It has interesting how so many do NOT like the time jumps

I feel like it has become a very common storytelling device for years now...

I mean damn...since Roshamon

popularized I guess probably by Tarantino in Pulp Fiction and Later LOST

and yeah it can be used poorly and too much but I felt in this SPECIFIC show Black Summer used it well ( a LITTLE much and unnecessarily) for the most part

And its become it signature

I do like when shows try to be different.

Agreed. I enjoy it now too. Plus a show like Black Summer keeps you on your toes given the drastic stakes of life and death. Plus, the shorter running times and episode counts. Seems like the eps this season are a bit longer than last season, which is a good thing.

^^^

glad you mentioned that

I would love to sit in on writers meetings because production and Netflix exec may have found a sweet spot for these types of shows

the episodes are perfect length and this is a good season number of episodes

I hope other shows emulate this.

I might be REALLY late but have you noticed if you use Netflix on your phone that you can change the SPEED of episodes?

I just discovered this.

I don't like it so far, but in a FEW instances?

I noticed it helped a LOT

I didn't even NOTICE it

didn't distort dialogue or music majorly and it saved me time.

I didn't know that. Then again, I don't use my phone for viewing...either TV or desktop with a 24in monitor.

We are really enjoying all these shorter and limited series from anywhere from 5 - 12 eps. Series are much less watered down than old network shows of 16-24 eps. Plus we can actually see more shows overall over the course of time.

Thanks for the intel re: playback speed. Didn’t know that, but also we don’t have Netflix. Funny side note - been listening to a shitload of podcasts the past 10 years. Always at 1.5 to 2x playback speed. Too many shows which are way too long or have slow talker hosts, haha. Always have anywhere from 5-15 pods lined up for the playback rotation. So many damn good podcasts, it’s crazy.

no

i refuse to watch till all episodes are available

Exactly, this was an Executive decision that they have marketed the hell out of to make seem like it came from the viewing audience. People still want to binge watch, it's just that a lot of these new streaming services only invested in a handful of original series and they can't have people going through their new content during their 1 week trial period. It forces the user to stay subscribed longer by going week to week and the streamers also enlist a network of media critics to flood the Internet with Spoilers to make it hard for people trying to wait until all the episodes are up before they binge. TV Guide is notorious for that shit, I remember a new season of OITNB dropped a midnight on a Friday and by 2pm they already had articles posted spoiling a major character's death (and this was during the binge era).

Anyone plan on checking out this series? Interesting premise and the way it's shot ...

Kevin Can F**k Himself is an American dark comedy television series created by Valerie Armstrong, who also serves as an executive producer. It follows Allison McRoberts, a sitcom wife played by Annie Murphy, who escapes her confines and becomes the lead of her own life, using a format which blends both the multiple-camera setup typical of many mainstream American sitcoms when Allison is with her husband Kevin, and the single-camera setup more common to contemporary television when she is away from him.[1]

It premiered on AMC+ on June 13, 2021, and will debut on AMC on June 20, 2021.[2]

Mr Inbetween is a great show on FX or Hulu i hope the series which is sadly ending doesnt end the way i think it will.
Im shocked Scott Ryan hasnt been in a lot of films and TV shows.

Definitely gonna check this one out, JBlaze. Thanks for the reminder & recommendation.

Mr Inbetween is an Australian black comedy-crime drama television series which premiered on FX on 25 September 2018 in the United States,[1] followed by Fox Showcase in Australia on 1 October 2018.[2] The series is a serialization of the 2005 feature film The Magician, which was created, written by and starred Scott Ryan.[3] Ryan reprises his lead role and is also the writer for the series.[1]
The program was originally commissioned for FX Australia as its first original drama production,[4] but launched in Australia on Showcase following the closure of FX Australia between commission and premiere.[2]
On 9 October 2018, FX and Foxtel renewed the series for a second season which premiered on 12 September 2019.[5][6] On 26 May 2020, the series was renewed for a third and final season which premiered on 25 May 2021.[7][8]

Ray Shoesmith is a hitman for hire who makes a life out of balancing his criminal activities with his obligations to friends and family. He tries to be a father to Brittany (Chika Yasumura), his daughter with his ex-wife, Jacinta (Natalie Tran), a loving boyfriend to Ally (Brooke Satchwell), and a good caretaker to his sick brother Bruce (Nicholas Cassim). Ray also covers for his friend Gary (Justin Rosniak) when needed, and follows his boss Freddy's (Damon Herriman) orders without question. Ray deals with criminals and monsters in his own violent way; this behavior, however, starts to take its toll and affects his relationships.

I watched the pilot episode this afternoon.

It is a interesting series. It is a Dark Comedy that somewhat has a Sci-Fi/ Thriller feel to it.

I will say before going forward, if you are a In-Cell, Woman hating cat, don't bother reading further and do not bother watching the series.

