TV Debate: Should Dwayne Wayne have chosen Denise or Kinu INSTEAD of Whitley? (A Different World) 35th Anniversary!

Kadeem doesn't get near enough credit...had the honor of meeting him once (funny I realize now I have met MANY of the actors from the Cosby Show and Different World over the years)

this man (and Dr. Cosby) were DIRECTLY responsible for me seeing college as not a choice but a definitive destination. A Different World influenced THOUSANDS of young Black kids to go to school and Black Pride etc.

He made being SMART cool damn I had his glasses and leather satchel

But I have met engineers who have told me just like Spock and Kirk inspired future NASA scientists, D. Wayne inspired young Black men to go into math and computing.

As a kid this was the very reason why I wanted to go to college. The interaction, the knowledge...and I also wanted to dress like a female Dwayne. Who didn't want those glasses?!

Go Freddie go...wait Freddie wait:lol: I remember that

Real Talk,, she is one of the few people love that show that still out here making money in the entertainment business. you hear her on more commercials than you even realize

I lost count how many cartoons alone I've heard her voice on. I don't remember the last time I've seen her acting and not voice overs, but chick got to stay paid. Can't be mad at that.

Honestly...Denise ain't looking for Dwayne. She so damn hands off...ends up with a military husband who travels half the time and a step daughter that spends more time with her parents than her. Chick probably still (in the terms of the world of the two shows) ain't ready for some hands on love like Dwayne be dishin'.

Whomever said Kinu probably would have changed Dwayne...I think you right. I remember over the show different people tried to get Dwayne to go in different directions...that juxtaposition of Ron trying to find his direction...Ron was always doing something while Dwayne was always at a crossroads standing trying to make a decision. One of the reasons why Whitley made it to the alter without him in the first place. Dude probably would have been a pencil pusher because it made Kinu happy.

As for Kim...I loved Kim. Loved her then as the voice of reason and I love her now knowing that we all know a Kim. That fine level headed chick who is just normal. I mean you got spoiled Whitley and Freddie jumping around, there had to have been some balance...

EDIT:

Oh yea...if ya'll serious about that kickstarter project...even if it's not ADW...something along those lines...I know folks born in the late 80's who HAVE NOT SEEN THIS SHOW. They looked at me like I was crazy...just imagine the response from someone born in the nineties...kids born in 1996 up for graduation in May/June...that influence is just gone...if you can start something go for it.

Missed this thread the first go around. BGOL taking me back again. Hip hop used to be just like this before the gangstas took over in late 80s early 90s. Hate to sound like an old geezer but real is real.

Nobody has duplicated anything close to that show before or after it was on the air. Just real folks that happen to be black. No thugs no hoodrats no reality tv and no worldstar.

Funny how your taste changes

as a kid I thought Whitley was dope, saw it on TV One the other day and wasn't impressed. She's ok, but it was the light skin thing.

I find Freddie more attractive now, but the air head shit :smh:

and Kinu was wack to me. She was skinny and the broad looked 40.

Denise was GOAT Different World

I hated how on Different World they got lazy and started intermingling...Old as Colonel and Julessa and Ron and Freddie and Kim.

To be a bitch ass nigga?

As far as character dynamics were concerned.. I believe that Dwayne Wayne and Denise Huxtable was supposed to be the on again/off again couple but Lisa Bonet didn't work out so that got shifted to Whitley. Freddie was brought in as a replacement for Denise and was almost the same type of character, bohemian/hippy in style, clueless freshman in need of a surrogate big sister. With Denise the big sister was supposed to be Jaleesa but they didn't pair her up with Freddie. Her main go to friend was Kim and Kim became BFFs with Whitley which left Jaleesa oddman out so they paired her with Col. Taylor which seemed like a forced fit.

By the 4th season we also see Ron grew more into his own character. In the first two seasons he was more of toady/junior partner for Dwayne but in the episode where they join a frat, Dwayne dropped out while Ron finished and that established his own character in its own right (great episode). Ron ran thru half coed friends...he fucked Kim and Freddie and made a play for Whitley (Jaleesa being the only one he didn't go for). I always felt sorry for Jaleesa she was the character the writers really didn't seem to know what do with once Denise was off the show. After Walter (Sinbad) left she just kinda lingered on the fringe. She was too old and mature to hook up with Dwayne or Ron...none of the other female characters ever gravitate towards her. Freddie had Kim, Kim had Whitley and Whitley and Jaleesa never really got along. By the end she wasn't in the last season or last episode.

Prince?

Lisa Bonet = Denise is very difficult and resentful towards Bill Cosby and the whole NBC experience. I always wanted to run Kim the medical student with the big ass

Bitches everywhere lost their collective minds during that scene. Dwayne's pussy rate skyrocketed like Rick Ross blood pressure after a krispy kreme binge.

Great writing ^^^ : LOL:

whitley was right on to me. denise was too boring not enough challenge. maybe if she coulda been sexier.....maybe.

