Excluding monetary donations, because they really don't do shit, and anything that you gain profit from, what have you done lately to better your community?

Me:
Teach elderly/less fortunate basic computer skills including maintenance and basic web skills (email, browser, etc.) every other Saturday w/Goodwill.

Survey communities and teach disaster preparedness (so niggas don't end up like Katrina victims) twice/month with the Red Cross.

There are more projects to get involved with but this is what I do now. I did not start this thread to brag, I started it to gauge the amount of service people on this board actually commit too and maybe spread ideas among the members. Add yours.

Keeping mine from becoming common predators that fuck up the neighborhood. I keep them focused on their future beginning with straight A's in school, respecting adults and the law.

By leading by example...... Why do you feel you have to volunteer to make a difference..... Nothing wrong with volunteering but your life should be a prime example already

What type of mower do you have? I had a poulan riding mower but I ditched it last winter and just bought a nice electric start Toro.

Sorry I was going off topic
I gave my neighbor a roll of trashbags the other day when he came over to borrow some.

Nothing great;
But I'm invited to lecture to middle and high school aged students regarding technology and photography. Many frats and soros give educational siminars in my community and I try to avail myself for things like this....

For real, I coach 13 and 14 years olds basketball for a couple of hours a week and they will have you pulling your hair out. My hat goes off to anybody that can take that abuse for an entire school year !

i run a non profit organization that feeds, clothes, houses, and finds employment for poor/homeless mostly BLACK people.

it is also integrated with a baptist church that my brother pastors.

this is why i don't bother to get into debates with people about religion, while they're talking shit i'm busting my ass to help my people.

I feel you.

I volunteer at the community center, I have a few programs.

"Young leaders" and "Young DJ's" during school months and "Young Videographers" and "Young Music Producers" in the summer.

Lots of fun and I tell everyone that if you have a skill in something? take it to your community center and share it for a hour a week!

That is pretty cool man...I would like to see some more videos/movies told from our perspective...show these young ones how to do it...

How do you get funding to provide these services (aside from probable church donations)...is this a part-time effort or do you do it full-time...I want to start a non-profit organization but at the same time realistically speaking I need to eat too...I'm not being greedy...that's just life...

Peer Facilitate young black men at a Non Profit Organization(daily).

Run 2 After School program at 95% black accelerated charter school.

Coach boys at Church youth league 11-14 3 days a week.

Rasie my son to be a young leader and care about others and his community.

I know about grants...when you say requesting funds are you referring to traditional fundraisers? I guess I should seriously do my own research as well ask questions...also with writing a grant...there's no doubt that I can handle it but I am worried I will be overlooked because I don't have a PhD or MA and may not be taken seriously...

Gave a crack head a dollar for a sammich, so he says.
Shop at black owned establisments.
Told my daughter to have fun and do her best, when dropping her off at schooll.
Held the door for a black woman and even a white man.
Remain a Black Man, at my all white job, many of whom believe that a Black Man cannot do the job I do, and I do it better than them. ( this really pisses white people off.)
fix neighborhood kids bikes.
Make more than 30,000 a year and Still! live in the hood.

Let's see, I used to be a substitute teacher

I used to tutor kids

I help people prepare for the LSAT and NY bar

I used to be a referee and judge for NY Golden Gloves, if you've watched on TV you've probably seen me.

When I was real estate developer I hired many many people full-time so I was feeding their families.

Now I'm VP of my townhome association board. I essentially run shit. That's why we're getting a jacuzzi, fire pit, dog run, and marina or at least a dock. I know how to spend money to help all of us make money and live comfortably while we're in the community. We've started poker nights... Remember YOU make YOUR community.

I sue corporations on behalf of their shareholders either for fraud, derivatively or even ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) claims.

I teach people how to make money and more importantly how to invest.

By being me I've helped the community.

this stuff is full time, man.

i never posted this process because i will not contribute to unscrupulous motherfuckers scamming this system. there are already enough bastards doing this.

without posting the specifics...

your non-profit organization must first be registered with your state, this is just like forming any other business and can be done at legalzoom.com. this part will take about 2 to 4 weeks.

secondly, you have to download the 501c3 forms from the IRS, fill that shit out (about 200 pages) and provide any picture proof of the existence of your business. the IRS will make you jump through more hoops, the process will take about a year if you're lucky, but once they approve it, it will be retroactive to the date of the formation of your business.

after that, you can go online to find grants, have a local grant writer fill out the forms, it takes about 2 weeks to find out if the granter accepts your proposal and then will send you more forms to fill out in detail as to what your needs and plans are.

3 to 4 months later and you can have between 5 and 50,000 dollars to go towards your programs. that's just private donors...the gubment will lace you with millions depending on what you're trying to do.

Thanks to you and Makk for the headstart...my last question if it's not personal is what city are you in...my reason for asking is my thoughts are depending on the purpose I would guess NP organizations would fare better in a big city like say Atlanta, Georgia as opposed to a smaller city like Norfolk, VA...

^^^^ BDB dont leave out them having a justifiabe Board, previous supporters, current supporters, a legitimate forecast of future earnings, a fiscal agent to handle your money, a never ending paper trail incase you get audited, Etc.....

Norfolk could be a GOld mind depending on the issues at hand, and how many oprganizations in your area already have programs and Government funding. Im in Indianapolis we have low graduation, high incarceration, and std's are rampid so there is a need every where homes.... Just beware sometimes they want you to link up with other NPO's to make money for themselves and watch over your new business.

...and how can you show picture proof of your business if you don't yet have the financial resources to even have a place of business...

In my heart I feel so but my mind says otherwise because of the lack of people/money here...that's why some of the communities are the way they are...I would consider Indy a big city...especially since y'all have at least one professional sports team...

apart from the board, these details are specific to the kinds of grants you go after.

we never had to show previous supporters because the church did charity work on the strength of donations. the preexistence of these programs was proof enough for the grants we went after.

the IRS made us add people to our board, adjust our by-laws, provide proof of our address (pictures) etc., but those kinds of things are simply part of the overall process, he'll figure that shit out.

Leroy, you can rent a one man office to start out in. your board can be made up of friends and family. this shit is complicated, but IT IS NOT HARD, nor do you need a degree in anything to make it jump off.

btw, we are in both Atlanta and Memphis.

the good ol' gubment provided MILLIONS for our welfare to work program that we ran in the late 90's early 2000's.

we graduated 40 women per year and found jobs for them, many of them had no clue as to work protocol, dress, etc.

Go to the Ymca and start running your program there as volunteer and build a repour with them. Thats a good start to seeing how much effort it takes before you actually get into the funding part of it. The more issues that your area has the more money there is available if you have a good plan to help the Government look better.

Thanks a lot again Buk...when I was learning how to set up corps. I had to find books related to the topic and there was always lots of books on non-profit orgs....I just need to dust off my brains and do my homework...thank you...

I was thinking either the Y or even hooking up with a local school especially if it's a school I work at...they would not object at all to letting me conduct programs there...

- Volunteered at the largest mental health hospital in the community
- Worked with the individuals on the downtown Eastside (poorest area code in the whole country)
- Work for 3 organizations in mental health; a total of 7 facilities
- Done care provider work for my grandparents
- Fundraising for the Salvation Army
- And I donate clothing to The Developmental Disabilities Association and other foundations (that they can use to sell to places like Value Village for their own profit)
