... So R U genetically modified?

:dunno:

You may have heard the FDA and food industry claims that genetically modified (GM) foods are safe, properly tested, and necessary to feed a hungry world. UNTRUE! Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are one of the most dangerous and radical changes to our food supply. These largely unregulated ingredients found in 60-70% of the foods in the US, are well worth the effort to avoid them...

...The FDA has claimed it was not aware of any information showing that GM crops were different “in any meaningful or uniform way,” from non-GMO crops and therefore didn’t require testing. But 44,000 internal FDA documents made public by a lawsuit show that this was a complete lie. The overwhelming consensus among the FDA’s own scientists was that GM foods were quite different and could lead to unpredictable and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. It turns out that FDA scientists, who had urged superiors to require long-term studies, were ignored...

Some of the Ingredients That May Be Genetically Modified:

Vegetable oil, vegetable fat and margarines (made with soy, corn, cottonseed, and/or canola)

I'm trying to step my awareness game up, join me...

Stepping up your awareness is a start but what are the alternatives? Do any alternatives exist? Most people I know have little time nor the knowledge to grow their own foods or to raise and kill their own meats. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the food manufacturers.

Think about it the meats are injected with growth hormones, we eat the meat, those hormones are now part of our food chain. Same with fruits and vegetables. An yes that also applies to you vegans too. Because if your not growing your own foods you too have already been modified. Think not how many here are the same size they were 10 years ago? Have your eating habits changed much during that time?

So you say buy organic? Do we really know what is truly organic? We don't! Who or what agency is regulating organic foods? If your buying organic you may be wasting your money.

With the growth hormones injected into the meats we eat and into the soils where our fruits and vegetables grow we have all been "genetically modified."

You're right. Most, if not all of us are subject to this dilemma. Growing your own veggies I guess would be a good start (for those that can).

But basically it comes down to this: Where there's a will, there's a way...

... But there can't be a will or a way if one is not aware... So for those that didn't know, I put it on front street.

Yes, it might require a change in lifestyle or food selection. Not everyone will do it, but maybe some will.

There is a pdf at the bottom of the first post. That might be a good start as well...

Not questioning your motive its a good thread. It will be interesting to see the views of the SOLers. Maybe some will present some ideas that all can benefit from. Alternatives are needed there's no doubt about it.

Thanks, I'm glad you see me...

Two products I'm considering in addition to a garden:

1) Aero-Garden

2) survivalistseeds.com/

I plan to take the "printed" PDF file with me the next time I go grocery shopping. I really haven't posted some of the horrors caused by GMO foods yet.

Like Mo-Better, I'm really interested in any input others can give regarding this subject...

Fix that second link.

Looking at that 1st link those pots look interesting. Perfect for someone with a limited area however they are too expensive. At $150 a pop ( a few lower) for a standard setup those are going to be some very costly veggies. It will take several years to break even on your operation cost.

Good luck with them.

Let me tell you how southern my parents are. It hasn't been that long now that I think about it. My parents moved me and my sister to the burbs in the early 80's. We kept a garden into the early 90's. The only time I can remember either of us beign bed ridden was maybe the flu twice and chicken pox.

We grew a garden IN the sub-division. I had to go out and pick squach, peppers, cucumbers, yams, butter beans, tomatoes, and peas. The mid nineties was fairly modern and we were able to keep a garden. It is still possible but you have GOT to tend that mofo or it will get away from you.

This is a good thread. I am really, really trying to step my organic/holistic game up because I have questioned food companies since I was in elementary and in an interesting way.

I really love to read. So, my mom, as much of a hard azz as she was, would let me run through the grocery store and read labels. I just kept noticing the words getting harder to read as I was gettin better at reading and the lists were getting longer. It was the transition from just enough to preserve to subbing in chemicals for smell and flavor.

I been trying to grow a garden ever since but it is just so convenient to go to the market.

I do try to buy organic wherever possible. I buy a lot of things from stores like Trader Joes.. organic fruit sections of supermarkets.. cage free organic eggs, etc..

But some things get me.. like buying organic or even Kosher meat is much more expensive and I can't keep up with those.. If I had a home with a yard, I'd definitely grow my own veggies, like my grandmother used to do..

Cleo I've looked at the prices on organic fruits, eggs and meats and the cost difference is substantial. Growing your own can be the way to go. In fact I expect we're going to see more people electing to take that path.

BTW interesting link to Newark, I lived there for 20 years prior to moving here.

The good thing about living in New Jersey is you dont have to buy your fruit and produce from the stores. To save money you should always look for locally grown things.

great post homie..

first we have to get off this western diet, and yes I said WE I am tryin to ween my ass off as well

the thing I do is, I am slowly getting into grains instead of white or brown rice..

grains like quinoa and kamut berries, which is NOT a berry but actually a rice like grain...

unlike rice these grains have nutrients, and minerals that have NOT been stripped down like white rice, which is pure starch and why some folks work out but cant rid themselves of that gut... its the breads, pastas, rice the starch, that shit will keep a belly on a ninja..

anyway, those grains are not gmo yet... and they are what we used to eat back in what is known as africa.

we got to research and get back to that... this bullshit over here is giving us heart diseaase and all types of ailments...

and genectally modified food, is just plain ol fashoined demonic!!

why the fuck would you want to make a pig gene a fruit...??

just demonically retarded!!

I also try to incorporate freshyly extracted juice at least three times a week in my diet.. man I look and feel ten years younger..

I usually juice a bag of apples, piece of ginger, lime, celery, and a cucumber...

and drink before I go work out...

when I sweat my skin glows, and the bitchs in the gym be googly eyein a bro all day... till I get cool down get dry and look like ashy larry.

It is definitely a noticeable increase in my grocery bill.. but its one of those things that I'm willing to invest in as best as I can.

yeah.. working with that site is helping me get to know my new area & an opportunity for people to voice their opinions if they want to. I enjoy it. Hope you continue to check it out!

best thing to do is to move to another country. All this hormone business isn't rampant in other countries as much. Hormones do cost money. I wish there was an easier way around it but in America iam afraid we all are trapped into eating these foods. I went to checkers for some wings and noticed that a little leg had soo much meat on it made me stop and think about what I was eating.
