A new study of self-assessed job satisfaction, gender and ethnicity in the U.S. military finds that African-American and Latino men and women have higher job satisfaction than white men, says Jennifer Hickes Lundquist of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Overall, African-American women have the highest levels of job satisfaction in the military, followed by African-American men, Latinas, Latinos and white women, Lundquist says.
Newswise — A new study of self-assessed job satisfaction, gender and ethnicity in the U.S. military finds that African-American and Latino men and women have higher job satisfaction than white men, says Jennifer Hickes Lundquist of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
In civilian society minorities consistently express lower job satisfaction.
The survey, which covers active-duty personnel, is published in the June 2008 issue of the American Sociological Review.
Overall, African-American women have the highest levels of job satisfaction in the military, followed by African-American men, Latinas, Latinos and white women, Lundquist says. She says a key to the findings is that the military has more social and economic equality than the civilian job market, and that is why racial and ethnic minorities and women report higher job satisfaction. In her study, Lundquist notes that the U.S. military is viewed as a rare example of a workplace with little racial discrimination due to its enforced Equal Employment Opportunity workplace structure and ethnic diversity.
“Military service can be quite demanding, requiring lengthy family separations and allowing the employee far less freedom and autonomy than civilian jobs,” Lundquist says. “It’s not surprising then that white males tend to have lower job satisfaction in the military than in civilian jobs. But what’s striking is that minorities express more satisfaction in military jobs than they do in civilian jobs. This makes a strong case for the continued position of disadvantage for minorities in many civilian jobs.”
Lundquist also says the findings support the idea that inequalities and discrimination, not cultural differences or values, account for race and gender differences in job satisfaction in the civilian job market.
She says, “By including Latinos, I show that other minority groups clearly benefit
from the meritocratic conditions of military life in similar ways as African Americans. Moreover, this is one of the few analyses of satisfaction to account for both gender and ethnicity, finding that black women and Latinas report extensive gains from military service relative to their white counterparts.”
White women, Lundquist says, also appear to have more positive experiences in the military than white men, although the differences are not as extreme as seen in the other groups.

Its funny how some who has never been in the military have so much to say about it.

So now you have to have been in the military to know something about it? How about having family in the military? Does that count as enough "experience"?

oh and McGuyver :hmm: that is all.

Sydney are you denying that these negative things I spoke of happen to people in the military? Are you dismissing them as a possibility?

What I think is that Im trying to go somewhere stable. I think I am afraid of the future. I keep going from job to job with no benefits and no stability within the job market. Many of you have posted with different opinions. My family is being very supportive of my decision. If dying is THE operative consequence you guys are talking about then that is not what I'm worryed about. I could've died years ago when I was stabbed on Josephine St.(3rd ward for yall that don't know , for yall from NO you know what Im talkin bout Central City is in itself a war zone) in the NO. Shit, I was in NYC for 9/11 and I was born and raised in NOLA so life has many extremes...I guess life is what you make it. After many of you posted about the Air Force I went on its website and I think I'm going to visit both recruiting offices to see what both will offer.

As a retired Army officer, I say you have to do what is best for you and your family. If you are looking for stability, it will not be evident at first (initial military training (and yes you should go in as an officer), on-the-job-training (learning your trade). The military is trying to keep everyone at their duty stations longer now then when I was in it. The Air Force has better duty locations but promotions are harder to come by. The Army has faster promotions, but limited overseas assignments for family members. Being an officer is much different than being an enlisted member and remember if you do take your children anywhere out of the country and they get into any trouble, it will come back on you (teenagers particularly). I say go for it.

worth dying for this bunch?

I have of family members that have been pregnant before does that make me an expert. Bottom line if you have not experience something then you can only give an opinion on what you have seen or heard and that is all you should have. An opinion should not turn into an expert's argument if you have not experience that which you are giving your opinion. PEACE

How exactly did it turn into an experts opinion. All it was was my opinion. But the FACT is that people do DIE. People do become CRIPPLES. and people do become CRAZY. That my friend is FACT. My BA in history makes me the expert in that. :hmm:

ok expert of the entire military how many actually go to war?
Of those who go to war what percentage are casualties?
How many are maimed?
How many Deployed (you know what that means......right?) actually see combat?

DID U EVER ENLIST IN THE ARMED SERVICES?

My career since 17 the only deaths I have bumped into are stupidity, DWI's, firefighter deaths and natural causes....

No one that I have known have died in war except for 6 firefighters that died in iraq for doing there jobs...nothing combat related...

There are so many different jobs and departments in the armed services

Just because you join the military doesn't mean you will be holding a M-16 the next day looking for Saddam/BinLaden...Officers are treated with the most utmost respect...She would be a bonus to armed services to come in with a degree and display her skills and talents...

