Verizon has disclosed a number of details regarding its upcoming app store, including plans to prohibit handset makers from shipping devices with their own app portals, according to GigaOM. The restrictions will prevent immediate access to the BlackBerry App World or Windows Mobile Marketplace, although users will be permitted to add the stores manually.
Verizon's VP of Partner Management, Ryan Hughes, said in an interview that the carrier will integrate content from a variety of sources including Windows Mobile, Palm, Android and BlackBerry. Developers can create content for each platform, while each app that requires subscriber data or billing will require approval from Verizon.

The exact terms of the program remains unknown, although Verizon is expected to make considerable changes to attract a wider range of developers. The company will be competing amongst a number of other app stores attempting to bridge the gap with Apple's App Store, which currently hosts over 50,000 titles. The iPhone portal recently celebrated its first-year anniversary earlier this month, after reaching past one billion downloads in April.

"We’ve always had deals with companies like ESPN and EA, but now there are all these mom-and-pop developers," Hughes said. "So where there were once 20 or 40 developers that you needed to care about, now you have 100,000. Quite candidly, we didn’t have the framework to handle those applications in Brew.”

Hughes suggests the app store will be "competitive, not only with the price, but with the process and the simplicity which developers have come to expect in open ecosystems.” The comments could be considered a dig at Apple, which has received criticism from a number of developers frustrated with the alleged subjectivity of the App Store approval process.

Verizon claims its app store will be ready before the end of the year. Additional information will be available during the company's developer conference scheduled to begin July 28th in San Jose.

Uh didn't Microsoft try this shit in regards to internet explorer?

So now basically Verizon is saying any phone that is to appear on their network has to have Verizons App store and if say RIM ever wanted to include "RIM App World" on their consumer devices, it cannot be Pre-installed.

:smh: Not good Verizon not good. I always knew they were in bed with Microsoft but now they are acting like them. So will Microsoft also be force not to have their app store "SkyMarket" pre-installed on WinMo devices? How does it affect the iPhone and Pre.

The whole reason the manufacturers put they pre-install their App store on the devices is convenience. If Verizon wants to compete in that space they should just make a better App Store and not use draconian tactics.

This US mobile industry is doing itself in based on old school thinking.

Also, how will Verizon handle "XXX" rated software or Apps that connect to those portals. I know people love to complain about Apple and its restrictions but they have a purpose. I've seen restrictions crop up on other platforms as well once they realized the adverse effects of an app or concern their brand may be tarnished.

great coverage shitty customer services. users should be able to install whatever they please on their phones.

The adult content restrictions make no sense. Apple made all the craigslist apps remove the adult/erotic section. Well, with safari you can access this content plus any other xxx content on the web. Makes no sense at all.

damn... in theory this could be nothing more than a minor inconvenience for end users... but the principle behind it is a little troubling...

I wonder if that sprint store near me has any Pres left

Most companies don't not want to be associated with distributing Pornographic material.

However there are workarounds like you going to a website.

But Apple is not going to approve that. I doubt other would as well. I can easily see some Parents group or some other organization picketing. They are just avoiding the headaches.

Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commisssion I'm SURE will have something to say about all this in a moment.

I'll fly for awhile, but expect this shit to get shut down

This minor inconvenience actually affect the non-tech savy. They know the general public is lazy. A novice will likely get hooked on whatever is initially on the device.

Microsoft did this before. When Microsoft told Dell and others that they couldn't sell Windows if there was another browser pre-installed. Thus give IE instant dominance. That sealed the doom for Netscape. They also did that regarding GEOS. Microsoft threatened the PC makers not to sell it Pre-installed or else they wouldn't sell Windows to them.

I see Verizon catching a lawsuit soon.

I personally left Verizon once they kept breaking shit like the Motorola V710. And they got their asses sued.

All phone companies suck. I had AT&T and that shit was HORRIBLE. I mean what yall niggas expect? I have had no problems with verizon.

I went from Verizon to AT&T and I have had no problems. I think everybody's experience is different. I just did over a gig in traffic on my phone for the month and AT&T been good to me. Its subjective...But this isn't about who's network is better. The focus is on the fact that VERIZON is blocking other App Stores from being Pre-Installed.

I don't use all that AP shit anyways so it means nothing to me.

verizon sucks
More than you know. Horrible selection of PDAs w/ lowered hardware specs & limited ability on those devices. Between that & the abnormally high prices for data service, I don't know how people swear by Verizon. :smh:

When I used to do blackberry support, Verizon & AT&T gave the most issues in trying to resolve simple problems. T-Mobile was best followed by Sprint.

Ummm People say the same shit about AT&T. None of what you say means much because AT&T caused me to go to their headquarters and demand an explanation of the $2000 phone bill they sent me in which they could not explain how the charges got that high. Fuck them faggots.

I can't fault you for feeling that way. Like someone said earlier, everyone has had different experiences with these carriers. I just know that Verizon cripples a lot of the phones features &/or hardware & dealing with their corporate customer service was a nightmare.

You know i'm right though. All those useless pointless applications on the Iphone are just stupid.

YOu're somewhat right, all these apps and features but how many do people really use? I mean a yellowpages app on a iphone? A compass app on a iphone?

Maybe they plan on going to Vegas & walking around in the desert where there's no signal.

Whats there to poo poo about. I know dumb phones that have the same features and plug into the yellow pages. What really is the problem you have with Apps.

People do use them. Like on Xbox live, does everybody play the same games? no, everyone has their likes and dislikes.

And as far as a compass goes, if you do hiking isn't that of some use. The fact that you are standing still and it can detect which way you are facing isn't of some use? maybe not to you but people do want it.

Nobody is forcing it on you to use it.

PS: You do know the iPhone isn't the only device with apps. Lets see the Pre, G1 including RIMM Storm.

How the hell did a thread about Verizon blocking ALL other App stores from being Pre-Installed turn into a dis the iPhone thread? Honestly?
:lol::lol::lol:
It seems that way doesn't it. Any phone with access to apps opens a pandora's box to Iphone comparison whether positive or negative. :smh:
