U.S. Food Prices ‘Spiraling Out of Control’

U.S. food prices jumped by 2.4% in March 2010 in the largest monthly leap in more than 26 years, and the sixth consecutive monthly increase.

The National Inflation Association (NIA) issued an alert to its members April 22 warning that the sharp upswing in U.S. food inflation will soon lead to a situation as severe as that currently plaguing India.

Here are some of the most startling year-over-year price increases in the U.S. markets:

* Fresh and dry vegetables up 56.1%
* Fresh fruits and melons up 28.8%
* Eggs for fresh use up 33.6%
* Beef and veal up 10.7%
* Dairy products up 9.7%

In the alert, the nia reminded its members that it has long predicted food sector inflation, but admitted having “never anticipated that it would spiral so far out of control this quickly.”

The rising prices, alongside pandemic unemployment, have nudged tides of Americans onto the food stamp program. After the 14th consecutive monthly increase, 39.4 million Americans are now enrolled in the program. This figure is up 22.4% from one year ago, and the U.S. government is now paying out more to Americans in entitlement programs than it collects in taxes.

Many pundits are proclaiming that the U.S. recession is over and that inflation threats have been neutralized. But their hasty optimism does not factor in that 58% of February’s year-over-year increase in retail sales was not from improving consumer confidence, but from surging food and gasoline prices. The nia believes that price inflation is also accelerating in many economic sectors besides food and energy, and that any increases in 2010 U.S. retail sales will be the result of inflation.

Partly because the U-6 unemployment rate is on the verge of crossing the 17% mark, many retailers are reluctant to pass rising prices along to consumers. But if they wish to avoid reports of colossal losses to their shareholders, they will soon be forced to do just that.

Before this spike, inflation had not been a driving factor in the current economic downturn, and the Federal Reserve expected inflation to remain low throughout the year. But this unexpected jump in food prices and in other areas could quickly change that, especially when the increases are inevitably passed along to consumers and retail inflation starts to rise.

As shocking as it might be to a nation that has grown accustomed to abundance and convenience, mounting inflation and economic hardship will continue to feed each other, and eventually result in severe food shortages. The seeds of such a crisis have already been sown.

We have not seen nothing yet this is just starting, stock up on food, water and amo (get a gun if you dont have one yet) remember when the riots start happening in the USA (just like Greece) the government cant feed you and will not protect you at the end of the day you have to look out for you and your family.

So, is this your brand of conservative fanatiscism ?

I doubt there will be food riots. The government has too much to lose.

But, many have been projecting big jumps in food prices this summer.

Things are breaking down, but won't really get bad until you see gas nearing $4 a gallon.

Of course, the Federal goobermint will say they need more power to "solve" this problem. Either that, or they will try to find some scapegoat to start another "war" on something.

I hear ya. I got my rice and beans. Got the weapons covered too. The only thing I need is a dehydrator for the veggies and a good airtight container for them.

What pisses me off the most is that you have to KNOW your prices and also be good with coupons and coupon-stacking to even have a fighting chance at getting ahead. I always try and save 10 - 20% on my total grocery bill through savings, and pick up any clearance or reduced-price items AS WELL to save at the damn cash register ... but shit's hard when they FUCK AROUND with their regular prices (on NON-sale items) all the time.

Riddle me this ...

- Why in the fuck to the following types of items jump all over the map so much?

- 907g bag of healthy flax cereal = $4.99 at SUPERSTORE / $10.99 at Safeway

- Centrum multivitamins = $9.99 - 12.99 at Superstore and Walmart / $17.00 at Save-On Foods. I use 2 coupons when I buy them at $9.99 to save $3 and $2 and get them for $5, but still. WTF?

- 5lb bag of carrots = $1.66 - 3.99

- Triscuit crackers = $1.66 - 3.00

- Healthy PC brand of 'Just Peanuts' peanut butter = $2.29 - $5.00. Again ... REGULAR, NON-SALE PRICING! WTF?

- Milk ... $3.77 - $4.39 - 4L jug

- President's Choice 2.27kg vegetarian lasagna - $9.99 - 15.99 ...

- The list goes on and on ... just some bullshit I've noticed in Canada as well ^

I live in NYC but I don't pay anywhere near those prices. I probably never will since I don't shop in traditional spots for vegetables, fruits, dairy and meats.

I use Farmer's Market, local slaughter houses and milk plants.

Tuscan Milk - $1.99 a gallon

Apples, pears, oranges and peaches - 6 for $1.00

Whole chicken roughly 7 to 8 lbs - $6.99 etc.

When I do hit a local grocery store the managers there give me a an evil eye because I always leave with a lot of food and rarely pay much.

I use a system of coupons, reward programs, in-store double coupon deals and manufacture rebates.

If you do a search on BGOL - main forum - I broke it down by website and services but it only takes me 30 minutes a week set it all up and I purchase $200 every week and only pay $30 to $40 tops.

I make sure I have 6 months of supplies at all times in goods so usually my shopping is light but I also host a lot of dinners and what not so I buy a lot.

Food-stamp tally nears 40 million, sets record

(Reuters) - Nearly 40 million Americans received food stamps -- the latest in an ever-higher string of record enrollment that dates from December 2008 and the U.S. recession, according to a government update.

U.S.

Food stamps are the primary federal anti-hunger program, helping poor people buy food. Enrollment is highest during times of economic distress. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent, the government said on Friday.

The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday.

"This is the highest share of the U.S. population on SNAP/food stamps," said the anti-hunger group Food Research and Action Center, using the new name for food stamps, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Research suggests that one in three eligible people are not receiving ... benefits."

Enrollment has set a record each month since reaching 31.78 million in December 2008. USDA estimates enrollment will average 40.5 million people this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30, at a cost of up to $59 billion. For fiscal 2011, average enrollment is forecast for 43.3 million people.

Yes - I was just listing price jumps that I spot. I don't buy the shit ... and I work in health care (residential mental health) so I eat about 60% of my intake at work anyway free of charge. When I do hit the grocery store once every 10 days or so ... I make sure to use the in-store programs / credit card program (for points) / coupons / double-stacking / 5-finger discounting (just kidding) ... etc, etc, etc.

A Rendezvous With Destiny

President Roosevelt:

...Since that struggle, however, man's inventive genius released new forces in our land which reordered the lives of our people. The age of machinery, of railroads; of steam and electricity; the telegraph and the radio; mass production, mass distribution - all of these combined to bring forward a new civilization and with it a new problem for those who sought to remain free.

For out of this modern civilization economic royalists carved new dynasties. New kingdoms were built upon concentration of control over material things. Through new uses of corporations, banks and securities, new machinery of industry and agriculture, of labor and capital - all undreamed of by the Fathers - the whole structure of modern life was impressed into this royal service.

There was no place among this royalty for our many thousands of small-businessmen and merchants who sought to make a worthy use of the American system of initiative and profit. They were no more free than the worker or the farmer. Even honest and progressive-minded men of wealth, aware of their obligation to their generation, could never know just where they fitted into this dynastic scheme of things....
