I used to think like that until the recession hit 2008/2009 and my car got broken into twice within one month. When people are desperate, you have (often jumpy and criminally inept) people targeting the rest of us who don't live behind gated communities.
Yes, employment is preferred and most want to make money legally (majority are working and still struggling) but I'll gladly pay more taxes to provide help. Social safety nets keep us safe.

I have a heart condition. When I was diagnosed 3 or so years ago, I was told to avoid salt. Almost everything is loaded. It's only been within the past 12-16 months that there has been a good selection of low sodium staples. Many cropped up just in the past 6 months or so. People with other conditions like liver and kidney issues have to avoid it also.

Distributing these canned goods is gong to cost WAY more than issuing food stamps will. The supermarket lobbyists will raise hell too.
The food stamp program is not perfect. Sometimes it even gets abused, but it works. Everyone gets fed, industry gets paid, and it costs the public less than $.50/year in taxes. Why fuck with it?

Actually American cheese with a high milk content is really good. It's not easy to find one with good flavor tho. I buy the Land O Lakes white American cheese. It makes excellent grilled cheese or grilled honey smoked turkey and cheese sandwiches.

I love American cheese on burgers. In fact no cheese comes close to American cheese on a burger. Its amazing. Other than that I can't eat it. It needs to only be on a burger.
I was diagnosed with HBP and it was doing enough damage to cause congestive heart failure. I didn't have health insurance so I wasn't going to the doctor. That's why I disappeared for about a year a while back. I was feeling horrible for months before, and then I just had more important things to worry about for a bit.
