Folks are complaining because immigrants are about to be paid. They are essentially be paid for human rights abuses, you know the stuff that we tell other countries not to do. It doesn't matter if they think they deserve it, or shouldn't be entitled to make demands, or what President it happened under, even tho Trump made things 50x worse. You don't have to be a citizen to use our courts. Everyone is supposed to get due process. We have international laws we have agreed to and if they can prove their case, they will be awarded damages. They can cross anywhere as long as they present themselves to immigration and ask for asylum.
I'm not defending their actions, their being here, or saying they should be allowed to stay. Back when all this was happening, I stated I had no issue with someone being deported, but the mistreatment. The court document states what the law is, and how we violated it. There were women who had medical procedures like hysterectomy's who are also going to get paid. Everyone, especially black people, should be upset at the human rights abuses. We can't hold a moral high ground if we only take issue when abuses happen to black people. It it's wrong, it's wrong regardless.

Where did I say I was ok with it? I specifically said I wasn't defending their presence and have no opinion on whether or not they are deported. I'd rather not have folks streaming in here during a pandemic, anyway. However the US should have deported them, instead of keeping them for months in abusive situations to discourage others from following them. My only issue has been their mistreatment. I'm not jumping up and down happy someone is getting paid. I'm stating facts that they WILL be paid. The United States mistreated folks in their custody, and went out of our way to keep them in our custody, when international law, our own laws, and precedent said to do other wise and they can prove it.
We have to stand against injustice when it happens to others, otherwise why should we expect someone to stand up for our cause? (Brutality, racism, etc)

I've posted about the Haitian situation in the past, and have reminded folks in the past its not just Mexicans getting poor treatment. At the time I was told all immigrants need to hold their own nuts and given a lecture about how black folks can now get their jobs. I've only seen folks on here caring about Haitians since Biden has been in office. That said, I have no opinion as to whether anyone SHOULD get paid. If Haitians can prove their case in court (harder because folks are less sympathetic to black folks) they WILL get paid, but we all know racism plays a part and if they do get paid it will be less unless it's lumped into any settlement agreements being worked out now.
The ONLY thing I've said the entire time is that people should be treated humanely. We didn't do that, it can be proven in a court of law, and for the people this happened to under Trump there isn't an American alive who would sit on a jury who doesn't know the abuse was intentional because Trump told everyone what he was doing and why. There is no plausible deniability. It's public record. From what I see, the DOJ is attempting to settle rather than pay out even larger amounts. Do you have a different analysis of what is currently happening in court?
I'm am being a bit idealistic and I realize there is a bunch of dirty business that goes on the public is not aware of. Our legal system is a strained mess and black kids especially are often forced into plea deals because they can't afford a lawyer. They sit in jail awaiting trial for minor stuff because they can't afford bail. Black kids are made an example out of, white kids are seen as needing guidance. If they do make it to trial, racism enters into it and often they are wrongly convicted or over sentenced. Black kids go to jail for stuff a white kid with a lawyer would beat. That said, they do go to court, even if the process is not fair.
Immigrants can also go to court, and they have a bunch of willing lawyers working enthusiastically on their behalf, so they are going to get paid.
I agree about the mistreatment of juveniles and also adults. I'm not aware of any cases being filed on their behalf.
The 1/6 folks locked up in DC have been complaining about conditions they didn't give a damn about when it was black folks locked up. In the past they would have said it's jail so it's not supposed to be comfortable, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
Countries are often going to get away with treating their own people bad. We didn't just break our own laws tho, there were international laws related to asylum seekers that were violated also.
I'm against anyone being mistreated or abused. There are specific individuals who may deserve it, but I'm speaking in general. Kalief Browder committed suicide behind what he endured. I can be against his mistreatment and mistreatment of immigrants at the same time. What party is trying to get bail reforms done?
