RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Army said Friday it was investigating a claim that dozens of soldiers who refused to attend a Christian band's concert at a Virginia military base were banished to their barracks and told to clean them up.
Fort Eustis spokesman Rick Haverinen told The Associated Press he couldn't comment on the specifics of the investigation. At the Pentagon, Army spokesman Col. Thomas Collins said the military shouldn't impose religious views on soldiers.

"If something like that were to have happened, it would be contrary to Army policy," Collins said.

Pvt. Anthony Smith said he and other soldiers felt pressured to attend the May concert while stationed at the Newport News base, home of the Army's Transportation Corps.

"My whole issue was I don't need to be preached at," Smith said in a phone interview from Phoenix, where he is stationed with the National Guard. "That's not what I signed up for."

Smith, 21, was stationed in Virginia for nearly seven months for helicopter electrician training when the Christian rock group BarlowGirl played as part of the "Commanding General's Spiritual Fitness Concerts."

Smith said a staff sergeant told 200 men in their barracks they could either attend or remain in their barracks. Eighty to 100 decided not to attend, he said.

"Instead of being released to our personal time, we were locked down," Smith said. "It seemed very much like a punishment."

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation first reported on the Christian concert. The foundation said it was approached by soldiers who were punished for not attending or offended by the religious theme of the event.

The group's president, Mikey Weinstein, claims Christian-themed events are "ubiquitous" throughout the military, and he credited the soldiers for stepping forward.

"Whenever we see this egregious, unconstitutional religious tyranny our job is to fight it," he said.

Smith said he and the other soldiers were told not to use their cellphones or personal computers and ordered to clean up the barracks.

About 20 of the men, including several Muslims, refused to attend the concert based on their religious beliefs, he said.

Smith said he went up the chain of command and traced the concert edict to a captain, who said he simply wanted to "show support for those kind of events that bring soldiers together."

While not accepting blame, the officer apologized to the soldiers who refused to attend the concert and said it was not his intent to proselytize, he said.

"But once you get in there, you realize it's evangelization," Smith said.

I believe it 100%, it happens I have seen it...this wrong.:smh:

The Constitution is in jeopardy if this is accurate.

The Army will delay and deny.

The poor soldiers will be drummed out or ostracized to the point of
useless military careers and America will turn a blind eye:smh:

I'll keep up with this to see the fallout...I hope I'm way off but my
experiences tell me not:(

Please tell me they where not BLACK SOLDIERS or at least some
of them were not cause if they were black I'm going to be sick:angry:

no diss to military cats....but

Cats will fight a war that began on unscrupulous grounds, occupy a country against its will, and create a police state where innocents are oppressed and murdered....all directed by "following orders"....but

Cats are upset when they are "ordered" to stay in barracks for not going to a Xtian concert?

"Point of view" and "perspective" are bitches huh?

What the hell did they think was going to happen? That's what we did when we didn't go to organized religious functions. I guess they thought they would be able to go to the Barracks and play video games. It's the dam Army not summer camp. Always somebody hearing one side of the issue, and running to the media.

You gotta look at it this way, during times of war the only thing a soldier has is a little break in the Navy they call it "liberty" in the Army they call it "R&R" during which time you can leave the base or ship and you have to return by a certain time and sometimes it's on-base but it's still free time.

If you been working hard doing your job stressed out by the looming pressure of it all you look forward to that time...for some combat troops it may be the last time in their life to enjoy what the hell they are fighting for.

You make plans maybe to see a girl or just be the hell away from base..it could be anything...then at the last minute you are not ORDERED you are not told it is MANDATORY...your just encouraged by those who outrank you to attend a fucking Xtian concert.:hmm:

So you say I'm not going because I planned on doing something else with my lil' bit of time and you get the equivalent of punished?

THESE WHERE NOT ORDERS THESE WHERE BETWEEN THE LINES
BULLSHIT, IF A SOLDIER DOESN'T OBEY ORDERS THAT'S HIS ASS,
IF A COMMAND DOESN'T OR CAN'T GIVE ORDERS WHAT IS THAT?

THERE WHERE NO ORDERS BECAUSE THEY CAN'T ORDER YOU TO
ATTEND THAT SHIT, SO WHY THE BACKLASH...

FOR THOSE WHO SAY WUTS THE BIG DEAL? I"M WILLING TO BET THOSE BARRACKS WHERE INSPECTION CLEAN ALREADY...:smh: SO BASICALLY THEY GOT PUT ON PUNISHMENT AND LOCKED UP!

Nah...you cant be in the conquest, and then get mad when you have to follow your side religion....fuck them.

