Verizon Says Smartphones Can Replace PCs

With the introduction of 1GHz CPUs in smartphones, the devices could replace PCs in the future claims Verizon.

During the Mobilebeat 2010 conference
held in San Francisco, California, Humphrey Chen, director of new technology development at Verizon Wireless, indicated that smartphones could replace PCs in the future. more specifically, they could be hooked up to a docking station with a keyboard, camera and monitor, transforming the smartphone into a full-fledged PC replacement.

"With gigahertz processors, the divide between the smartphone and PC has narrowed," said Chen. "That's Microsoft's worst nightmare because there is no Windows or Office revenue, but there's a big Google Apps and Verizon cloud computing opportunity there."

Chen is referring to the proposed smartphone/PC setups that could access Verizon's Long Term Evolution networks currently operating in Seattle and Boston. Although only established as a trial, users are experiencing 10 Mbits/s downloads and 5 Mbits/s uploads. Naturally hooking up smartphones to a desktop-like configuration would be ideal for at-home use.

Another proposition Chen offered at the conference was to create separate consumer and business clients on a single handset. This would suggest that carriers could bill two parties for services on the device. "We are exploring virtualization technology to make that happen," he said.

Chen also revealed how much Verizon spent upgrading its network to 4G. "We spent $9 billion on 700 MHz spectrum to take coverage to the next level for 4G, and now we are spending billions of top of that to build the networks out."

what else is the cellphone carrier gonna say

they are not the only ones though, nvidia made a similar comment, only more spread out saying smartphones, superphones and tablets

PCs archaic, mobile is the future declares NVIDIA

Silicon is the key part of any platform, declared NVIDIA’s VP of mobile content Neil Trevett, speaking at an “apps everywhere” panel at MobileBeat on Tuesday.

Trevett, in charge of enabling applications on the supposing slew of upcoming NVIDIA smartphones and tablets said he believed anything from HD TVs to car infotainment systems would benefit from the “lots and lots of GPU goodness,” his firm’s Tegra chipset could provide.

“PCs will soon seem very archaic,” said Trevett, whose firm currently relies on the PC market to make a living. “Mobile computing is the future. Mobile is the web, the web is mobile, the two are really integral,” he continued.

Trevett outlined how NVIDIA was already working with German car manufacturer Audi, for instance, to install Tegra into every car the firm manufactured. “We’re working hard to make the Audi DT, the ultimate mobile device,” he said. “That’s one expensive Bluetooth headset,” quipped someone from the audience.

NVIDIA, like a multitude of others in the mobile space, is also banking on Google’s Android for its coming-any-day-now-really-we-promise superphones and tablets.

“For NVIDIA, coming from a PC perspective to the world of mobile, we really see the benefit of the open approach versus that of a closed one,” said Trevett, following up to clarify, “we really see the benefit of Android over Apple.” Not that Apple would have been an option, but just as an FYI to Jobs and the Cupertino crew.

“Android is going to be the Windows of the mobile world,” said Trevett adding, “did I just say that? Ooops, I’m going to get fired.”

Ultimately, Trevett told the audience, “the whole tech industry is going to win from the mobile trend,” and many opportunities lay ahead.

Talking privately to RCR Unplugged later on, Trevett confided that while one could never dismiss either Intel or Microsoft, it was clearly ARM and Google currently leading the race, and NVIDIA was backing the latter two as the winners.

So where were all these NVIDIA smartphones, superphones and tablets we’ve been promised for months and months then? “Well, there’s the Kin,” Trevett said, concluding jokingly with, “…oh, oops.”

For the people that only use a computer for social network sites, email, and small stuff then they basically dont need a computer now. My droid can do all that, I like looking at BGOL on a bigger screen tho....:lol::lol:

smartphones will replace pc's for media driven material. pc's will still be around to handle all tasks. but i am quite sure that for the daily reading/watching/listening smartphones will take over. to a certain extent it has already started to happen.

your not taking into account cloud.. everything going cloud from streaming movies and music, to saving your work to access it online where ever whenever without having a dedicated corporate computer at home to use for VPN, editing photoshop and video is already accessible, filemaker announced an iphone and ipad version, etc etc etc..

i also think the workplace is going dummy terminal with all the work on the servers, walking in with a tablet and docking it to a display and monitor that is connected to the company network is the future.

Dog, with DocsToGo you CAN do the basics of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint on your mobile device, but the experience will ALWAYS be significantly better on a computer for longer projects.

Gaming is all about higher and higher specs, so whatever can be squeezed into a handheld device will always be orders of magnitude less than what will be able to be done on computer.

tell that to nintendo who's handheld devices destroys the consoles.

its not that i dont agree the need for a more powerful computer/device and larger screen.. but the need starts to diminish after a while.

sending a kid to college used to consist of a computer and/or a laptop, maybe a tv, he may get a console, and full blown suites of office or adobe creative..

that's being replaced by netbook/tablet and a phone.. schools are also requiring these devices now. sure its starting at journalism schools and other specific areas but it all starts somewhere..

Smartphones will NEVER replace computers at typical universities. NEVER.

But have they replaced them?

depends who you ask.. some parents have a choice get their kid a wii, ps3, 360 or a gameboy.. the gameboy will entertain the kid everywhere he goes and its cheap and can go off into his room without the need for tv set up which handheld devices on tv's is pretty much here also, i dont know if the new 3ds has that feature..

sure you'll see me with a ps3 and a pc.. but many parents will and have opted for a handheld gameboy over a console.

were getting ahead of ourselves.. like someone above said thats what a phone carrier said.. nvidia was more on the money with the broader comment of mobile devices like smart or going forward superphones (thats just a stupid name) tablets etc..

what's is lacking and not here yet is connections for the tablets etc.. an imac like dock for your tablet, smartphones already act as pointers and remotes for meetings and presentations..

