Web design business

I am thinking about starting a web design business but I don’t know were to start.

Well someone ask me to build them an ecommerce website. I have never made an ecommerce site before and I’m looking any advice I can get. This person knows nothing about websites but wants to sell their product. Another thing is that I have only made websites for myself and never for others. I have a lot of questions that I need help with.

  1. Do I purchase the domain name in my name or should I make them purchase it?
  2. What is good price to charge them?
  3. Are there any laws or regulations that I have to be aware of when selling a product?

Does any one know of any good tutorials to guide me through this process?
I am searching for some now.

Thank in Advance

Re: Web design business

I subscribed to this thread; I would like to see some of the advice that comes up.

Re: Web design business

Are you a designer or a programmer? If your a designer I would find a really good programmer who can program in asp/.net as well as php. You design the look and feel of the sites he/she makes them work. The hardest part about a business like that is getting business. So many people are uneducated about the wed and the inter-workings.

1. Do I purchase the domain name in my name or should I make them purchase it?

Find a good hosting company and use them for every site add the cost of the domain name as well and a years worth of hosting to the cost of the site. Buy the domain from a godaddy or directnic and after everything is done and setup. You can change the ownership information. I use godaddy and always pay for the service that hides my address and things so im just not flooded with mail.

2. What is good price to charge them?

depends on how much time is involved when I used to do design I used to charge by project no hourly rate. Its based on 90$ but I would guesstimate how much total time and give them that price. Half up front(to pay for hosting and also makes them be serious about finishing)

3. Are there any laws or regulations that I have to be aware of when selling a product?

its not your issue thats there issue they sell the product you don't. You just displaying it online. You never assume any responsibility when it comes to that kinda stuff.

Re: Web design business

find a programmer or learn php/asp that the only tutorial. When i need a programmer quick i use guru.com you post a job someone bids on it and you pick.

Re: Web design business

If you want ecommerce get OSCommerce. Its open source (Meaning FREE) Everything is already set up for you. ALl you need is a server with php and MySQL. THere is a HUGE support community that can answer any question you have. OSCOmmerce will make you look like a big boy! It has a admin back end so your client can update or change products. The only drawback to OSCommerce is that they are not easily "skinnable". BUT never fear, MR JODY is here. If you decide to go with OSCOmmerce, I have like ten different fully skinned stores that I would be willing to post here. All you have to do is add your products and you can be selling tomorrow. No joke. Post in this thread if you want it. But download and install OSCommerce first and let me know if it will suit your needs...

Re: Web design business

I am more of a programmer than a designer but I have some templates that I am looking at. The only language I know now is php so I should be OK on the programming side. I'm going to check out OSCommerce.

Thanks for all the advice.

ZenCart is a much better product than OSCommerce - trust me on this as we've done many installs/customizations on both. ZenCart can be customized to look more like a "real", professional website. If you have not done this before, I would recommend sending this customer to someone who has, provided you can do a portion of the contract as like a trainee. Team up with them and learn all you can. You may also consider working for a contract company.

We charge on avg. approx $8K - $10K for a standard website. Sounds like a lot, but every customer does what we call "scope creep" - they ask for something basic to drive the price down, then they ask for the world once money has changed hands. We built an SDK that we use to crank out websites in a MS ASP.net / SQL Server 2000 Enterprise environment. It is an ideal 80/20 solution and provides maximum functionality and content management.

I recommend using Godaddy for a host and you can either a.) become a reseller to make money off of the hosting and domain registration, b.) ask the customer to register with Godaddy, or c.) ask for the customer's billing information (i.e. - credit card, address, etc) and you process the order for them. If you try to get involved in any other way, you will always lose money.

I know I sound boring, but please utilize a standard process for your development cycle and document everything. And of course, never deliver the product until the final payment is made. Utilize a staging server to demonstrate progress. Ask for a full payment up front or at least a 50% downpayment and the rest upon delivery. Once you get all the money, load the project to the server and deliver the source on DVD or CD.

Let me know if you have specific questions and good luck.

www.oscommerce.com

You'll come off like a champ.

Im running CRE B2B, which is like a souped up version of OsCommerce.

I havent had it templated yet (had to wait till payday!).
Im gonna have at one of those freelance sites install it for me. The highest bid I got was $125.

1) They purchase with their card,
2) Depends on how much work you do. You can install and set up
a full oscommerce store in 20 minutes (+ time to add individual products)
You can get $100 bucks for one of them..
3) What are you selling?
Dynamite, Human body parts, bootleg DVD's, anthrax, PORN: Yes
Teddy Bears, candles, socks and how to be a pimp books? No
