Ladies, how does turpentine break a fever? Every time it has been placed under the bed of the ill person, the fever goes away.

My momma said.....
If you have a cold put some sugar in a spoon and put 2 or 3 drops of it on the spoon. Then hold it over a flame. Then eat it. It will cut flem and congestion in your chest. She never heard of anything under the bed-and she stresses her great-grandmother (former slave) never told her about that either.
Wish I could help![]()
sounds like a old time remedy
might wanna ask ur grandma
I've used it. How does it break the fever? I don't know. I just know it does. I believe it has something to do with the reactions and what not. You're asking HOW, i guess that's something you're going to have to google boo.
You get a bowl and put it under the bed, or under the pillow even. And the babalawo say that it soaks up the sickness into the bowl, and then you throw the bowl away. Could be.
I do the spoon and turp drops myself but only when other methods don't work. We never get sick, us adults, and the older kids, only my young ones for some reason. I also use it to relieve cramps, arthritis, *yes i'm an old lady....*
Camphor and Eucalyptus in Vicks owes that power to the chemistry of the essential oils. Vicks works great.![]()
Is that what it is?
I won't say Vicks doesn't work great but as an old remedy I had to eat it, and I hated it. Like I said it works great...but just disgusting.
...
Maybe we need an Old Country Remedy thread cause I can think of some more to add.
It is
I've had it done on me, I do it with my children and it works. Moms moms did it on her too...put it under the bed right where the pillow is...
Now I've been told a cut red onion will cure a cold. Haven't tried it though. There are all sorts of things that we can't explain but it works
The one I hated though was the Vick's Vapor Rub. Disgusting.
Lawd who made you eat that shit?
It works great EXTERNALLY. I suggest it to some of my clients all the time and I use it too, or some natural variation because you can buy the essential oils and mix them how you need. I do a lot with EO's. Many are safe to take internally but you have to have high quality and know what you are doing so you don't poison yourself. Eating Vicks sounds atrocious!
In mozambique they eat bits of the plant. I'm convinced that it's poisonous. I don't think you're supposed to ingest it but i also think that if you take it with something it negates the effect. I took some dragonroot and foxgloove 1 time for something i was doing wound up poisoning myself almost wound up in a coma. The problem i had was i didn't have a nullifier to take away the full effect of that concoction of plant.
That's why I prefer japanese kampo herbal remedies or TCM formularies rather than big doses of single herbs. Most real chinese/japanese formularies are in a combination in consideration of exacting what you mentioned. Poisons are medicines too (hell most pharmaceuticals have devastating side effects hence why people often need prescriptions to counteract prescriptions). A good herb formula has to have balance.
I like this guys herbs too though I don't agree with all his diet "advice". www.dherbs.com I've been pretty pleased with the quality of his teas and they worked well for me.
You sis, are a sis after my own heart. I started using herbals for things 8 years ago and i'm still learning. Studying and will always be open for more.
w00t!!!
Unless it's the Gyn or something is broken and bleeding, I pretty much take care of myself with diet, exercise, herbs, acupressure bodywork and acupuncture. Acupuncture got me started on the natural journey many years ago. I'll be taking some Chinese herbal training next year from an acupuncturist.
Keep studying! My massage therapist was also an aromatherapist and I took a course with her and was so impressed with all the things you can do with a good quality essential oil. I also took a training with an acupuncturist who uses essential oils extensively.
I'm into the east/west vibe. All cultures have really important and valuable herbal traditions. A lot of sistas are using aryuvedic things for natural hair! I hope to observe some African herbals when I get back to Ghana (hopefully this Spring).
I spent most of my time in Mozambique learning this stuff, and then when i came back to the US i just kept going and learning. I've dipped into Yoruba and their medicinals. The eastern stuff i haven't really gotten into that much i know of it. Just haven't gone into study. I would like to learn the things that our ancestors would have passed down to us had ya know...that little thing called slavery had happened.
back home they use it in wounds...but drinking it???turpentine?
use that shit and you will die.

Sweets i use all sorts of natural remedies. Onions are GREAT for their health properties. I use onions in a LOT of food. I'm telling you, stop the processed foods, go more natural and you'll discover the person you were really supposed to be health wise.
turpentine?
use that shit and you will die.

Stop using the white mans medicine. The earth has provided everything you need to cure whatever ails you.
MEL!! I thought we were the only one who had to eat Vicks! My mom would put it in a spoon w/ a little sugar! And it would have us clear as hell the next day!
I always wondered if it was the secret ingredient in Vick Theraflu![]()

camphor, menthol, turpentine are not meant to be eaten, but work well externally. People giving their children that in 2010 should be charged.I'm lucky to be alive. By today's standards my grandma would be incarcerated for child abuse all the crap she gave me as a child.
Turpentine, eaten Vick's salve, nails on a string around my neck to stop nose bleeds, warm oils into the ear I've had all that. But I have never heard of putting anything under the bed or a pillow.
BTW there's nothing wrong with getting old. It beats the hell out of the alternative.![]()

You continue to intrigue, are you saying you do your own acupuncture?![]()

MO!!!!!!!!! I think I need to make a phone call.....
How are you?
there are lots of things we ingest that won't kill us, but that does not mean that it is right to keep eating them. Pica, anyone? So my point is what we took obviously didn't kill us so Grandma was right.

Which is why I originally said '...in 2010...'. All western medicines are based on medicinal plants or antibodies. So it's really just an extension of or improvement on what older civilizations did.Pica indeed but my saying grandma was right should not be misconstrued as my condoning her actions. All I'm saying is it got me past those illnesses. However I would never give anyone or use of those substances today.
Our mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers used what knowledge they had then to keep us alive. Call it medicine man magic, voodoo or whatever but there's no denying they knew something.
An let's not ignore the fact the medical industry isn't doing anything to cure any of today's illnesses. Remember they only treat...there's no long term money in curing diseases.