The wife and I was watching the episode where Vanessa and her friend pretended to be French exchanged students and went out on a date with Dwayne and Ron. Vanessa was so excited to be on a date with Dwayne because she knew he was crazy about her big sister Denise.

Claire out to dinner with an executive from Kenosha who was also a Hillman alumni ran into her and busted Vanessa. Dwayne had no idea that she was Denise’s younger sister and was so young. Claire left Dwayne there to have dinner with the executive from Kenosha, where he would get the internship.

The internship that led to him meeting Kinu, that led to him meeting Whitley back from Japan on the plane where she decided she liked him. The internship that eventually led to his employment with Kenosha, and he and Whitley going off to Japan on the series final.

I commented to the wife about how when we were in college at HBCU’s it was so reflective of our lives as students. Now, that we are parents of daughters attended and soon to be attending and HBCU it is just as reflective of our lives as parents.

We actually have gone from identifying with Dwayne and Whitley to now identifying with Cliff and Claire.

I've been re-watching the series on one of the streaming services and I just finished the first season. I thought I'd share some things I never noticed or forgot about that first season of the show. (In the style of all those Top 10 things you never knew about x web articles)

1. The pilot episode (where Marisa Tomei's character was introduced) was actually the second show chronologically. So the first episode I watched was where Denise and Jaleesa's characters clash as roommates and Denise tries out being Whitley's roommate which of course is worse. Does anyone remember if they ever aired that first episode during the first run? It wouldn't have made sense to do it after the pilot.

2. Jaleesa, Denise, Whitley all were sophomores the first season, not freshmen like I thought. But it makes sense because they already either knew each other or knew of each other. Maggie was the transfer character.

3. I knew the show got re-tooled after the second season when Debbie Allen got brought in, but I didn't realize how much until after re-watching the first season. There was nothing HBCU about Hillman at all that first season. They would show misc white background characters in most crowd scenes. The worst episode of Season 1 was "Wild Child" where they featured some weirdo white chick named "Cougar" who was attending classes for free. It really was "A different world" at Hillman after season 1. Thank God.

4. The Wayans - Kim Wayans was frequent member of the extended group of girls who lived in Gilbert Hall. But I had forgotten about the episode that featured Keenan as a visiting lecturer, Damon as a campus DJ along with Kim.

5. Denise was portrayed as a total idiot in that first season. Intellectually lazy, academically challenged, and financially irresponsible. No wonder Bonet opted out after one season. I think they were trying to show how college was more challenging for some students to adapt to than others, but Denise just came off as whiny and spoiled.

6. Jasmine Guy rarely got show off her dancer physique as her character was supposed to be uber conservative, but there were was a couple of episodes where she was in her lingerie or yoga outfit that definitely made a brother pay attention. She was a slim goody for sure.

7. Stevie vs Lettie - Loretta Devine vs Mary Alice. Not really sure why they replaced the Gilbert Hall Resident Director role midway thru the first season, but I would have liked to seen what they did with Loretta's single mom character in future seasons.

8. What happened to Millie? Millie was basically Whitley's personal assistant to help her in her schemes against the other characters. Her and Ron hooked up one episode, but the Millie character was phased out after season 1.

9. Maggie - Marisa Tomei's was on to bigger and better things, but her character was actually pretty good balance to super serious Jaleesa and space cadet Denise.

10. The show dramatically improved after season 1, but most of the basic character elements where there in the first season. Cree Summer's Freddie was like Denise with a more creative backstory. Kim Reese filled the vacuum of a departing Maggie and offered a more realistic view of a student with real world concerns. But the basic character interactions stayed in place.

I really hope they do a reboot.

This was never purposely done. It had more to do with Bonet being a difficult worker and opting to take a less present and demanding role while she pursued outside interest like family and work in film. Once she got preggo Cos took her off and brought her back to the OG show in a part time role before getting the boot all together a few seasons later. The bitch was an ingrate. Cosby built an entire show around her and she basically gave him her ass to kiss.

This is so true I feel bad when people forget Cosby's influence especially today. Dr Huxtable stayed rocking them HBCU sweatshirts too giving them publicity too.

Lisa Bonet is just to lightweight as an actress. Her whole vibe is to be this ethereal mysterious type. She couldn't carry a show no matter how well it was packaged. All of her movie rolls are like this. She's never the main chick or wife. Always the ex or the side bitch.

She broke bad with that Angel Heart joint, but she never even went back for those type roles.

I will give her this, her bit parts in Drunk History were quite good.

ADW was the ish...one of the best most positive shows on tv. the influence was incredible esp on the dress the style the culture the knowledge and situations that were addressed on the show. brothers learned quite a lot even if they didn't know they were learning. black history.

imm a say ill take all...whitley, kinnu, freddy, denise, Maggie, jalisa, kim, and even that big mouth girl who couldn't never shut up. lol.
