Fans have been wondering for years just how long they’ll get to watch Sam and Dean save people and hunt things on their television screens. And on March 22, they got an answer when Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins posted a video revealing that season 15 — which will air in the 2019-2020 television season — will be the show’s last.

Following the announcement, a number of #SPNFamily members shared their reactions, including Collins writing a heartfelt letter to the fandom. And on Sunday, Ackles and Padalecki took the stage at a Supernatural convention in Las Vegas, where they addressed the decision. “This was a community decision,” Padalecki said, pointing out that neither the network nor the studio asked them to end things.

Ackles followed that up by saying: “It wasn’t an easy decision. It was months and months, if not years, of discussion between he and I, between the rest of the cast, between the crew, between our writers, between our producers, between the studio, between the network. Nobody wanted to see this show fizzle out. I think that it was everyone wanting to do the biggest service to the show that we could by going out strong. It just seemed like the writing was kind of on the wall as to when that was happening. Everybody kind of felt that it was coming soon, and so it was just taking that leap of faith of going like, ‘Well guys, let’s get out the paint and paint that finish line because what we’ve accomplished is unlike any other.'”

Supernatural has revealed Mary Winchester's fate following last week's dramatic cliffhanger which saw Jack lose control and seemingly kill Dean and Sam's mother, played by Samantha Smith.

But the cliffhanger cut to black before confirming what happened, so is it possible that Mary survived?

Unfortunately, this week's episode – titled 'Absence' – confirmed that Mary Winchester is definitely dead.

After his part in her death, Jack (Alexander Calvert) approaches Rowena (Ruth Connell), hoping that she would be able to help in reversing what he did and resurrect Mary. But the spell doesn't work as intended, as only Mary's body is summoned.

Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) are devastated by their mother's passing and give her a hunter's funeral. The one consolation is that according to Duma (Erica Cerra), Mary is in heaven.

"She is at peace," she tells Castiel (Misha Collins). "She died painlessly, instantly, completely. She’s in heaven, a special heaven. Mary Winchester is complete. You and the Winchesters may not be – but she is."

Emotional flashbacks of Mary with the surviving characters are also scattered throughout the episode.

Smith, who first appeared in the 2005 pilot and has featured in nearly 40 episodes, marked her departure from the show with a touching message on Twitter.

"Living in Mary Winchester has been the adventure of a lifetime," she said. "I've loved every second with every fiber of my being, and adore every person I had the honour to stand alongside more than they'll ever know.

"Thank you for the privilege to have been, and hopefully to remain, a member of the #SPNFamily, a gift in itself beyond measure.

"And can I say, what a sendoff?! Just... thank you."

Of course, perhaps this won't be the last we'll see of Mary.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan did return as John Winchester earlier this season, and with season 15 confirmed as being the show's last, we wouldn't bet against Dean and Sam's parents showing up one more time before the end.

Supernatural recap: Saying goodbye to
By Samantha Highfill

“Mary Winchester is complete.”

When Supernatural first started, Mary Winchester was the perfect mother whose untimely death steered John Winchester down a very specific, very dark path. As the show went on, we’d learn more about Mary: how she was the hunter in the family and how her death wasn’t random but rather an aftereffect of a decision she’d made years earlier. Because, like a true Winchester, she’d done everything possible to save her family.

It wasn’t until the end of season 11, when Amara decided to give Dean the thing he needed most, that Mary returned to the show in a major way. And with her return came new facets to the character. She wasn’t perfect. But she cared about helping others. And she loved her boys. And tonight, we said goodbye to Mary Winchester with an episode all about the woman who kicked off this journey and the mark she made.

We start at the bunker, where Sam and Dean grow suspicious when they realize that Jack and Mary are nowhere to be found. Mary’s cell phone is still here, and according to Castiel, Jack isn’t well. Cas finally tells them about Jack killing his pet snake, so Sam attempts to track his cell. But Jack is jumping from country to country. Why? Because he’s looking for help. And he finds it in the form of his subconscious, who looks an awful lot like Nick/Lucifer. As Jack remembers better moments with Mary, Lucy tells him, “You killed Mary Winchester. You cannot come back from that.” Jack swears it was an accident, but he knows it doesn’t matter. And that’s why he’s panicking.

