UFC 77 - Hostile Territory - Fighter Salaries

Every winning fighter earned a salary that was 50 percent to show and 50 percent as a win bonus. For example, Sylvia earned $200,000; $100,000 of that was his base salary, and the other $100,000 was earned as a win bonus. (Likewise, all of the night’s losing fighters would have doubled their salaries with a victory because of the win bonuses.)

Nice to see FORMER champion Rich Franklin making SUBSTANTIALLY LESS than current champ Anderson Silva.

Those are some big payouts for the likes of Sylvia + Vera as winner/loser. Good on them. Vera's still quite young too.

And come to think of it ... Stephan Bonnar's payout at $44,000 is pretty strong too, and he's done quite well for himself post-Ultimate Fighter season 1. That excellent Ultimate Fighter SEASON FINALE 3-round winner with Forrest Griffin. Them both earning fight contracts after their impressive showing ... some good wins in his short Octagon career (but a good record overall in mixed martial arts on the whole) ... and so on.

Stephan Bonnar's salary stood out most to me. Surprised to see him making so much money. I mean he's right up there with Rich Franklin who's a former title holder, who was actually fighting for the title again. I guess Dana meant what he said about Bonnar, and Griffin being the most important fight in UFC history, because he damn sure is paying him like it was.

That ULTIMATE FIGHTER season 1 finale was excellent. What a great way to close out that season with the live event. The show itself was a success ... brought alot of attention to mixed martial arts in North America ... considering it has had its ups and downs (the UFC) the past 15 years (1992/1993 ish to present). Both STEPHAN and FORREST put on an excellent showing. 15-minute war!! Or as Rogan's pointed out in his color commentary over the years with the sport ... a true "war of attrition" ... both trying to impose their will ... and both tough as all hell. Great battle, and it has really helped pave the way for future seasons (September 2007 = The Ultimate Fighter 6's commencement) and all the pay-per-views and so on. It also helps that SPIKE TV has been an excellent ambassador for the sport as well. They do a great job reairing their programming alot ... and all the other UFC content that gets to see light as well ... ALL ACCESS / ULTIMATE FIGHT NIGHT LIVE / UNLEASHED, and so on. And of course UFC WIRED (airs on the CW network), etc. You know White and the Fertita brothers are doing things big when Sports Illustrated notes the 2006 PPV numbers (in the area of $220 million, well above the WWE and boxing on HBO, etc). And when the live weigh-ins each months at various venues throughout North America (and overseas in Ireland/England) draw THOUSANDS of people ...

Actually, Silva signed a weak contract when he came in and I think he is in the last fight of it(IIRC it was a 5-fight deal, which he should be reupping and making more). Franklin also signed an even shittier contract for llong-term security right before his fight with Shamrock. Rather than risk signing a short-term contract and getting KTFO and not being able to be resigned, he signed a seven-fight deal with stable(at the time, remember the Shamrock/Franklin fight was the first UFN and the sport blew up from there) pay. He's still in that contract. Sylvia's deal was signed when he was champ so it seems big.

"MMA fighter Houston Alexander relishes run as UFC light-heavyweight

Houston Alexander's UFC account currently stands at two brutal knockouts in less than two minutes.

But his story outside the cage takes a little longer to tell. In addition to being a mixed martial arts fighter, the 35-year-old Alexander is a graffiti artist, former break dancer, hip-hop historian, radio DJ, and a single parent of six children who donated a kidney seven years ago to save one of his daughters.

There is much more to Alexander than heavy hands.

"I keep active man, I don't like staying stagnant for too long," Alexander explained.

The muscular, tattooed fighter known as The Assassin meets unbeaten Brazilian Thiago Silva on Saturday night at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J.

The six-foot, 205-pound Alexander has been fighting for seven years, entering mixed martial arts on a dare from a friend. He stepped into the ring against a bigger man who was winning a local event every week in Omaha.

"I didn't do too bad, so they asked me to come back and I came back every week and there you have it," said Alexander, who acknowledges he had always been a decent street fighter.

Today his pro record is listed at 8-1 but Alexander reckons he has fought some 200 unsanctioned fights, sometimes as many as five in one night. By his count, Alexander has won 95 per cent of all his bouts.

MMA was a hobby, a way to make some extra money. Then came the call from the UFC. Alexander was handed a difficult bout with Keith (The Dean of Mean) Jardine, who was coming off a shock TKO over Forrest Griffin.

Little was known about Alexander, although his build and glare both seemed major league as he waited for the bell to ring at UFC 71 in May. He wasted little time introducing himself to the MMA masses, however.

Alexander absorbed an early Jardine charge - he says a blow grazed him and he lost his balance on the slippery mat. He got up and got busy. A vicious uppercut sent Jardine to his knees and, as the punishment continued, the Dean of Mean crumpled face down to the canvas, his mouthpiece falling out on the way.

It was over in 48 shocking seconds. The UFC light-heavyweight division had yet another alpha dog ..."
