Verizon to restrict devices to its own app store

:lol::lol::lol:
It seems that way doesn't it. Any phone with access to apps opens a pandora's box to Iphone comparison whether positive or negative. :smh:

50,000 apps across the broad spectrum of uses and yet Ninjas still trash on it? I find the dissing irrational and the solution is quite simple... just get another phone but the constant berating is very irrational.

If Palm or RIMM were in the very same position, nobody would say shit. I keep trying to have rational conversation but it seems that all people want to do is trash the iPhone and Apple.

Did Apple create a Jesus phone noooo. Did they invent anything new, noooo what they did was improve the process/methodology some one interacts and adds functionality to a smart phone.

Did Palm just invent a Jesus phone. Nooo. They just added a different methodology to switching from one app to another. They all can run the same stuff as long as a developer makes it.

This irrational hate keeps sideswiping the conversations. Create an I hate anything Apple thread and vent in there. Then maybe we can stay on subject.

No need to convince me. I'm not running an anti-Iphone campaign. I only made a joke about that 1 particular app. Iphone has no place in this thread otherwise as we're here to bash on Verizon for trying to lock down their phones yet again.

 No trying to convince you bro. I was just highlighting the fact when we talk about smart phones I see the bash coming a mile away now.

As far as bashing Verizon. I have not intended for it to be such. I think Verizon realizes that AT&T for all the good it brought for them, the iPhone is bringing AT&T to its knees network wise becuase people are using the iPhone heavily and very often. As Phones more similar to the iPhone penetrate Verizon, the traffic will increase heavily. Verizon wants to make sure they have first dibs on a toll booth for all that extra traffic. Which will be massive if they get the right Phones or wrong phones  depends on your stance.

Verizon also recently changed its tune and is requiring from now on the all smartphones have Wifi. Maybe they realized that Smartphones are Officially a part of the average non-techy/Non I.T. consumers life and they need to afford the best experience. Wifi is still unmatched.

Verizon could have been way ahead when years ago Verizon was turning their phone booths into Wifi hotspots, but they only allowed the folks with their DSL service access to them circa 2001 or 2002. (luckily around that time I could make use of the Bryant Park free wifi [midtown manhattan] on my Palm OS Powered Sony Clie NX70 )

Could you imaging if the old school thinkers there had better vision on the future. Beause Wifi would have been on their smart phones like skittles. Instead they are just starting the wifi revolution to make it a norm, and not as a special Geeky tool as it was in the past.

PS: And why stop at smartphones. I am willing to bet that Dumbphones are about to explode on the scene with much more improved web browsers and will need the wifi speeds to be enjoyable like on the Smartphones. This can be very true once the HTML 5 standards are worked out. No need to wait for third party plug ins.

The adult content restrictions make no sense. Apple made all the craigslist apps remove the adult/erotic section. Well, with safari you can access this content plus any other xxx content on the web. Makes no sense at all.

The day that app was released where the guy put porn on it via a back door the press was already reporting that Apple is allowing porn in the app store. That's the main reason why they pulled it the same day. It's not going to come out that someone made it, it's going to come out that Apple made it.

Most companies don't not want to be associated with distributing Pornographic material.

However there are workarounds like you going to a website.

But Apple is not going to approve that. I doubt other would as well. I can easily see some Parents group or some other organization picketing. They are just avoiding the headaches.

The key difference is that Apple implemented Parental Controls for iPhone OS X - including Safari. So while you can access porn webs, you can also stop your kids from doing the same.

A third party iPhone developer could also apply Parental Controls to their app; the Parental Control API is accessible via the iPhone X-code System Developers Kit. Some developers don't apply Parental Controls and then wonder why their app doesn't get approved. :smh: Duh!

:lol::lol: Wow I didn't think of that. You are right. There are scantly clad babes apps on the iPhone.

For example heres a screen shot off my phone. The app is called Baberoo Lite, and the Apps does have an age restriction.

I still doubt Apple would allow XXX content in their store though. Maybe Verizon will?

If a phone has the juice to run a decent web browser, then it has the juice to be a smart phone. Therefore, a dumb phone with a browser == a crippled smart phone.

iSuppli estimated that Bill of Materials for the Android G1 at$143.89.

These are the parts that make it a smart phone:

baseband... $28.49 (an ARM11 microprocessor for multimedia applications and an ARM7 core for modem functions)

display... $19.67 (a 3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with HVGA resolution, at 320 by 480 pixels)

camera... $12.13 (a 3 megapixel resolution and an autofocus feature)

the Radio Frequency (RF)/Power Amplifier (PA)... $9.84 (supports a high-speed 3.5G network connection using the HSDPA air standard.

Which parts would you leave out to make a dumb phone, and how much would you save?

Drop the ANDROID operating system and you have a dumb phone.

I never came up with that term. I think the usage of the Term "Dumb Phone" means phones that it doesn't have a full blown OS like WinMo or Web OS or Android or iPhone. Usually they are one offs and the experience changes even when you get the next in line of the same brand the experience is a big change but with the smartphones there is an element of familiarity.

Imagine the amount of change going from a LG VX8000 to a LG VX10000. The UI changes constantly. Smart phones have established UI and are usually the same barring additions when you get the upgrade.

Now don't get me wrong. The moniker "Dumb Phones" doesn't mean they are dumb and they can be quite powerful if designed right, For example the LG DARE and Samsung INSTINCT are powerful but in no way classify as smartphones.