What makes the series interesting is that it is two series in one. One part is filmed like a standard TV Sitcom that is brightly lit that you will see on the major networks. It is filmed like "Home Improvement" and "King From Queens" and other sitcoms like it. The other part is filmed on film and is much darker when viewed similar to dramas like "Sons Of Anarchy" and "Justified".

Those standard TV sitcoms that you are familiar with over the past 40 years, they were male dominated series. The Husband went thru the episodes as a bumbling goof saying stupid shit and there will be the laugh track after his jokes which usually were corny. The husband would always forget their wedding anniversary, the wife's birthday or some special occasion or event earlier in their life. The Wife was always the butt of his jokes. And the husband's relatives, friends and co-workers would joke on the wife at her expense with the standard laugh track.

And that is basically how the series starts and plays out. When you watch, the scenes with the wife, husband, relatives and friends is in sitcom format. When the wife steps out of the room, it changes to the other format and you will see how she is upset with her marriage and life with her dumbass husband. It goes back and forth thru the episode.

The series is from the wife's point of view, not the husband's.

What is not explained at this point is what is the real life and what is the fake life. The pilot episode did have one scene when one relative was seen in the dark version. And there was another scene with the husband/relatives in the dark version (I won't spoil what happens but it's a dark, graphic scene). Both were quick scenes so it was hard to determine what was going on in relation to the sitcom part.

It's also not clear if the wife is going thru severe depression, suicidal or having a mental breakdown. It's also not clear if any of what we are seeing is real or fantasy or what.

Like any series, I suspect clues were in the first episode, but I most likely did not pick them up. I will re-watch the pilot later and then make a decision to watch future episodes.

And this does not seem to be a series to watch weekly. It comes off more as a binge series. So I might have the episodes stack up before I re-watch in the near future.

The series is Executive Produced by Rashida Jones

it's more of a cop show like Criminal Minds or CSI than Silence Of The Lambs.

Out of 10 I'd give it a 4
Yeah it's lacking the punch of the Silence of the Lambs. The problem is that, due to contractual obligations, they can't mention Hannibal Lector, so they dance around his character. It's supposedly moving to Paramount if it gets renewed. I'm done after this season.

Ah, so you have to be an incel, woman-hating cat to not be interested in a typical, woman married a bad choice but not held accountable or responsible but instead is played as a victim while a show pushes feminist undertones and simultaneously plays the all men are a monolyth and that monolyth is stupid card? Got it.

Thanks for the summary.
The combination of genres and filming styles looks like a fresh idea.

But people posting on social media about how mind blowing or shocking this episode was are hilarious. Especially those click bait screen caps on YouTube :

I love when a show goes completely off the path I thought it was going to go down
The cast is excellent and the story is very involving.

This series debuted earlier this year. It was one of Netflix's experiment of releasing the episodes weekly instead of at once.

I waited until all the episodes were up before I started watching it. I watched the first two episodes this evening.

The series is interesting from what I have seen. The main plot is mainly explained in the first 5 minutes of the first episode. From there in the first episode it is heavy on character introduction and development and it proceeds slowly. The last 5 minutes of the first episode might keep you interested in following the series if you are into series like this.

I highly recommend those who suffer from TV ADHD not to bother watching the series. It is a very serious, slow burn. It is Sci-Fi, but there are no SFX, no explosions and fancy technology being shown. The premise has been done in other series, this is somewhat done differently. This isn't a binge type series and I, myself don't expect I will finish it until the end of summer.

There are 13 episodes in season one that run around 50 minutes each. The series is from Spain and Netflix has it dubbed in English. Sub-titles are used for signage.

It has been renewed for a 2nd season that is filming right now and scheduled to be released early 2022.

Synopsis

In 2045 Spain is part of dictatorial regime where a fence separates the privileged from the rest of the population.

We finished The Serpent. Definitely one of the best limited series we've seen over the years. As well as the 2nd half of season 1 of Lupin.

Started the first few episodes of season 1 of Mr. Inbetween per @joneblaze 's recent recommendation. Enjoyed it. Hoping to get caught up quickly with it as episodes are short. The balance between the violence of the job, and the family life is interesting. The dark humor is reminiscent of the series Barry (on HBO).

Still need to wrap up The Kings docuseries, and seasons 2 and 3 of Goliath. Probably going to do those after we've checked out season 2 of Black Summer.

Then later in the year we'll do Gangs of London (season 1) and Sneaky Pete (series - recommended by coworker). Also, the 2nd season of Ted Lasso in late-July.

I've heard good things about Dave. Caught a few episodes from the 1st season.

Liked Ted Lasso too. It was refreshing to have a comedy with the lead who was optimistic and positive. We're so used to sour and sarcastic comedy. Fun to have that counterbalanced with some of the other cast on the show.

Warrior ... sounds great. Have always heard good things!

Gangs of London ... really looking forward to watching it in full.