In the Impala, the boys are trying to have positive attitudes about Jack. They’re headed to the cabin where Nick attempted to bring back Lucifer, but when they get there, Sam finds Nick’s body. (So I guess he is dead?) And Dean… well, he finds what he calls an angel blast site. Cas, pulling up to the cabin, remembers a touching conversation he had with Mary soon after she returned to the land of the living. “Sam and Dean, they’re glad to have you back,” Castiel told her. “Finally they don’t have to be so alone.” Mary, still getting used to the idea of trusting an angel, told Castiel, “They were never alone.”

In present day, Cas enters the cabin, where Dean is desperately trying to hold out hope that Jack isn’t behind this. But if he is, Dean won’t be happy. “If he did something to her,” Dean tells Castiel. “Then you’re dead to me.” Dean is furious that Cas didn’t tell them about Jack, and Cas tries to explain that he was scared. After believing in Jack for so long, he saw him kill his snake, but what he saw wasn’t evil. It wasn’t bad. It was an absence of good. And Cas didn’t want to lose the family they’d built. But Dean’s still not having it. Not until they find Mary.

But about Mary… Rowena calls Sam. She’s been trying a couple of tracking spells but she can’t find Jack because his energy is too unstable. As for Mary, she doesn’t know what happened or where she is, but she can say for sure that “Mary Winchester is no longer on this earth.”

Dean takes a moment to get out his anger — R.I.P. to the poor wooden chair in his path — before he makes a plan: They’re heading to Rowena and the Book of the Damned, and they’re finding a way to bring Mom back. As for Cas, he’s going to heaven to find Mary.

Only, when there’s a knock on Rowena’s door, it’s Jack. He had the same idea: He wants Rowena to help him bring her back. But when she stalls him to allow Sam and Dean time to arrive, he zaps them both back to the bunker and forces her to prepare the spell.

Jack then flashes to a memory with Mary. She’s helping him train, trying to show him how to handle a knife. But when Sam enters, it becomes his memory. We’re in the weeks after Michael possessed Dean, and Sam feels guilty for spending all of his time looking for his brother. Mary recognizes it instantly, the look of parental guilt. She knows it well, and she tells Sam that, as a parent, you always feel like you’re failing, but then you look up and realize your kids are the bravest, kindest, most heroic men on the planet. (Well, that doesn’t really go for everyone but it certainly goes for Mary.)

We then cut to Sam, who’s talking Dean down. Dean wants to blame all of this on Cas, but Sam reminds him that they’ve always known Jack was dangerous. He is the son of Lucifer after all! But he had a good soul… until he didn’t. This is on Sam as much as it’s on Cas. And it’s even on Dean, something the older Winchester brother finally admits. Donatello tried to warn Dean about Jack but he didn’t see it. And now, Jack is dangerous.

While Jack takes Rowena back to the spot where Mary died, Castiel waits at the sandbox to heaven for Naomi to answer him. Instead, Duma shows up and tells him that Mary is at peace. Apparently, she died painlessly, instantly, and completely. She’s in a special heaven now. “Mary Winchester is complete,” Duma says, a sentence I love with my whole heart.

But Jack doesn’t know that. And when Rowena refuses to do the spell — she can’t do it without — Jack throws her back to her apartment, at which point she calls Sam and Dean and warns them that Jack could bring back something terrible if he does the spell himself. He does, but all he brings back is a shell of Mary. It’s her body, but it’s nothing more. And it gives Sam and Dean a chance to say goodbye as Dean remembers a time when Mary fell asleep on his shoulder during a long drive in Baby. It’s the simple moments that matter most to him.

Back at the bunker, Cas tells Sam and Dean that he visited Mary’s heaven. She’s happy. She’s with John in a place where there’s no sorrow and no guilt. There’s just joy. With that, the boys throw her a hunter’s funeral — where Sam stops Cas from trying to talk to Dean — and we cut to a final shot of the table in the bunker library. Next to Sam and Dean’s initials are Mary’s, an carved into the wood.
Because she made her mark. In more ways than one.

