From now until the end of time, Mark Jackson will always appear to have some resentment toward the Golden State Warriors.

The NBA on ESPN analyst, and former Warriors coach, called Golden State's NBA Finals rematch against the Cleveland Cavaliers for ABC on Friday and said the reigning MVP Stephen Curry, who leads the league at 30.8 po

ints per contest, is "hurting the game."

Micah Peters of For The Win transcribed Jackson's comments in full:

Steph Curry’s great. Steph Curry’s the MVP. He’s a champion. Understand what I’m saying when I say this. He’s hurting the game. And what I mean by that is that I go into these high school gyms, I watch these kids, and the first thing they do is they run to the 3-point line. You are not Steph Curry. Work on the other aspects of the game. People think that he’s just a knock-down shooter.

Vincent Goodwill of CSN Chicago seems to agree with Jackson:

Vincent Goodwill @vgoodwill

Mark Jackson will get killed for saying that because he’s Mark Jackson but I’m not sure I want to see hoops evolve to just 3-point shots

Upon hearing about Jackson's comments, teammate Andrew Bogut was quick to dismiss them, per Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (h/t Diamond Leung of the Bay Area News Group), "Anything he says you take with a grain of salt, and you can quote me on that."

Oh, where to begin with this one.

First, Curry is a once-in-a-generation player and sharpshooter, much like Reggie Miller and Ray Allen were. These all-time great shooters come in bunches. The only difference with Curry is, he's the superstar on a championship team and he's literally the most valuable player on the Warriors.

Comparing what Curry's doing to what high school players are doing is unfair. High school players want to emulate what the pros are doing. If they want to aspire to make hundreds of three-pointers in a season and put in the work to do such, then it's not a bad thing for young players to pattern their game after a superstar.

Apparently, it wasn't much of an issue when Andrew Wiggins was being called the next LeBron James, and it will be the same topic of conversation when LSU freshman Ben Simmons goes pro—because those guys are long, athletic and provide the flashy highlight dunks.

Maybe the NBA wouldn't be a three-point-heavy league if more teams got away from playing zone defense. The Warriors move the ball better than any team in the league, with the possible exception of the San Antonio Spurs.

With guys like Curry and Klay Thompson moving without the ball and being effective in catch-and-shoot situations against a zone, of course there are going to be more open perimeter shots. Maybe it's the zone defense killing the game, not Curry.

Better yet, Curry is making the game fun again. A kid from Davidson becomes the face of the franchise and the league MVP, and he's doing things all non-athletic kids can aspire to do. If he's inspiring kids to take threes and be successful that way, at least he's somehow making a difference.

Remain forever salty, Mark Jackson.

Gotta love the media lol. When you listen to Mark Jackson commentate Warriors games you can tell he has a great deal of respect for those players. I understand what he is saying though and that's not a knock on Curry. It's just that the kids don't realize how hard the dude works to play at the level. But then again.....their kids so they won't.

Bogut and this writer are fucking imbeciles. Jackson's whole point is that Curry is NOT just a 3 pt shooter; he has a complete game. But... the spectacle of his 3 pt virtuosity may be influencing kids to be one dimensional. The same was MJ had everybody trying to make circus shots and Shaq had them trying to dunk 30 pts a game. He didn't say shit "salty" about Curry.

oh so kids are trying to learn how to shoot again..a lost skillset

Just shoot long range 3s... Not shoot as a whole. I remember when I was young like 10-12. Before games my dad would make me shoot and make... All net, 5 shots from 5 ft, 8 ft, 10 ft, and free throws before every game. If they're learning how to shoot, it's great. If they're just jacking up 3 balls. Not so much.

They probably told Bogut "Mark Jackson says Steph Curry is hurting the game...what do you think?"

im gonna give bogut the benifit of the doubt and assume the media told him "mark jackson said step curry is hurting the game" jus like that plain and simple and not in the context he said it in

The moment he said it, I knew it would be a bullshit story today :smh:

I don't doubt they did tell Bogut that, but just as Jackson needs to remain cognizant of how his quotes will be misconstrued, Bogut must know by now that the media loves using out of context quotes to manufacture controversy. Instead, he took bit bait and took the barb to another level.

This seems very clear

I understood exactly what he was saying but he shouldn't have made it exclusive to curry is hurting the game..

What's hurting the game is AAU and a lot of these kids not having the basic fundamentals of how to play.. A lot of them learn playing on the playground..

Even Dell Curry said he refused to let his boys play AAU ball..

Exactly it's par for the course.. At least with curry he's not a selfish player

Everyone knew what he was trying to say and Bogut is a dumbass for falling for it.

To be fair, kids were jacking threes waaaaaay before Curry. Curry ain't hurt shit, so Jackson really shouldn't have mentioned Curry in the first place. Could have just made a general statement. Mofos were running to the 3 point line and trying to bust ass off the dribble from 3pt range as long as I ever played the game. Nothing's changed, Curry just gave these mofos more hope.

I remember being a kings fan and watching those guy launch 3s like 2 points wasn't necessarily a real thing. But then again, those guys weren't winners.

Bogut bitch ass stay taking shots at Jackson, he never liked him, Bogut is a joke and would have been an injury prone bust if it wasnt for his career revival under Jackson, he dont even see the floor in crunch time

Just like these young wide outs. They're not working on the fundamentals anymore, just working on the one arm catches like the blonde ballerina. Working on that is cool, but you better be damn sure you can catch with two hands before trying to catch with one.

Stephen Curry Responds to Mark Jackson's Claim He's 'Hurting the Game'

Former Golden State Warriors head coach and current NBA analyst Mark Jackson set the basketball world ablaze Friday when he asserted reigning MVP Stephen Curry is "hurting the game" of basketball due to the influence his long-range shooting has on younger players, but the Dubs point guard seemed confounded by the comments following his team's Christmas Day win.

"I have to talk to him," Curry said, according to Yahoo Sports' Marc Spears. "I don't know what he means by that. If you can shoot, shoot. If you can't, stop."

During the broadcast of Friday's 2015 NBA Finals rematch between the Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers on ABC, Jackson discussed the way he believes Curry is hindering the development of aspiring ballers.

To a degree, he's hurting the game. And what I mean by that is I go into these high school gyms, I watch these kids and the first thing they do is run to the three-point line. You are not Steph Curry. Work on your other aspects of the game. People think that he's just a knockdown shooter. That's not why he's the MVP. He's a complete basketball player.

To Jackson's point, Curry is a complete player who has committed tremendous time and energy to honing every aspect of his arsenal. While he's knocking down 44.5 percent of his triples on 10.4 long-range attempts per game, Curry is also slicing and dicing defenses inside the arc.

Stephen Curry's 2015-16 Shot Chart
Curry is shooting a career-best 58.8 percent on two-point field goals. He's also converting an outrageous 57.3 percent of his drives, per NBA player-tracking data, which makes him the league's most efficient scorer on such plays (minimum five drives per night).

And at the crux of Curry's three-point effectiveness is his handle. The league's premier marksman consistently frees up space for open shots by taking defenders off the dribble, and he's knocking down a wicked 39.1 percent of his pull-up treys to date, according to NBA player-tracking data.

However, it remains a bit of a stretch to say Curry is hurting the game just because young players want to emulate his immaculate skill.

"He is a special player, a special talent, a special person more than anything, and I think it's great for our league," LeBron James said, per Spears.

Curry epitomizes the NBA's pace-and-space era with his long-range theatrics, and the way he's stunned crowds and inspired up-and-coming hoopers has made him one of the faces the Association can be proud of.

And if that means kids will try jacking up a few more threes as they develop, that's hardly the worst thing.
