Trump Continues to Ignore MAGA Black Woman Running for Governor of Virginia
Nationwide — Trump did not mention Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears during a Navy anniversary speech, even as she runs as the Republican nominee for governor. Despite her past support, he hasn’t endorsed her as the election nears.
According to
CNN, during Sunday’s event celebrating the Navy’s 250th anniversary, Trump praised several Virginia Republicans with military backgrounds, including Reps. John McGuire, Rob Wittman, and Jen Kiggans. But he made no mention of Earle-Sears, a Marine veteran who has been actively campaigning in the same region.
Earle-Sears, the first Black woman elected statewide in Virginia, faces a tough race against Democrat Abigail Spanberger. Recent polls show her trailing by double digits, and some within the GOP worry about her campaign’s strength. Despite this, she continues to appeal to conservative voters and Trump loyalists, even without his endorsement.
Earlier that day, Trump posted on social media endorsing another Virginia Republican, Attorney General Jason Miyares, for reelection. He also criticized Spanberger for not doing enough to condemn past controversial remarks from a Democrat. However, he again left out any mention of Earle-Sears.
Earle-Sears once served as national chair of “Black Americans to Reelect Trump” in 2020 and traveled across the country to support his campaign. Their relationship cooled in 2022 after she publicly said Trump “shouldn’t run again.” Though the two met earlier this year at the White House, no endorsement came from that meeting.
Spanberger’s campaign has tried to tie Earle-Sears to Trump’s policies, blaming both for job losses and government cuts that affected Virginia’s large federal workforce. Spanberger’s team also accused Earle-Sears of defending Trump’s economic decisions at the expense of state jobs.
Earle-Sears has centered her campaign on transgender issues, criticizing Spanberger for avoiding questions about policies involving trans students. Still, a recent Washington Post-Schar School poll showed Spanberger leading 55 percent to 43 percent, boosted by strong support from independent voters.
