So they were past their prejudices say 10 years earlier than that. I am not saying that they were not persecuted and insulted for their choices but we should have made more progress than we have because racism is not a one way street.

In fact I have seen more racism/prejudice from black people towards other black people than I have from Whites to Black or Whites to White, other than English to Germans, French, Italians but that is because of World War 1 and World War 2.
