posted this in the main forum but I think I'll get better responses here...

most of them over there were interested in laughing about it than giving answers. :hmm:

I rarely ever see any at my local gym - its not golds or the y but its part of a local undergrad college and lots of girls are there (mostly in the cardio area)... so I thought I would get a chance to meet/see some college black chicks... I know theres plenty of black chicks at the college cus i see their sororities & black girls wearing greek letters around the area.

I have seen only like half a dozen of them at the gym and they were part of the track team or some college team.

But other than that - very few. Am I at the wrong gym?

Help me out... I'm tired of meeting/seeing out of shape girls.

I'll be honest.

I'm a little self conscious so unless I got a workout buddy you might not find me at the gym; I'm pretty sure I'm not the only woman who feels this way.

I'd rather put on some sweats and go walk the nature trail in the park or put in a taped video of Body Electric in the house. Once I find some steady income, (damn you economy), I would like to pursue a lifelong dream of dance or gymnastic classes.

I say this because there are many ways one can 'work out' but it all depends on the taste of the woman. Then again there might be those who don't care, and think their youthful looks will last forever. You could be looking in the right place but what you're looking for might not be.

I go to 24 hour fitness. There are quite a few black women that work out at my gym. Try it. But also beware: I hate when I'm working out and guys try to talk to me. I'm not there to hook up, I'm there to work out. If she has on her headphones, she doesn't want to talk. I have given a few the stank eye. Just be respectful when you're approaching someone.

I have had that happen to me,it pisses me off also that they would rather stare ten continue their workout:smh:

WOmen work out at gyms that have treadmills and bikes. Usually, they also have weights and maybe a pool if it's fancy. :smh:

Yea. . that's happened to me too. . On the ellipitical a guy is staring from behind

As for me. . . I workout at 5:30 am in class that's outdoors so I really never see anyone except those in my training class :dunno:

I do work out at my school's gym occassionally. It seems a lot more people come after dinner . .. so maybe you wanna try hitting the gym during the busier hours. You can probably even ask someone who works there what the peak times are.

I agree with all the women above. I used to do a few classes at my gym, and there was this one P-Diddy looking cat who I used to HATE seeing in class, cause he would always try and flirt and hold these convos after class...like, DUDE, we're here to work out, not flirt! I just don't think women like being approached that way at the gym.

I used to work out at a gym not too far from my place, but hate that they don't have a pool, so I'm scouting for a new gym with pool, so I might join the Y. But, I know plenty of black women working out at the local Y and 24 hour fitness.

Then work the fuck out at home! :hmm:

Very true... I am in college and love to go to the gym but only if I have a work out buddy so I dont feel alone or like everyone is staring at me lol

1st of all - how did this turn into a 'i hate it when men stare at me in in the gym thread'???

2nd - all you who complain about being stared at and being shy, your not the only ones... white girls get looked at just as bad and I've seen some really overweight white chicks busting their asses off in the cardio area of the gym and I know they feel conscious as well.

3rd - PrincessC, this is bullshit that there are no 24 hour fitness clubs in all of Pennsylvania! :smh:

I go to an all woman gym here in Toronto ... that way I can work out in peace and not have to feel all self-conscious about some man sizing me up and judging me while I'm trying to work out:rolleyes:

i'm a member of a gym here in chicago but unfortunately i'm one of the few black women that go there. I definitely don't see any other black girls who are my age range there (20-25) which is really a shame. I have to go to the gym every single day though. I haven't really been approached by the black men I see there, mainly everyone is just there to work out and then go about their business.

I am shopping for a new gym. The most women I have seen are at Curves and Planet fitness. There were a lot more in the school gym when I was still in school. But anyway, men probably won't join these gyms because they don't have heavy weights. Even I don't want to join these girly gyms. I like Gold's and 24 hour fitness so far. I see a lot of women when I work out outdoors though. Way more than black men.

Also, I am someone who believes that it is not cool to hit on a woman at a gym if that is what you have in mind...

When I do go to the gym, I go to the one at my school. I paid $5 bucks and I have access to like 5 different gyms...I love it. The gym can be a lil annoying which is why I go at either 6am or 7am...mofos steal machines and you go to physically reserve them and all that nonsense.

I definitely hit up the track and just walk around campus tho.

I used to go to Curves a long time ago. I liked it but hated their hours. .. the one I was a member of closed like weird times throughout the day. . :smh:

I hate gyms that have weird hours!!!

The one I used to be a part of closed at 10 p.m., and I used to only be able to hit it up, like, the last hour or two before closing time...

There are some 24 hour ones, but they're way across town (a good 30 minutes from me on a good traffic day), and it's near a university, so MADD young people working out there, flirting, etc. It seems like women like working out IN PEACE (lol).

I can also say, in reference to what the OP said in a later post, that I do feel insecure about my body and don't care for the attention (good or bad) when I'm working out...it makes me feel really weird and self-conscious to see someone checking me out, ESPECIALLY at the gym! I'm not wearing any makeup, my sports bra is on, so my titties are looking hella crazy, and my hair is pulled back...BASICALLY, I'm not at my best
