Kings of Jo'Burg
2020

5.5/10

This is a supernatural series from South Africa that popped up on my recommendations last year.

I sat on it waiting to get confirmation of it being renewed for a season 2 which they did. And it looks like a season 3 will debut next year.

As we know, Netflix has become notorious for cancelling series. So with me going forward, I am not getting into anything until I know follow up series have been announced.

There are 2 seasons and I completed season 1 last night. Season 1 is a slow burn season mainly dealing with primary character introduction/development. If you suffer from TV ADHD, don’t waste your time getting into it.

The supernatural part is barely touched upon and not given any definitive explanation until the season finale. The first 5 episodes it is only brought up for a few minutes each episode. That is my main peeve so far with the series, but it looks like it will get more into the supernatural in season 2 from what I saw in the season finale.

For the Thirsty, there are a few pieces of eye candy, but nothing is shown but a few shots of their fully clothed bodies. There is some nudity, but it is not with the female characters you want to see.

Overall, the series plays out like an extended American “Hood” movie. So the main plot is nothing new and very predictable. If you enjoy American Hood films, you will enjoy this series.

I plan on getting season 2 completed within the next month or so.

The series again is from South Africa. English is spoken primarily thru the series, but the characters do flip back and forth from their native tongue to English thru-out, that is when sub- titles is used.

Season 1 has 6 episodes that run about 45 minutes each.

When looking into the series, it is a highly viewed and popular series in South Africa. A number of actors are award winners from Africa stage/film/tv series guilds.

I also found out that the main actor who plays “Simon” passed away after season 1 debuted, his spouse has taken over production.

Synopsis

The Masire brothers rule Johannesburg's criminal underworld, but a supernatural family curse threatens to destroy them.

Kings of Jo’Burg
Season 2

I started watching this season last week on the road and finished it up this afternoon.

There are 8 episodes this season.

Mo’s sister is introduced to fill in the void of the lead actor who passed away. Her character plays out well.

The season has a few unexpected twists with some of the characters.

A new black female villain is introduced. And she is pretty ruthless and devious.

More information and backstory is given on the Entity this season that answers some questions.

Season 3 looks to be setup for more supernatural stuff than what has been presented so far. It should make this series more interesting.

Season 3 has been approved and will be the final season. It’s scheduled at this time to debut on American Netflix the end of 2024. South Africa is not affected by the Hollyweird strikes, so no issues should keep it from debuting.

For the season 3 finale, when you get to the end, keep watching until the credits roll. There are two extra scenes.

Season 3
7 Episodes

6.5/10

I started and finished the new season that recently debuted back in June this afternoon at home on Netflix.

It picked up some time after the events that ended in season 2.

This season introduced a new bad guy and an explanation is finally given with the supernatural sub-plot introduced in the prior seasons. VFX/SFX of the supernatural entities is the same as what was used in the Arrowverse series.

Malik Yoba makes a surprise debut this season in a supporting role.

All plot lines for the past 3 seasons were closed up. There is no word at this time for a season 4, but there were two incidents that happened towards the end of season 3 which could start up new plots to continue the series. As of now, if no more seasons happen you can watch season 3 as “The Final Season”.

I can’t go too much into what happens in the series, but if you are interested in watching it, the first season is a full slow burn with character introduction/development along with it being a slow burn with plot development. The second season kicks it up somewhat with some action/suspense. Season 3 kicks it in full gear with suspense and action.

For the Thirsty, no nudity, but the series is full of good looking African BW built like brickhouses. Their outfits highlight their bodies and good camera angles/views fully display them.
