What is YOUR definition of a genius? (cause I don not think Kanye is one)

Not defending Kanye or arguing in favor of his self-given genius label, but I don’t think bad albums disqualify him. Prince is my all time favorite artist and an absolute genius and he has quite a few sucky albums. Geniuses often make music that isn’t understood or appreciated for years or even decades after it’s released.

Having said that, I think the biggest argument against him being a genius is the fact that he obsessively refers to himself as such. I can’t find evidence of anyone else who I would consider a musical genius doing so. That’s just not how they roll.

Its difficult to pin down a proper definition of genius especially outside academia and psychology


How would YOU define artistic genius?

Like musical acting writing comedic.

You got examples

Defining sports genius is even HARDER.

Is Quentin Tarentino a genius? He rehashes other people's shit sometimes, but he always puts his own mark on it(something a good sampler does), and he has made some really good shit, visually and dialogue-wise. He brought careers back from the dead, made Oscar winning and nominated flicks, etc. He also can be an asshole from what I understand.

It's not average and cant really be taught?

His writing, his voice the palette he works in is distinctive

To me there is Kurosawa, Spielberg, Kubrick, Hitchcock.

Spike to me is in that category.
