USPS warns it might have to shutter by June as $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package provides no funding

Fifty years ago, a postal worker strike halted mail delivery. The eight-day strike, carried out by 150,000 letter carriers across 30 cities, prompted then-President Richard Nixon to declare an emergency and send in the National Guard to deliver mail.

“The United States Postal System is a vital element of our entire communications system. The poor depend heavily upon it for medical services and also for government assistance,” Nixon said in an address to the nation. “Veterans depend on it for their compensation checks. The elderly depend on it for their Social Security checks.”

Today, the Postal Service is just as essential: It delivers about 1 million lifesaving medications each year and serves as the only delivery link to Americans living in rural areas. Working with other delivery services like UPS, the agency supports $1.7 trillion in sales and 7.3 million private sector workers year, and this year will prove essential to delivering the 2020 Census to citizens as well as any vote-by-mail initiatives. The USPS is the federal government’s most favorably viewed agency, with an approval rating of 90%.

Yet once again, the USPS is in crisis mode.

With a negative net worth of $65 billion and an additional $140 billion in unfunded liabilities, the USPS originally expected to run out of liquidity by 2021 without intervention. That has accelerated rapidly because of COVID-19. Fewer people and businesses are sending mail because of the outbreak, which could hasten the decline of the Postal Service and close its doors as early as June, officials warned.........

yea...i thought..since accordin' to the U.S. Constitution...the federal gov't has to provide a postal service...i thought that the post office got some sort of annual funding...

but i had a family member that retired from there...as a supervisor...and she said they don't get any type of funding...on an annual basis...at all...

they are basically expected to run like a business...except they can't fire anybody..or lay anybody off...

A lot of people think it's a taxpayer-supported entity, but it isn't. And the Congress fucked the USPS hard back with that pension bill in the mid 2000s.

All facts...

I gotta do some research on this and see who actually SUPPORTED this idea in the 2000s

Congress needs to ease up on the pension funding rules they put in place. They hurt them bad with that shit.
I believe they still operate mostly or totally off of revenue from postage $$, but no doubt they are being hurt with businesses being shuttered. Shit, anybody who has ever worked in a corporate mailroom has seen the fucking tons of annoying catalog type shit that comes to companies by the careful....all postage $, even though it's not first class $. With that type of mail decreased probably more than 40%.... they should get some relief like other business are.

The Constitution ALLOWS the government to provide a postal service, it doesn't mandate it.

The Repubs are just trying to kill it slowly. A lot of their debt comes from real estate. T hey don't own a lot of the land their buildings sit on so they pay exorbitant leases. Also, you know repubs don't want to give anybody a fucking pension or retirement so if they drive it in the dirt they can move that retirement money to their money management firms.

Post office has actually increased revenue on reduced volume.

It was a voice vote, so there is no record of who supported it. This past week that guy from Kentucky didn't want a voice vote for the stimulus so there would be a record of who voted for it.

Our government will probably just print more money, because this shit is bad.

And once again, this proves that the average American who is on their ass behind this shouldn't feel down on themselves or depressed. Entities that supposed to have way more money than the average Joe are on their asses with hands out. :smh:

This. It wasn’t two weeks into this before the airlines were begging for government assistance. And the Cheesecake Factory can’t even pay its rent for this month.

Post office was also one of the first institutions to enact fair hiring laws and regularly employ black people.

Bruh, maybe it's me. But does it feel as if something else is going on and were being distracted by the covid??

COVID isn't the distraction, it's the fucking spotlight. It shining the light on so many fucking things wrong with our government. Not only did they fuck up in January and February when China was doing drastic shit, out government has YEARS of incompetence that is now going to be highlighted. Shit don't get this bad because of one administration(as we see with the referencing of the 2006 act). Anyone who believes that shit just game goofy as hell. :smh:

This shit exposes just how fragile this house of cards is and has been. This shit exposes all the hypocrisy in the game. Cheesecake factory can't pay rent. Airlines claim they're fucked. USPS is fucked. Businesses across the country can't pay rent after a bad HALF month.

Meanwhile, regular folks get 1200 and probably have to fight to the death to just get that 600 bump in unemployment.

No distraction, just exposure.

Brotha, enuf said!!! Your so right!! The other day I was telling my lady, these hospitals have been doing the same shut all these other corporations have been doing!! Cutting corners and other cuts, then the president s getting sum huge raises or larger ass bonuses!! You would think hospitals would be ready for the most off the wall events!!! Or maybe it's just me seeing shot that way!! Anyway good ads reply!!

Fuck the usps, no matter which state you are in the people who work at the post office are slow as fuck, they will take 5 minutes to sell a stamp. Having a cushy job with sweet benefits does not give them any incentive to work faster.

Just another example of the republican controlled government fucking over the common man in favor of the rich and corporations.
Stop giving all those tax breaks to rich motherfuckers and big corporations and you'd have plenty of money. Tax those fuckers like you tax me goddammit.
Those bastards are always looking to cut from the people who can least afford it.

But you know what? We're the ones who allow this shit. Nothing will change until we start holding these fucks accountable.

Mfkrs get fired from the post office every day b....

But everything else is a1 correct. USPS is maintained by stamp and other postage/ shipping related fees... no tax / federal dollars

Amazon uses Usps

No Amazon "sometimes" uses USPS.

there are pockets ( read higher volume / wealthy cities) where the only Amazon packages USPS delivers are oversized, if at all. I have literally seen 5 different Amazon drivers within a 3 mile range in the same city. All in about 20 minutes. That post office doesn't deliver Amazon at all, not even Sundays anymore.

all I get is junk mail and bills anyway.

It's the fees from all those advertisements and bills that help keep regular stamp and package prices down. Believe that. With this partial shutdown we've noticed some stores haven't been advertising as much, which means less $$$

So if the USPS isnt funded how will that voting by mail go...

Exactly....and historically there is only one party that gets healthy numbers by mail.

If USPS can stop prefunding benefits it would appear very healthy on paper. But until then all most of the numbers appear in the red

They have so many contractors now. Might not be that hard. It's not like back in the day bruh.

Its distraction and exposure; they go hand and hand. And those businesses can pay they just dont want to plus they know the government will help them. And that's the real issue. Government allegiance to big businesses as opposed to protecting their people......

somebody high up in the usps... told me straight up...

the post office been privatized and is no longer part of the govt..

the post office not functioning means a whole lot more than what they are telling us...
It is still a part of the government but the government stopped sending subsidies. It instead was told to operate like a private business.
The problem is how congress forced them to prepay for benefits for every employee including new hires. Basically like a lot of government departments and functions the Republicans want to kill it and send those operations over to the private sector.