Supernatural isn’t over yet, but the people behind the show are already crafting the ending.

On Sunday, the cast and producers took the stage at the 2019 Television Critics Association press tour, where they were asked about their vision for the ending back when the show first started. Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean, referenced creator Eric Kripke’s original five-year plan, saying, “I don’t think that that ending would make sense anymore.” As for the ending they have come to now, Ackles said, “I want it to end in a way that does justice to what we’ve built for the past 14½ years. The game plan that we have is going to do just that.”

Ackles noted that while they’re probably not going to please everybody with the ending, he said for the majority of fans, “This is certainly going to feel right and it’s going to feel good. It should put a lot of people in a position to feel great about the journey they took with the Winchester brothers.”

Additionally, when discussing the show’s ending, Ackles said, “It’s a long journey that I don’t think is ever going to be over. I think we’re just going to go away for a while. How long? I don’t know.” And when asked if he’d be open to returning to the Supernatural universe in the future, Ackles said, “I’m not ever going to close doors or burn bridges; I think that’s foolish. Am I saying that there’s something in the works? No. Am I saying I’d be open to having a conversation about this in the future? What’s the harm in that?”

As for why the show is ending now, Jared Padalecki chimed in to say, “You don’t want to be the last person at the party, even if it’s the best party on the planet.”

How Supernatural’s Trickster Went From Gabriel to Loki (and Back)

In Supernatural's earlier seasons, Sam and Dean's paranormal hunting trips were sometimes interrupted by devious magical pranks. The high jinks began in Season 2's "Tall Tales," in which the brothers investigate a series of murders that smack of irony -- a serial animal abuser mauled by alligators -- and improbability -- a mean frat house kid killed by an extraterrestrial abduction.

Bobby, their resident lore expert come stand-in father figure, reckons the culprit is a Trickster, a reality-warping demigod that needs little further explanation. Except that, this Trickster really did need a lot more explanation. As is the hallmark of the archetype, there's an awful lot more to Supernatural's mystical swindler than meets the eye. And, over the course of several seasons, the character wound up becoming one of the show's most endearingly fascinating figures.

Back in Season 2, what could have been just another satisfying detour from the show's overarching plot ends on a lingeringly intriguing note. Satisfied that the suggested stake through the heart seemed to have done the trick, Sam and Dean depart the scene, leaving only us, the audience, to witness the Trickster's slain body disappear while the real one manifests nearby, ready to trick another day.

He was far from done with the boys, however, and each of his subsequent cameos in their lives became more elaborately twisted. Season 3's "Mystery Spot," a series highlight to this day, trapped the Winchesters in a Groundhog Day scenario with none of the charm or romantic payoff of the Bill Murray/Andie MacDowell classic. Instead, Sam is forced to watch his older brother die over and over again in ways that range from the everyday -- a car accident -- to the Looney Tunes-esque -- a falling piano. Each death results in time being reset to the beginning of the day.

Recognizing his hallmarks, Sam eventually catches the Trickster and demands he break the cycle. While the antagonist agrees, Sam's threat to off him in revenge forces the Trickster to get serious: killing Dean off for good and leaving a mourning Sam to live for months alone -- the cruelest joke of all.

When the Trickster pops up again to put the hunter out of his misery, he reveals the method to his madness was to break the brothers' troubling co-dependence. Sam didn't heed his lesson, but we sure learned something significant: there was a beating heart behind the demigod's devilish smile.

If the reality-bending fun of "Mystery Spot" wasn't enough, Season 5's "Changing Channels" really put the Winchesters through the metaphysical wringer. Shortly after they figure out that a quick-tempered man in Ohio probably wasn't beaten to death by the real Incredible Hulk, Sam and Dean are whisked into the fictional worlds of various television shows, from Dr. Sexy MD to a high-risk game show to a medical commercial that forces a frustrated Sam to proudly tell the viewers at home that he has genital herpes.

