both "Brick" and the incredible "The Squid and the Whale." As well as these two I would say "Half Nelson" is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.

Me and the boyfriend are DEFINITELY checking out NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN this weekend...I have heard too many good things about it, to let myself pass it up!

Oh, and would this film be considered an independent? It stars some big names, but I don't remember it ever coming out in theaters:

alot of those films really aren't indy flicks..true indy flims have no bankable or notable stars...low budgets and are outside of the studio system...

miramax, lionsgate, fineline, touchstone, castlerock etc those are studios made to LOOK like indy films but are actually under Disney, Dreamworks, Warner Bros. 20th Century Fox...

After they saw the success of REAL indy films.. Blair Witch Project, Clerks, Reservoir Dogs, El Mariachi etc..they decided that they would open boutique production companies that catered to the indy crowd...

Canada has a few hard to find but goood independant movies. Both "Trailer Park Boys" and "Phil the Alien" were hilarious. FUBAR is another good one if you can find it (a documentary on rural Ontario Headbangers)

Peeps forget that plenty of horror classics (Night of the Living Dead/Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Evil Dead/Halloween/Dawn of the Dead) were Independent as hell, but they're now too mainstream to be considered Indies, so with those out of the way, some other favorites:

Manhattan's gritty, majestic Lower East Side is the sweltering romantic playground for Victor Vargas (VICTOR RASUK), a self-styled teenaged Casanova who, despite his adolescent hubris, has a lot to learn about love.

Paradise Now
A gripping story about two Palestinian suicide bombers in the 24 hours leading up to their mission. Lifelong friends, Said and Khaled lead a normal life, working together in a garage and never discussing politics or religion. Having sometime ago volunteered to become suicide bombers they learn they have been chosen for the next mission and that it will begin in only 24 hours.

The Fountain takes place in three interweaving narratives that encompass the age of the Spanish conquistadors, the near-future period and a journey through deep space in an ecospheric starship. <better watch this high or drunk, very trippy>

Thebridge-poster.jpg

The Bridge
People suffer largely unnoticed while the rest of the world goes about its business. This is a documentary exploration of the mythic beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge, the most popular suicide destination in the world, and those drawn by its call. Steel and his crew filmed the bridge during daylight hours from two separate locations for all of 2004, recording most of the two dozen deaths in that year (and preventing several others). They also taped interviews with friends, families and witnesses, who recount in sorrowful detail stories of struggles with depression, substance abuse and mental illness. Raises questions about suicide, mental illness and civic responsibility as well as the filmmaker's relationship to his fraught and complicated material< very deeply disturbing, hugged my girl after watch it>

If I remember correctly, Monster with Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci was an independent film. Incredible acting, she really deserved that Oscar.

Monster was great.

I don't know if it counts but I love The Fountain.
Beautiful score, cinematography, and symbolism all around.
