Trailer: Leave The World Behind

Aside from the actors who played their parts well, the writing was trash. The characters did not in any way act like normal people would act within such an event, like keeping vital information to themselves?

My biggest gripe was Mahershala Ali’s character acting all secretive in the beginning for no fucking reason. He knew he rented his home to those people, why play all coy with the family and audience? What came out of it? Absolutely, nothing.

The way the animals were acting (deer and flamingos) with no payoff?

It was just was mediocre film, the more I dissect it.

He didn't want to panic his daughter. Same shit Julia Robert's character was doing. The only people that could see reality were the kids, because they didn't have to duty to protect the other's sanity.

Leave The World Behind & Mr. Robot's Shared Universe Explained

Many subtle easter eggs in Leave the World Behind suggest it unfolds in the same universe as Sam Esmail's Mr. Robot. Starring Ethan Hawke, Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Myha'la Herrold, Netflix's Leave the World Behind is a gripping apocalyptic thriller that initially promises a big reveal with its slow build-up but delivers something that is far more thought-provoking than one would expect from a movie about the end of the world. While at it, the film also entertains by dropping several easter eggs and references to other movies and shows.

While some of these easter eggs are mere namedrops, others hold immense narrative significance. For instance, Leave the World Behind's obsession with Friends is a direct reflection of its core theme surrounding the impact of media and technology on humanity. Even when it comes to the movie's nods to Mr. Robot, there is more to them than meets the eye.

Mr. Robot References In Leave The World Behind Explained

In its runtime of 2 hours and 20 minutes, Leave the World Behind drops several intriguing Mr. Robot references. For instance, E-Corp's logo can be spotted on several electronic gadgets in the film and can be seen on Julia Robert's character's laptop. In Mr. Robot's lore, E-Corp (labeled as Evil Corp by Elliot) is a conglomerate that not only manufactures laptops, tablets, and phones but also controls about 70% of the global consumer credit industry. In an early scene from the movie, Kevin Bacon's character loads yellow Five/Nine survival kit tubs in his truck.

In another blink-or-miss moment from Leave the World Behind, audiences may also notice Irwing's Beach Towel novel in the central house. Myha'la Herrold's Ruth also talks about a hacking incident that led to the meltdown of a nuclear powerplant in New Jersey, which, like the Five/Nine reference, is another nod to Mr. Robot's Washington Township toxic waste scandal, which temporarily collapsed America's economy in the show's storyline. Considering how these throughlines between the show and movie are enough to establish they are set in the same universe, it is not surprising that even Sam Esmail confirmed it (via EW).

How Being Set In The Mr. Robot Universe Makes Leave The World Behind Even Better

Like Leave the World Behind's adult characters, Mr. Robot's Elliot is inclined towards blaming a few individuals and organizations at the top for all societal problems. However, the more Leave the World Behind progresses, the more Mahershala Ali's George opens about how no one is in control during the apocalypse and how the "vast conspiracy explanation is lazy, and the truth is much more terrifying." This allows Leave the World Behind to expand the ideas and vision set up by Mr. Robot by portraying how even leading forces like the Deus group that were seemingly pulling all the threads have little to no authority in a crumbling world.

What Caused The Loud Noise In Leave The World Behind (& Its Effects Explained)

The mysterious loud noise in Leave the World Behind remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the new Netflix apocalyptic thriller. Directed by Sam Esmail, the creator of the acclaimed hacker series Mr. Robot, Leave the World Behind has become one of the most popular and talked about new releases on Netflix in December 2023. The film expertly designs an unsettling doomsday scenario that feels very close to home as the United States experiences an unprecedented coordinated cyberattack aimed at destabilizing the entire country all at once.

It is never revealed in Leave the World Behind where the source of the loud piercing noise is even though it is heard throughout the atmosphere at the Long Beach, New York vacation home where the main character is staying. The noise appears to have the ability to cause mental and physical harm to people who hear it, making it seem like it is part of the coordinated attacks on the United States. The loud noise occurs in conjunction with the internet blackout, disabled satellites, and the widespread hacking of automated transportation vessels ranging from oil tankers and commercial airplanes to driverless Teslas.

Danny Suggests Leave The World Behind's Noise Was Caused By Microwave Weapons

Clay (Ethan Hawke) and G. H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) seek out doomsday prepper Danny (Kevin Bacon) for help with Clay's son Archie. Danny was the contractor on G. H.'s house but is not friendly to G. H. when he shows up with Clay on his doorstep asking for his assistance. It's unclear how much Danny knows about the whole ordeal, but he does have several intriguing theories that offer a glimpse as to what is happening with Archie, whose teeth are basically falling out of his mouth. Archie also omitted a mysterious black mass earlier in the film.

Danny mentions the possibility that the loud noise in Leave the World Behind is an indication of directed microwave radiation. This would explain Archie's strange and gruesome symptoms and classify them as a result of microwave radiation poisoning. Danny recalls something similar that happened not long ago in Cuba which is a reference to the real-life Havana Syndrome. In 2016, a group of American diplomats reported having nausea, headaches, and other neurological issues after hearing a loud noise that was later revealed to be targeted microwave radiation.