By this point, the brothers are working under the assumption that the Trickster's substantial power level identifies him as Loki, one of the world's best-known mischief-makers. However, Castiel, who tries to rescue the boys, is convinced the supposed Norse god is even more powerful than he's letting on.

With the use of an angel trap, Sam and Dean finally lay all doubt to rest. "Loki" is exposed as the Archangel Gabriel, which the Winchesters deduced by watching him easily fend off Castiel's advances and by the emotionally charged way he talked about his brothers, Lucifer and Michael, whose constant bickering led to the youngest Archangel running away from home and making a new one on Earth.

This is the first point of connection made between the Winchester family's dysfunction and God's, a humanizing quality for the higher beings that, as we later learn, also defines Lucifer's tumultuous relationship with the Father of Creation. Unlike Castiel's stilted mannerisms -- typical of most Angels fresh to the world of humans -- Gabriel, taking on Loki's face and character as "witness protection," has been living among his father's favored children for hundreds of years. And, as evidenced by his pop-culture literacy and fondness for human vices, he's been more than just surviving.

Of course, with the coming Apocalypse set to interrupt Gabriel's favorite vacation spot and his true identity laid bare, the Archangel drops the fun and games to make his intentions clear: he wants Dean to serve his purpose as Michael's vessel so that his family in-fighting can finally come to an end. It's a desperate sentimentality that lays the ache behind the jester's smirking bare.

Sentimentality is what eventually leads Gabriel to go back on his word, as well as a lifetime of indulgent self-satisfaction, in a surprising face-off against a freshly released Lucifer later in "Hammer of the Gods." Playing the hero suits his character arc thus far but does nothing for his survival rate. An emotional spat with his older brother saves Sam and Dean's lives but leaves Gabriel fatally wounded.

This is far from the end of his story, though. In a surprising twist -- though perhaps one we should have seen coming given Sam and Dean's multiple trips between life and death -- Gabriel is revealed to have pulled off a miraculous escape eight years ago thanks to the illusions that Lucifer dismissed as "hocus pocus." Gabriel seeks out the real Loki once more to help him regain his deep cover, only to be betrayed for, in Loki's eyes, allowing Lucifer to kill Odin.

In Season 13, we find him locked in a cell in Hell, gagged and broken after years of torture at the hands of Asmodeus, a Prince of Hell who Loki sold Gabriel to. Asmodeus used the Archangel's grace to juice himself up. Upon being rescued, Gabriel's road to recovery under Castiel, Sam and Dean's watch restored his powers but left him a changed being.

Much like the Old Testament incarnation of his father, the former Trickster goes on a smiting rampage, scorching the demon who held him captive and slicing his way through Loki and his crew of lesser gods, aided by the reluctant Winchesters. Revenge eventually gives way to gratitude and absolution as the youngest Archangel -- unsettled business firmly settled -- lets go of his Trickster moniker for good.

Ultimately, Gabriel's underlying tragedy and his penchant for heroics led him once again to his demise -- permanently, this time. He's persuaded by Castiel to return to his family home to prevent Heaven from falling to ruin, but first, in the wake of his perennially absent dad's second leave of absence, he has to put his affairs in order: travelling to Apocalypse World to fend off an evil, alternate universe version of his brother, Michael, keep their other brother, Lucifer, on a tight leash, and bond with his new Nephilim nephew.

No sooner did Gabriel seem poised to stop running and take charge of his cosmically chaotic family, he dies by the blade of an Archangel once again -- Michael, this time. In doing so, he also once again secures Sam and Dean's safety.

Understanding and appreciating humanity's flaws molded Gabriel into the most unpredictable and charismatic of Supernatural's higher beings. Between Michael's righteousness and Lucifer's rebellion, he was the first to offer a grounded perspective on the celestial drama that drives the entire show. After all, only a brother could get away with telling another brother that, even though they love them, they're also a "giant bag of dicks." Even if that brother happens to literally be the Devil.