I was in for 8yrs and begged to go to desert storm and iraq and they didn't send me cause of my MOS. Only person I have known to die was this dude who got shot at a club off post here in the U.S.
You would have to explain to these people about forward support, rear support, logistics, Ranks,etc...

guess you don't have to know how to read to enlist in the military. Its a shame really.

What I am saying is that I know for a fact that people die. Not that I am an expert in the military.

and by the way...enlisting in the military doesn't make you an expert either.

You guys can get offended all you want. I'll still say the woman should stay home and tend to her kids not to some silly man's war.

I am very happy that you have not seen death. But people are dying. http://www.timesdaily.com/article/20080324/ZNYT02/803240341/1011/RSS&source=RSS

Please believe that I do not assume that everyone in the military is hunting down Osama. I just do not think it wise for her to put herself in harm's way.

HAHA. HAHAHA. This is hilarious.

Why not join the reserves? A few weeks a year, not a total commitment, you would be close to home. You would have benefits, pay, without leaving a regular job. On the flipside, you could be activated and deployed, depending on military's needs for personnel. Your degree may help you get rank quicker...

Fact is people die during pregnancy. People become cripples during pregnancy and people do become crazy because of pregnancy. SHOULD WE STOP HAVING BABIES?? My BA in deductive reasoning and common sense makes me the expert in that. :hmm:

I would tell the OP to do what you want to do; I am against the war and wouldn't sign up because I have a lot of civilian options. However, like someone said earlier, you can use the army, don't let them USE you. Take advantage of a lot of shit they have to offer. The ONLY reason I would advise against YOU joining is because you have two teens/preteens and they are coming up on a time in their lives where they will really need their mother. That is the only thing.

Other job options: If you're looking for stability, become a teacher. Depending on the area you live in, you can get emergency certification and they'll stipend you to get the real certs.

Also, gov't jobs. 8 to 5 EVERYDAY, no weekends, mad holidays, crazy benefits. I speak from experience.

Basic training - missouri (cold as fuk)

Germany - 2yrs

45days in turkey - Deployment exercise (that means we simulated being deployed to a war zone)

8yrs of first aid, NBC (nuclear biological chemical) training - this is routine traing at least every other week.

I am qualified for air assault

I was taught how to inspect parachutes even though I wasn't airborne qualified.

I am qualified to repair and fire mk19, m60, 50cal, m60, M16 a1/a2, grenades, claymore mines.

Field sanitation qualified

Don't get me started on PT

I was part of 2 army reserve units.

Do I need to list more?

I may not be an expert but I could give a text book expert enough info to make them dangerous.

I got out because they wanted to send me to korea (just didn't want to leave the states) plus it was time for me to move on. The chemical training was necessary, what I hated was trying to fit that damn chemical suit over my BDUs (battle dress uniform or army fatigues) or getting in and out of those damn chemical boots.

if you're that cash strapped then you should just strip....only a complete fucking idiot would join the army now-a-days.

I'm not cash strapped like I said I'm just weighing my options. I know that my boys will be adults SOON and I'd rather know know what it is and how it is before they become adults. No I'm no fool. I know the benefits I receive from joining the service especially w/degree and I wanna play it for all its worth. I stopped coming on bgol for a while b/c someone asked if they had medical insurance and i let them know that I did have it (thanks to uncle sam) through medicaid. Being a single mother I have taken advantage of the things that are available: paid college tuition through pell grants, paid housing programs, medical coverage for me and my children, etc. I'm no less than corporations who accept handouts from the gov to start businesses, get out of bankruptcy, etc.

There are options out there and I'm going to use it to advance in my fullest potential. No this is not for the white man but the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People!

AND STRIPPING ISN'T AN OPTION

stripping is a better option than your kids having to identify mommies elbow .

STOP!!!
listening to all these civilians(non military) people tell you what they think YOU should go and do. The best thing you can do is go and visit a base. Have your recruiter,a friend on base or shit some random damn member walking around the mall show you around. Ask them about the educational benefits. Childcare..retirement...days...housing...im 23 and i just bought a 200k house as my 1st home. the military paying for it alllll, bills and all, with change left over.
Like every other fucking job it has its up's and downs. the more rank you have the better it gets. Its always fun at the top.

YES...I personally believe that all citizens legal or illegal should have to join for the minimum of 3 to 4 years. Of course the branch of your choicing.

It would partially fix our obesity problem within the US.

Good luck...try the Navy or Air Force for a easy life. Make sure you pick an OS that will give you a good career if you decide not to make it a 20 year venture.
