After 11 long years on sale the New Beetle is dead – its successor is this, The Beetle. We'll just call it the new 2011 VW Beetle.

2011 VW Beetle: trading flower-power for outlaw rodder

Wider, lower and longer, the 2011 Beetle abandons its predecessors three semi-circle styling for the flat-roof look of 2005’s hot rod-inspired Ragster concept.

At the front, the Beetle adopts the corporate horizontal intake styling and a more angular front bumper melded with a less curvaceous evolution of the 1998 New Beetle styling template.

The flattening of the New Beetle's curves continues in profile and at the rear we see a standard integrated spoiler below the rear window. More complex tail-light clusters fit with the current corporate style book, while overall the Beetle is a more aggressive, masculine design.

As well as bringing a silhouette more reminiscent of the original VW, the new styling means less headroom, and despite being bigger than the Golf in all dimensions, its boot is smaller than its parts-sharing sibling too. So the form-before-function approach of the 1998 original hasn't disappeared altogether with the new generation.

Inside the 2011 VW Beetle
The Beetle's interior makes a significant leap forward in perceived maturity over the 1998 car's simple geometric design. The central facia can be specified in body colour or the carbonfibre-look trim shown in the official photos.

There are three specification levels on the Beetle - basic Beetle, more luxurious Design, or top-line Sport for all the enthusiasts the more coupe-like, aggressive 2011 Beetle is presumed to attract. The car can be specified with an optional panoramic glass roof, and a 400W Fender sound system amongst a range of customised trim options. The 1998 car's flower vase is noticeable by its absence on this lower-set, more sporting interior design.

The Beetle's powerplants

All European engines are turbo’d four-pots, with 103bhp and 138bhp on offer from the 1.6 and 2.0 diesels, and 103bhp (1.2-litre), 158bhp (1.4) and 197bhp (2.0) available from VW’s TSI units.

The top two petrols feature the XDS electronic differential from the Golf GTI, and the entry-level Bluemotion Technology oiler is the cleanest and most fuel efficient Beetle ever: 65.7mpg and 112g/km CO2.

The new Beetle is set to debut simultaneously at the 2011 Shanghai motor show, 2011 New York motor show and a special media event in Berlin.

I usually dont look at a Beetle twice but I think I like this look and might pick one up if I can :yes:

not passing no judgment on no one but to the dudes considering getting this, the beetle and that mini cooper joint are strictly for the chicks... strictly for the chicks... that's all i gotta say about that.

They put a little Audi TT in it.

Yeah probably more than you know. The "old" new beetle was based on the same frame and runnning gear that was used for the VW Golf, the Seat Ibiza, the Skoda Fabia and the Audi A3 and TT of the time.

VAG got their money out of that chasis/sub-frame

I like it but my big ass cannot fit that car.

You must be a huge nigga, because I'm a hair under 6' 6" and 240lbs., and I have no problem fitting comfortably in my Prius.

I dig the VW. I could see myself buying either a hybrid or flex-fuel version of this car.

I'm not passing judgement either, but some of us don't feel the need to compensate for various shortcomings with vehicles. :D

I wouldn't have any problems with driving this chick car

looks like a PT Cruiser and a MINI had consensual sex after a slightly erotic date of dancing finished with a horse and carriage ride through downtown Atlanta, then 9 months later had this beautiful baby girl and named her "The Beetle"

I would fuck, but I wouldn't wife.

The MINI Cooper S and the JCW Cooper are great cars. Fantastic gas mileage coupled with extraordinary handling. The MINI routinely hangs with or bests Porsches, Ferraris, 'Vettes, etc. on the track. Go drive one, maybe you'll change your mind.

i'd roll one. fuck y'all niccas.

i own a big toyota truck, but dat bitch is parked while i roll my old honda civic at 36 mpg.

gas is $3.75 for regular unleaded, and while some people NEED cars to boost their confidence and pussy rate, i don't.

a car is simply a means to get me to/from where i NEED to be, not where i want to show-off.

times too hard for all that shit... at least for me.