Supernatural Is FINALLY Bringing Back Adam Winchester After 10 Years

Jake-Abel-as-Adam-Michael-in-Supernatural.jpg

Adam Winchester will finally make his long-awaited return in Supernatural season 15. The show first debuted on The WB back in 2005. Despite not initially being a huge ratings winner, Supernatural cultivated a passionate following that saw it survive the network's transition into The CW. That fan following only grew with each passing season, affording the show consistent renewals and its place as one of The CW's staple offerings amid its ever-expanding comic book universe. Earlier this year, however, it was announced that the 15th season would also be the last.

Played by Jake Abel, Adam was the son of Kate Milligan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's John Winchester - making him the half-brother of the show's main protagonists, Sam and Dean. They learned of Adam's existence in season 4, when they received a phone call meant for their recently deceased father. Journeying to meet their previously-unknown sibling, Sam and Dean ultimately realized it was a trap. Defeating the monster posing as Adam, they gave their fallen brother a belated hunter's funeral. Adam would return in season 5, however, serving as a vessel for the Archangel Michael after Dean refused his destiny. Although he was intended to battle Lucifer (who was possessing Sam), the latter managed to regain control of his body and willingly sealed them all in Lucifer's Cage. Sam would later have his body rescued by the angel Castiel, and then his soul returned by the embodiment of Death. Adam, however, remained one of the few Supernatural characters who never returned.

According to TVLine, that will all change in the final season. Speaking with co-showrunner Andrew Dabb, the outlet offered a few details regarding what the heroic brothers will face over the course of their swan-song. "They're going to start to lose people who, in past seasons, we would’ve never lost — and lose them in a very real way," Dabb revealed. "Our guys are going to realize there’s a certain finality, and some of the things they’ve relied on to get through the day — people, talents, things like that — they are no longer going to be able to roll out. And that’s going to throw them for a loop." Dabb went on to confirm that part of that loop will also be the return of Adam.

Adam isn't the only familiar face confirmed for the final season. Emily Swallow will reprise her role as God's sister Amara. Also known as The Darkness, Amara was last seen venturing to parts unknown alongside God (aka Chuck). The character was name-dropped in the season 14 finale, however, with Chuck quipping that she was busy gambling in Reno. Shoshannah Stern will also return as deaf hunter Eileen Leahy, who was previously killed off in season 12.

The return of Adam, however, will indeed hit the hardest with longtime fans of the show. People have questioned whether he would one day be saved. Despite the occasional mention, such as in the landmark 200th episode, it never came to pass. Dabb didn't reveal in which episode Adam will return, or how prominent he will feature. It would be easy to predict just how he could return, though, given that season 14 ended with Chuck literally unleashing the entirety of Hell on The Winchesters. As such, Adam would no doubt serve as a particularly resonant torment for them to have to face. Equally, it remains to be seen just what condition Adam will be in. After all, time has been noted as moving differently in Hell, with 10 years on Earth being closer to 1200 years there. Given that, and the fact that Adam's return also opens the door for a vengeful Michael to also return, fans will presumably wonder now whether Adam will ultimately be friend or foe.

Supernatural Could Return After Season 15 On One Condition

Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, teased the fact that Supernatural might not be gone for good. As fans, and even the actors themselves, prepare to say goodbye, Pedowitz’s comments suggest that he’s in no hurry to let go of the monster-hunting drama which has spanned 15 seasons.

Back in March, the Supernatural stars announced season 15 would be the show's last. In a video posted to Jared Padalecki’s account on Twitter, the actor appeared alongside co-stars Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins to break the news. Clearly holding back emotion, the trio said that though they were excited about the upcoming 15th season, it would be the end. Since then, renewed focus has been given to the stalwart series which has been on the air since 2005 and that same trio has been giving interviews and expressing sentiments about the need for a satisfying final episode.

Pedowitz, who has been president of The CW since 2011, wasn’t singing quite the same true. Per CBR, while giving remarks at the recent Television Critics Association press tour, he openly expressed his reluctance to part with the Winchester brothers. “If you can convince them to come back,” he said, “I’m open!” While the comment, on its own, certainly has a playful bent, Pedowitz revealed that he’s had long and sad conversations with Ackles and Padalecki, as well as producers, about the fact that Supernatural is wrapping up.

