This Thursday, the World Boxing Council ruled that unbeaten current middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KOs) will have to expose his belt against champion in recess/WBC diamond beltholder Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KOs). Chavez Jr wanted to fight the official challenger Marco Antonio “Veneno” Rubio but the representatives of ‘Maravilla’ Martinez urged the WBC to stop overprotecting the Mexican fighter and order this Chavez-Martinez.
“Chavez Jr. still has not faced any good fighter to this day I do not see any chance for him to win,” said Martinez.
One source indicated the possibility that Chavez Jr could vacate his WBC middleweight crown in the search for a match against WBA super welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto.