Can't speak for the Navy, but he's in Advance Individual Training (AIT). He's not even considered a soldier yet, because he's still in training. There is very little down time when you're in training, especially while working in a very long AIT like aircraft electrician. Area beautification, or "GI party" is what we use to call it when all the soldiers went to organize functions, and some thought they could just go back to the Bs, and chill out. Believe me, in the eyes of the drill sergeant, the barracks will never be up to standards.;)

So are you saying the Army spokesman at the Pentagon is wrong?

At the Pentagon, Army spokesman Col. Thomas Collins said the military shouldn't impose religious views on soldiers.

THANK YOU FOR THE CLARIFICATION, I UNDERSTAND NOW THEY WHERE TECHNICALLY NOT OUT OF BOOT YET ON THE LAST LEG...:smh::smh::smh:

WHEN I SPOKE OF HAVING EXPERIENCED THIS IT WAS WHEN WE WHERE
IN BOOT CAMP:D

YES I WENT TWICE IT WAS A CHORUS RECITAL AT THE CHAPEL...I WAS HAPPY TO ATTEND BETTER THAN HANGING AROUND THE BARRACKS.

WOW THESE GUYS ARE FUCKED, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN POST BOOT CAMP SOLDIERS BEING FORCED TO ATTEND.:smh::smh:

DUMMIES...YOUNG AND DUMB:(

Yea if the alternative is to be banished to the baracks to clean.. isn't that like imposing religion on someone?

No I'm not... the Colonel just made a statement that was a fact. The Army don't "Impose" religion on anyone. What you have is a person who was upset with the alternatives from going to a concert. But then again, sometimes we have to look at the agenda of those who report such issues...

Yea if the alternative is to be banished to the baracks to clean.. isn't that like imposing religion on someone?

 If you want to describe it as "Banishing" be my guess. Maybe the trainee felt that the Drill Sergeant could have been "cool", and let them chill at the local Mall, while the concert was taking place. Again, It's the Army.

slow down tough guy.. I didn't make up the word.. that is what the article said.

Yeah it is definitely implied but in Boot Camp and Training school
you have NO real personal time, I think you get like one (the last) weekend break after boot and weekends in training most times you
aren't even allowed off base.

They tell you participate in base functions (they even announce that shit base wide on loud ass speakers) and follow the lead of your company commander or drill sgt., this was one thing they should have just
attended and kept it moving.

...bottom line they should have done everything afforded to them, then
graduated training, got their orders report to their command, got settled in
and then decided what they wanted to do in their free time.

NOT during boot camp or school.

Lastly, why are trying to make it seem like these "soldiers" are not soldiers. This wasn't "basic training".

In a hundred years athiest will probably blame the war on christianity when theres nowhere in the bible that orders this.

That is not my word.. that is what the article stated.

Also, why are you trying to make is seem like AIT is boot camp. AIT is Tech School. It is AFTER you graduate boot. Lastly, like the Col. said, that is wrong to force someone to attend a religious concert with the alternative being a form of punishment.

Bottom line, it was wrong. If other troops are attending a religious recreational even), you can't punish the other troops with cleaning detail. Most these AIT schools have recreation rooms, they should have been allowed to play pool or whatever in the rec rooms.

Bruh...I'm not being a tough guy, I'm just having a civil debate with you. But here's the part that shows the individual was in training.

Smith, 21, was stationed in Virginia for nearly seven months for helicopter electrician training when the Christian rock group BarlowGirl played as part of the "Commanding General's Spiritual Fitness Concerts."

Like I said sometimes we have to consider the source...

Yea but you are arguing that there is nothing wrong with what happened... and the fact remains, the Pentagon (who is in charge of all military branches) disagrees with you.

That is not the way the military works. Yes, some people in the military try to force their religious views on you.. but send that shit to EEO and it will be squashed with the quickness. Try telling a Jewish cat in the military that he cant wear his funny lil hat and see what happens.

Quick question Divine have you ever been in the Armed Services?

Okay...Okay this will be my last entry in this thread. This is the statement from the Pentagon Spokesman (look at the article).

Fort Eustis spokesman Rick Haverinen told The Associated Press he couldn't comment on the specifics of the investigation. At the Pentagon, Army spokesman Col. Thomas Collins said the military shouldn't impose religious views on soldiers.

Nowhere does it says being "Banished" to perform a task that soldiers do on a normal basis was wrong.:rolleyes:The soldier should be happy that his buddies who went to the concert came back to a nice clean lartrine (That's what they call the restrooms in the Army).;)

True Shit!!!

OK...u should know better then..coming from one Veteran to another!

Over the years, having supervised many different people in the military, from all backgrounds. The one thing I learned was DO NOT FUCK WITH PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR RELIGIOUS FREEDOMS> That is the fastest way to find yourself on the other end of a EEO investigation. I've seen cats get away with a lot of shit (some legitimate some not) all because they claimed it to be part of their religious right. It is something that you do not touch in the military.
