What Happened To The Small Pickups???

I remember there used to be small pickups every where. In the late 80s in LA, they used to fix them up (especially the Nissans). They'd slap some rims and low profile tires on them, and they were good to go.

Not only that, but people used to use them as work trucks. I'm a Real Estate Broker, but I also have a C-54 Contractor's License that allows me to install Ceramic Tile and Natural Stone. A small truck would be perfect for the business; but if you want something new, you have to buy a large truck.

Well, here's why you don't see the small pickups anymore:

Yep, I see people importing those small Japanese utility trucks, plus next year Toytota is releasing a 10,000 very modifiable bare truck which will only be sold in Mexico but I'm sure will be here soon

Yep, more and more people are buying "Kei Trucks" imported from Japan.

Once they're 25 years old, they can be sold here. So people are buying them and using them in the trade industries. I'm thinking about it for hauling tile and saws etc...

The people are annoying in the vid, but this is what people are getting.

You could look at the mini cargo vans like Ford Connect or Nissan NV200.

I watched the vid in the OP and maybe some of it also was because of the introduction of the crossover vehicles and minivans.

Some of these smaller pickups I've seen lately cost more than the larger pickups which I thought was crazy pricewise.

That was my first vehicle. I wrecked it within 6 months

Damn.

Similar story for my brother. He took over the vehicle from pops a few years later. Got stuck in some stormy weather on the Coquihalla in the early-2000s and side-swiped by an 18-wheeler. Fortunately no one was hurt except the Mazda.

i used to have a neighbor back in the 80s that had one of these Nissan trucks.......it was exactly like this one except his had a monster hood on it....

Yep, that was the look... Nardi steering wheels, lowered, and Daytons wheels. The ballers had Alpines cassettes, and Cerwin Vegas 12" or 15" subs bumping.

I wish my story was that dramatic. Instead, I exited a strip mall parking lot and made a left turn without looking both ways. I hit a minivan in the sweet spot between the driver and the sliding rear door.

If the driver sped up I would have killed his children. If he slowed down I would killed their dad. All of those people are, hopefully, still alive today due to dumb luck.

I wish I had been drunk so I could blame the accident on being stupid and selfish. People wise up and get sober every day. But how do you gain more attention? Even if I could when has hypervigilism ever solved anything?

The worst part was that I had visited a skateboard shop owned by a friend of a friend. I've never owned a skateboard and to this day I couldn't name the owner if you sicked a rabid doberman on me and pulled back its chain at the last minute.

This entire family almost died over a meaningless interaction. In the 20 years since I'm sure they suffered from PTSD that would have made sudden death seem like a blessing

I should be rotting in a cell right now, instead I'm posting on bgol. Life is a bitch for other people.

Profit margin is too small...better to convince Americans they need behemoth trucks that they drive in by themselves, and rarely utilize 10% of those truck's capabilities

Glad to hear everyone was alright.

I know what you mean ... the What Ifs could have been terrible.

I have been in 1 accident back in high school. Borrowed mom’s minivan and took it out at lunch hour. I made a right turn around a building in a parking lot which created a blind corner of sorts. I went a bit too wide and overcorrected too fast and clipped another car head on. Minimal damage to our front left bumpers and headlights. Sounded worse than it was. I got out and immediately apologized for fucking up.

The woman was cool as hell. I felt terrible though. Almost seriously injured someone’s mom / grandma had we been going fast. All because I was a new driver who couldn’t negotiate a parking lot turn near a bowling alley.

Fuckers costs to dam much. A new Ford Ranger is 30+ thousand dollars. Them joints used to be cheap enough to buy for high schoolers.