What is the Beetle's actual competition?

It's too big to be a sub-compact, so it doesn't go up against the Fit, Yaris, Fiesta, etc.

VW's main compact is the Golf. That competes with the Corolla, Civic, Focus, etc.

It doesn't get better gas mileage than a Golf, and it will never handle better than a Golf. Plus the Golf is available in 2 doors also, so that eliminates the coupe only thing.

If it exists only to compete with the Mini and the upcoming Chrysler 500 (Fiat 500)

then that is a BIG gamble to take

A more "manly" Beetle huh? Good luck to the PR and Advertising dept. with that!
VW unwraps bigger, manlier Beetle

Volkswagen has unveiled a sportier design for its iconic Beetle in a bid to woo North American men and broaden the appeal of the Love Bug.

The revamped version, unveiled Monday and expected in Calgary showrooms this fall, is wider, has a flatter roofline and features a roomier interior, the German-based automaker said.

The overhauled model comes with a rear spoiler for the 160-horsepower and 200-horsepower versions.

The updated Beetle "will be so much more masculine," said VW spokesman Soh Weiming. "It will open up a new customer group for us.
"The model we have right now is a little bit more feminine, but the new car is exactly the opposite."

While some Calgary men do own a Beetle, said South Centre Fine Cars' sales manager Dave Lebo, it was a vehicle predominantly purchased by women. He points to the car's shape, as well as the fact it had a vase built into the dash.

"It drew the women's market," Lebo said, adding of the new design: "Based purely on the photo and the performance engine it should shift that number a bit."

The Beetle's buyers last year were more than 60 per cent female, the highest rate for any vehicle sold in the U.S., according to automotive website truecar.com.

Nissan's Rogue followed at 56 per cent and VW's Eos convertible was third at 55 per cent, according to truecar.

The VW brand doesn't have any models ranked in the top 20 models among male purchasers in the U.S.

VW brought back the car in 1998 to capitalize on nostalgia for the model, which was featured in films such as Walt Disney's The Love Bug comedy series as main character Herbie.

Jerry Sturko, general manager at Fifth Avenue Auto Haus, said when that re-design came out most customers were women who had owned the original version in high school.

"Ladies took over that vehicle," he said, cautioning, "I don't know if they've made the (new) car more masculine. It's a little sleeker. I feel it will attract male customers as well as female customers."

Dennis Desrosiers, of Desrosiers Automotive Consultants, said the existing Beetle market may have been tapped out.

"One of the problems with all those iconic vehicles is there's a relatively narrow part of the market that they play to. And once that narrow part of the market has been exhausted, it's hard to maintain any sort of sales volume," he said. "Vehicles like the Beetle need to explore new territory to have any chance of success.

"It doesn't surprise me at all that they're doing that."

Europe's biggest automaker unveiled the redesigned Beetle at events in Shanghai, New York and Berlin.

It's the Beetle's second overhaul since the original was developed and built during the 1930s in Nazi Germany.

"The Beetle was anything but a very masculine car," said Kevin Tynan, an automotive analyst at Bloomberg Industries. "It fostered the perception in the U.S. of VW as a more feminine brand. VW has some work to do to improve its appeal with male consumers and it looks as if they're now addressing the issue."

VW last November showed a silhouette of the revamped Beetle on Oprah Winfrey's talk show and gave 275 of the cars away to her studio audience to stoke interest in the model. The new version may boost U.S. sales to 30,000 Beetles next year from 20,000 in 2011, according to automotive website Edmunds.com. A range of four-cylinder engines allow the Beetle to reach a maximum speed of 226 km/h.

They put a little Audi TT in it.

Like a TT and Porsche 964 mated and had a fat kid.

I wouldnt rock one stock, but those VW guys are dope when it comes to the aftermarket. I am sure I would be feeling a custom one.

In the first thread where this was posted somebody posted some pics of them lowered that looked pretty dope.

Big cars = I ride around with a lotta dudes, or I have a family.
Small sporty cars = I'm a lone wolf.
