What the hell is the Middle East? How can you be in the middle of the east! What is north east south

I believe (guess?) that the geographic term "Middle East" distinguishes that region from both the "Far East" (China, Japan, etc.) and the "Near East" (Mediterranean-Coastal Northern African countries, and maybe even Mediterranean-Coastal European Countries). I don't think that even experts absolutely agree, but roughly it's what's between Near & Far East. dunno
