Virginia Tech track athlete David Eisenhauer was arrested Saturday and charged with the abduction and murder of a 13-year-old girl.
Blacksburg Police Chief Anthony Wilson announced the news at a press conference Saturday night, hours after the girl's remains were found in Surry County, North Carolina, per Tiffany Stevens and Tonia Moxley of the Roanoke Times.
"This was a huge investigation that involved, unfortunately, taking apart the life of a 13-year-old and figuring out where she was and who she had come in contact with," Wilson said. "I'm not going to go into all the specific pieces of it, but when the pieces did come together, Mr. Eisenhauer was identified."
Eisenhauer, 18, was listed as a distance runner on Virginia Tech's track and field team until the university removed his bio following his arrest. University spokesperson Tracy Vosburgh told the Roanoke Times that Eisenhauer had been placed on an immediate interim suspension in accordance with the school's policy on felony arrests.
A graduate of Wilde Lake High School in Columbia, Maryland, Eisenhauer won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the 2015 Maryland Indoor State Championships. He also won the 3,200-meter run at the 2014 Outdoor State Championships.
The Blacksburg Police Department did not indicate what evidence it had against Eisenhauer. The girl, identified as Nicole Madison Lovell, went missing from her apartment sometime early Wednesday. Her remains were found Saturday afternoon, by which time Eisenhauer had already been arrested.
Eisenhauer remains jailed in Montgomery County. He's charged with first-degree murder and abduction, both of which felonies.