For his part, speaking at the same event, additional sources have reported that Ackles wouldn’t rule out returning to the role of Dean Winchester at some point in the future. It’s a journey Ackles didn’t believe would ever be completely over. Though he remained adamant about walking away for the time being, he described it as ‘foolish’ to permanently close doors or burn bridges.

Additionally, it was revealed that the premiere of the 15th season would pick up right where the shocking 14th season finale left off. The first episode has already been filmed and it seems to suggest that Dean will be a little bloody and worse for wear. With writers on the show promising a true ending and a different experience, and assuring that each episode carries with it a measure of finality, fans will be in store for a few definite shocks when Supernatural returns for its last set of 20 episodes in a few months. Though if Pedowitz has his way, maybe not. For his concluding remarks, the network president struck a note of thanks. “You will always have a home here,” he said

“You and me versus every soul in hell? I like those odds,” Dean tells Sam atop the trailer for Supernatural‘s 15th and (sniff) final season. And, honestly, so do we.

The CW drama’s final outing — which kicks off Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8/7c with an episode titled “Back and to the Future” — forces the Winchester boys to re-battle the ghouls and goblins (and everything in between) that they’ve already sent to hell, making this a worthy encore for longtime fans of the series.

Of course, it’s still anyone’s guess how the brothers’ adventures will end in 2020. “I always said I wanted them both to die,” Jared Padalecki revealed during the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con this summer. “I always said, ‘[Like] Butch and Sundance,’ and people would yell at me and throw stuff.”

As he later explained, “I think that was my way of saying I want them to achieve peace. I feel like Sam and Dean find some version of peace. Whether or not that’s alive or dead, or if Amara possesses me or whatever the situation is, I feel like they find more peace than when the season starts.”

When it comes to twists, Supernatural saved one of its biggest for its final season: As viewers learned in the season 14 finale, God is not good. At least he isn’t anymore.

When the Winchesters realized that Chuck had been scripting their entire lives and decided to stop playing along, God welcomed them to the end of the world by killing Jack and then opening the gates of hell, leaving them surrounded by zombies. But when it comes to Castiel, God’s turn to the dark side is only so surprising. “Cas actually gave up on his dad, God, in season 9 I wanna say,” Misha Collins tells EW. “I think that he has come to terms with the fact that God is not going to be the father figure that he had hoped for. So I think the pill is a little easier to swallow of God showing up and being the big bad.”

That being said, Collins does admit it’s a “shock to the system” for Castiel and the Winchesters. “This is, as far as we know, the most powerful being in the universe and he’s against us, and we thought he was good,” Collins says. And with this twist, they’re also dealing with the fact that their entire lives have been brought into question. Did God script their every move up until this point? “I think more than anything it’s about adjusting how we frame our existence,” Collins says.

But God and the question of free will aren’t the only things on Castiel’s mind when season 15 begins. More than anything, he’s thinking about Jack. “Cas is not coping well with Jack’s death because he feels responsible,” Collins says. “He made a promise that he was going to protect Jack and now, not only did Jack sort of turn toward the dark side, but he also died and it feels like a huge failure for him.”

Supernatural returns Thursday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

EW has confirmed that Padalecki has joined CBS TV Studios’ reimagining of Walker, Texas Ranger. The new project, called Walker, is in development and will update the original action-packed series, which was on the air from 1993 to 2001 and starred Chuck Norris as Cordell Walker, a member of the Texas Ranger Division. Padalecki will take over the role of Cordell Walker, who’s described as “a man finding his way back to his family while investigating crime in the state’s most elite unit. Our broken widower and father of two returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years for a high profile case – only to discover that there’s even more work to be done at home. In a nod to the original series, Walker and his new partner — one of the only women in Texas Rangers’ history — are the modern day heroes our world needs, following their own moral code to fight for what’s right, regardless of the rules.” The series is yet to find a network.

For now, Padalecki is hard at work filming his final 20 episodes as Sam Winchester. Before Supernatural, which premiered in 2005, the actor was best known for his work as Dean Forester on The WB’s Gilmore Girls.