Leave The World Behind's Book Hints The Sound Could Be Caused By A Futuristic Plane

The Havana Syndrome connection might have been an additional detail that Esmail made specifically for his film, as the novel suggests another potential explanation for the loud piercing noise altogether. Rumaan Alam's book claims that the noise could be coming from futuristic planes that people didn't even know existed yet. The book explains that the sound is from the highly advanced airplanes flying overhead, although it's not clear what the exact purpose of the planes in the book is or who is functioning them.

The loud piercing noise in the Leave the World Behind movie doesn't sound like a plane or any type of jet-fueled aerial vessel, so it's possible that Esmail changed this aspect of the story. This would be congruent with the other references to real-life disasters made throughout the film and effectively makes the film more frightening and unsettling. A futuristic plane explanation for the loud noise in Leave the World Behind would ultimately sound fantastical and would take away from the thoughtful plausibility that Esmail achieved in the film.

How The Noise In Leave The World Behind Impacts The Characters

The noise in Leave the World Behind appears to have serious effects on the characters in both physical and psychological ways. The worst effects are clearly seen through Archie, who is presumably losing his teeth and puking black contents from microwave radiation poisoning. If what Danny is predicting about the Havana Syndrome is actually true to the noise in Leave the World Behind, then it will most likely only be a matter of time before some if not all of the other characters get sick in a similar way.

The noise also smashes through glass windows in the film, acting as a tormenting agent that completely overrides their senses. The psychological element of not knowing what the noise is, what it does, or where it's coming from also takes a great toll on the characters, as does all the other bizarre and confusing things that are happening around them. The novel explains that the noise comes from highly advanced planes flying overhead, however, the piercing sound in the Leave the World Behind movie makes it seem like it's another Havana Syndrome situation.

‘Leave the World Behind’ Easter Eggs: How The Paintings Change With The Movie’s Plot

You’ll want to put down your phone if you watch Leave the World Behind on Netflix this weekend. The new psychological thriller movie, which began streaming on Netflix today, comes with plenty of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details. For those familiar with the movie’s writer and director, Sam Esmail, from his Easter Egg-filled series Mr. Robot, that won’t come as a surprise.

Leave the World Behind, which is based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, follows the story of a white family (played by Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Charlie Evans, and Farrah Mackenzie) vacationing in a rental home on Long Island, who receive a surprise visit from the house’s Black owner (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter (Myha’la). As strange, apocalyptic events unfold around them, the two families navigate racial tension, suspicion, and fear. The plot is secondary to the film’s ominous tone, and one way that Esmai builds that tone is via subtle changes and Easter Eggs. One such Easter Eggs? The paintings in the rental house change over the course of the movie, to mirror the sense of growing chaos.

Fair warning: Stop reading now if you haven’t yet seen Leave the World Behind, and wish to remain unspoiled.

I find it funny that people keep saying that the characters didn't act the way normal people would act. And I think yall are basing it off of the perspective of how Y'ALL would act. Because if you haven't learned anything about being on this world for this long is that people don't do a lot of the shit that YOU would do in certain situations, most of the things people do are illogical and you can find many instances of this daily by just reading the news. So nothing, at least in my eyes, when it comes to the behavior of people is out of the realm of possibility. That's like saying a black person wouldn't do some things you've seen white people do in scary movies, but hell, take a scroll on twitter. There's many instances of black people being recorded doing the absolute illogical shit in scary moments; and the same with many other races.
Most people think they'd do something but in a time of high stress, they would abandon their own logical plans. There are too many examples of "I woulda" that have happened over the last few years, namely that school shooting where those cops had all the tactical gear, but they were too scared to engage the shooter. I'm sure they spent weeks thinking about stopping a school shooter with some awesome door breach and smoke bomb, but when shit got real, they stood in the hallway and listened to kids being murdered.

that ending was trash
fuck julia roberts racist ass
the daughter was fine as hell lil slimmie(she's 27 in real life)
that lil girl was entitled and looked like she might be missing a chromosome or 2

too many suckas in here not even knowing what they were watching talking about it was a bad movie.

:smh:

A lot of folks who are complaining about it are folks who suffer from Movie ADHD

Movie ADHD - Is a common affliction resulting in people who watch a film, within the first 5 minutes of opening credits there needs to be full blown action, full character and story development and the plot of the film fully explained during this time period. If there are any unanswered questions after the 5 minutes, the film is a certified flop.

Robert’s played a Racist Karen to perfection. The typical I’m not racist I have Black co workers type white bitch who judges Black people based on the fact they Black. She’s a great actress. I saw her at the Beverly Center a few years back I casually made a joke and said people ever told you you look like Jennifer Lawrence. She laughed mad loud and I walked off. I still wonder if her panties were wet .