Missouri Journalism school is Apple's dreamland

The University of Missouri Journalism School, which you might remember from the below picture last year showing a pretty high percentage of Mac usage, is taking the Apple love one step further. They are now requiring incoming students to have iPhones or iPod touches. According to the Missourian, Brian Brooks, associate dean of the Journalism School, thinks the entertainment device can also be a learning device:

“Lectures are the worst possible learning format,” Brooks said. “There’s been some research done that shows if a student can hear that lecture a second time, they retain three times as much of that lecture.”

Freshmen admitted into the School of Journalism and pre-journalism students will be sent a letter notifying them of the change. Students may buy either an iPod touch or iPhone in order to meet the new requirement.

While it is technically a requirement, the mandate isn't going to be enforced. Students could purchase a Zune or use their laptops to play back lectures if they want to, but judging by the picture above, that isn't likely.

“The reason we put required on it is to help the students on financial need,” Brooks said. “If it’s required, it can be included in your financial need estimate. If we had not required it, they wouldn’t be able to do that.”

The project will use iTunesU to gather and distribute lectures to students.
This summer, Brooks said, the entire MU campus is installing a program called Tegrity which will allow the recording of lectures. Lectures can later be downloaded to media players through iTunes U which offers free content hosted by universities.

Brooks said MU is following other schools such as Stanford and Abilene Christian University in the use of this technology. The success of the new program will be evaluated at the end of the year, at which time Brooks said the program will be changed or scrapped.

“I anticipate it doing very well because it has proven to be very valuable to other universities,” he said.

a few things to point out is that it does not have to be an apple device they just used that as the description due to popularity and at the time there was maybe what? 2 maybe 3 zunes in existance? no android yet. the school set it up so it could be included in financial aid

but we have to put it all into context.. its just an introduction and an idea to say that computers will be replaced by mobile devices.. i can tell you that a good majority of employees in companies depending on their job will opt for a tablet over a desktop and/or a tablet over a notebook as their secondary/take home device. that i'm seeing at work already.

i've actually stopped taking my notepad to meetings and i just use my iphone to type my notes.

your right, computers wont be replaced today or tomorrow but they will eventually.. one of our offices outside of new york is running a trial on running work off of dummy computers with no offices or cubicles, just a sea of lunchroom style computer stations with no ownership, just sit down at any computer and use your log on and work off of the server on that empty computer.

there is talk of giving the managers and directors all mobile devices.. some of them live far from their work offices and lets face it they dont really do any work. they read presentations not work on them. some of them may complete their work on a terminal but if they can transfer the work to a tablet they will and work off of that.

my point is to not dismiss the possibilities of the future. sure some jobs demand something more powerful but if your talking about whats powerful today in a few years mobile devices will be as powerful as todays computers.. cats are overclocking phones now, running custom os's etc.. its a pc lifestyle already

But have they replaced them?

Smartphones will NEVER replace computers at typical universities. NEVER.

funny i can still hear people saying qwerty keyboards would never replace hand writing and phones would never replace value of a business card holder.

There are devices today that we use at my job that take the place of towers and small form factors. It is a "Wise" box that has no hardware only USB ports to connect a keyboard and mouse, network port and an on/off button. If any one works with Citrix, you know that you can have multiple users accessing Virtual desktops and Microsoft Apps from a remote server.

I would image in the future there will be a phone that acts as a hub where you would only need to connect the screen and other devices. It will act as your actual computer.

Bullshit. My rig kicks ass!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

in a few years our rigs will kick rocks

no one is talking about the hardcore uses really, at work we sometimes buy the cheapest pc's available because some users do not need anything above email and web.. maybe an application or two here and there.

dont forget that alot of applications are being created to eventually run on low power consumption

you know what, forget it

people just want to fight progress

people laughed at the qwerty keyboard, ipad, touch screens, registerless stores, online shopping etc..

Keyboards HAVEN'T replaced hand writing....people still write shit by hand. It's still taught in school and the ability to do it is still expected by pretty much everybody.

depends who you ask.. some parents have a choice get their kid a wii, ps3, 360 or a gameboy.. the gameboy will entertain the kid everywhere he goes and its cheap and can go off into his room without the need for tv set up which handheld devices on tv's is pretty much here also, i dont know if the new 3ds has that feature..

You're missing my point on this. I'm saying that hand held gaming has NOT replaced non-hand held gaming devices.

That is not to say that they haven't carved out their own market. (in the same way smart phones have carved out their own market, but they haven't replaced computers)

were getting ahead of ourselves.. like someone above said thats what a phone carrier said.. nvidia was more on the money with the broader comment of mobile devices like smart or going forward superphones (thats just a stupid name) tablets etc..

I don't get what point you're trying to prove. You talk about what your office is doing, but they're NOT riding themselves of computers. They're still using computers.

That U of Mizzou requiring students to purchase smart phones doesn't signal smartphones replacing computers at all. It's just an additional requirement (they still require a laptop). Look at companies that require employees (or at least certain employees) to have smart phones...they didn't then take away their computers.

And the reason I say it will NEVER happen, isn't because of power capabilities (well with gaming it is, because the best graphics and shit of any particular era will be available on a computer. Sure, it's possible that 10 years from now they'll be able to what can only be done on a computer now on a smart phone, but by then full fledged computers will have reached an even higher plateau). The reason I say it will NEVER happen in regards to office work is because of the ergonomics. It will ALWAYS be more comfortable to write grant proposals, policy documents, legal documents, etc. on a computer as opposed to a device that fits in your pocket.