Smartphones usually can be improved incrementally and substantial improvements without having to buy a new handset. With "Dumb phones" you usually have to buy a new handset to get improvements along the same family line. LG VX series is an example.

"Multimedia Phones" is a fairly new classification for highly specialized "Dumb phones" that are nearly powerful as a smart phone but are not as extensible as a smart phone.

Verizon knows that 9 out of 10 people would prefer to have good service over a nice phone/phone with a bunch of extra, etc. Thats why they feel that no matter what they do to their phones, customers wont go anywhere, because the service is too good. Like me, i cant go back to sprint or at&t because the service is horrible in my area. besides, i get a nice discount on my bill thru my job, plus discounts on accessories and phones.

Whats there to poo poo about. I know dumb phones that have the same features and plug into the yellow pages. What really is the problem you have with Apps.

People do use them. Like on Xbox live, does everybody play the same games? no, everyone has their likes and dislikes.

And as far as a compass goes, if you do hiking isn't that of some use. The fact that you are standing still and it can detect which way you are facing isn't of some use? maybe not to you but people do want it.

Nobody is forcing it on you to use it.

PS: You do know the iPhone isn't the only device with apps. Lets see the Pre, G1 including RIMM Storm.

I got 3 friends that used the compass because they hike alot.

Did Apple create a Jesus phone noooo.

According to the CEO of Nokia, what Apple created was a Moses phone, that led it's customers out of bondage and into the promised land (my words, not his). When asked how come no one came up with an iPhone before Apple, he explained that the cellphone companies had a $200. ceiling. They believed that phones costing more than $200. wouldn't sell, and refused to consider them. Therefore, handset makers were limited to what they could build for less than $200.

Apple broke through that barrier by convincing AT&T to sell the $599. iPhone UNSUBSIDIZED. This accomplished three things: 1) it eliminated the risk to AT&T; 2) it removed the $200. limit on what Apple could build; and 3) it proved that a $599. with the right features would sell.

The Nokia CEO freely admits that his company went along with the carriers dictates; they didn't want to antagonize the carrier's and risk their other products.

Great find Garifuna. Thats exactly what most haters of Apple don't understand. Ninjas don't have to buy the device but for goodnesses sake understand What APPLE has done. If Apple didn't do what they did Nokia would still be getting their asses told what to do and how to do it. Apple free'd up the handset manufacturers and app developers and the people get what they want. Now the carriers need to focus on making the best 4G network, improving coverage and such, and get out of the fuckin' handset business. They are a service provider not handset maker.

Here's part of an article on Verizon's sudden turnabout. Hear it from the mouth of Verizon itself.

...I assume he means Apple’s App Store for the iPhone, which has reinvented the idea of mobile applications by making the process of consuming such apps easier on consumers, and the approach to offering them less painful for developers. Hughes never mentioned Apple by name, but he said the carrier has changed its philosophy toward application stores. He said Verizon has offered content for years using Qualcomm’s Brew platform for feature phones, but smartphones were left out. Now that smartphones are so popular with consumers rather than merely with corporate users, having applications is becoming more important, and those apps are coming from a greater number of providers.

“There’s been a huge influx in content largely due to the other app catalogs, from the middle-tier and long-tail developer community. We’ve always had deals with companies like ESPN and EA, but now there are all these mom-and-pop developers. So where there were once 20 or 40 developers that you needed to care about, now you have 100,000,” Hughes said. “Quite candidly, we didn’t have the framework to handle those applications in Brew.”

Verizon will still offer the Brew platform on its feature phones, but has now turned its energy to building out a Verizon app store for smartphones. Hughes admits these handsets are far more open than feature phones, which means that instead of approaching developers and consumers as a dictator, Verizon will have to make nice with an easy-to-use interface and quality design. We’ll see how well this goes.

Which is why there is so much excitement around the iPhone. Now more excitement is added because of the Android G1, Storm and Pre and more devices to the landscape and cater to different needs/desires.

Its one thing to not like a device, you just wait for what has what you want and buy it. But there are people harassing the hell out of iPhone users on this board because they mad at what I don't know. The iPhone forced Verizon to make an about face. I already explained how Verizon had a slew of hot spots years ago and REFUSED to open them up to smartphones.

There will never be a Jesus phone, its impossible, but I can agree there will be devices that move the game forward. The iPhone did us all a great justice, and now 3 years later the Pre is starting a Multi-tasking debate.

I'm sure all the other makers will respond next year or sooner to this challenge of running multiple apps in the most efficient way and there still won't be a perfect solution, just different ways to do the same thing.

-To the general Public-

You can love your device without having to insult each other.

Good perspective. I'm with verizon and love their coverage and appreciate at&t/apple for forcing their hand and making them step their game up. Just like firefox is making IE/ms step its game up.

Its funny because people say the left sprint because of customer service and go to verizon.

in my area
sprint customer service<<<verizon customer service
sprint plans>>>verizon plans
sprint service<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<verizon service.
sprint phones>>>>>>>>>>>>>>verizon phones.

i left sprint like 5 yrs ago b/c of terrible call coverage, and poor customer service. When I got to Verizon I found that their coverage in NYC was great, so I never had to call customer service.

But now that I want a smartphone, i'm starting to see how verizon is strong arming their customers. Why should a carrier force phone makers to pull out functionality from their phones? Offer me a service, and let me decide which is the best to use... don't force me to either use your version of the service or none at all. That's some bullshit.

People are saying that sprint's call quality is a lot better in NYC now... we'll see.
