What do you consider a decent salary for a grown man @ 36?

Peace fam. I know a lot of factors matter but here is the run down. I'm 36 living in Philly. I just got promoted to an awesome entry level position in Peoplesoft applications, but its only paying 45k.

I like to say 20 bucks an hour is the new minimum wage for adults. I cant seem to get much more than that. I feel so far behind my white counterparts too.

Own my own crib, got a 96 maxima in great condition. 2k in savings and 4500 in 401k.

Whats should a grown man really be making in your opinion?

again (and again and again) it really depends on where you live.

in some places you can live comfortably off of 25k a year. in other places 100k may not be enough.

I would agree with what he said. At 36 years old I would think a decent income would be between $50 - 75, 000. Anything more than that and your doing quite well.
 
No matter how much people make they allways want more. lol @ "only 45k". Everybody's different and their definition of "success" is gonna be different. Seems like you tryin to get wealthy from a job and that's not likely. Need to invest. Live at 30k a year and save 15 and invest it.
 
it all depends on your goals and what you want outta life. If you desire wealth then you will need more. If you are happy with what you got then no need to be chasing the dollar. Me as long as my car is starting up and has good acceleration, I can surf the web, eat out everyonce in a while, buy books and take trips to visit friends I'm happy with my income. Now once you decide to have a family you gotta think for them too and you might need more. You got retirement going, a little savings, just build off there and try to keep outta debt and follow the Jones and you will be just fine.:yes::yes::yes::yes:
 
How does one get promoted to an entry level position. :hmm: Anyways 45g is good anywhere except New York and San Fran area. It depends on your education and past experience. At 45 g you make only 3 thousand less than the average American household.

Funny shit is I make the least in my crew but I'm the only one that enjoys going to work every day. Because I hustle and have developed a new approach to what a job really is I got promoted 1 month after probation. I want to make more but I know loving what u do is the first step
 
45 at entry-level is decent. It seems like you live relatively frugally too. I mean you are at entry level. You're saving, you're putting money into retirement, you got a place to lay your head, you ain't living with your mom or in a basement (right?). You won't be driving an Escalade, but you should be able to cover basic "wants" easily.

It's a good start. Now if you said, you make 45 after five years, we got problems.

At 36, you shouldn't be worried about what other people make. I'm 33 and I stopped worrying about that at ~26-27.
 
Honestly man, you can't worry about what white people have in philly. The few areas they dominate, they keep on lock. Even if I had 400-500k I wouldn't try to move next to them that money is better spent elsewhere. Given all that you've said, if you're not duckin shots it sounds like you're doing pretty well.

I did help desk answering phones. The new position is learning Peoplesoft which will allow me to specialize/concentrate on one particular skill. I want to be a consultant one day

Cosign lol. I also bought less house than I could really afford back then. My mortgage is only 850. Most credit cards and student loans are almost paid off. I dont club. Once in awhile a resturant or bowling. Nothing crazy
 
Go to salary.com. Put yr zip code in and the job title that you do. It will give you your average in your area. If you make less than your average. Its time to move on or request a raise.
 
As a single man, your income is more than sufficient for the city you're in (could be higher but it doesn't take 130k to live well)....now your savings (only 2K?? :smh:) is another issue -- at 36, depending on your life choices, cats should have at least a 8 months salary liquid and/or receiving decent returns via other financial instruments. Like a poster mentioned above, it's not how much you make, it's how much you keep.

You doing better then me but you got a couple of years on me. Of course on bgol cats will claim 45K is pocket money.
 
In Cleveland I make just over $36K Mid-West money. Not bad. I'm 31, married to a soon-to-be-Registered Nurse (no kids, still renting for now), so we will be cool. I'd be making over $41K if I had stayed in the reserves, but peace of mind is worth more than money. When I was in the reserves it seemed everytime I try to get peace of mind some power-trippin' asshole tried to get a piece of mine...so I had to leave before they took a piece of my check for doing something I shouldn't have done.
 
making 100k is not an easy feat without being self employed or going to graduate school (limited to law, medical, pharmacy, not a doctorate in agriculture)

Dawg honestly that shit baffles me. I'd wish they post what their doing to sneeze at 45k. I didnt even list my every other weekend job at the hospital which nets me about 6500 a year assiting XRay techs. My total net will be about 51k between both jobs. I have to save more though. Thats where the real problem may be actually

I live in Bufalo and make $36k myself. I know cats gonna try to clown but, at the age of 26 I bought my first house. Its really where your at and how much can make you comfortable. Like I said earlier, its what you save not what you make.

there are a lot of jobs that can put you in the 100k range without college education

the fact that you own your own place put you ahead of a lot of people. If you make enough where you pay all your bills ON TIME and still have something left over then you're good. If you want to see what your salary does in other cities check out this site:
