People on these TP threads, constantly throw out the word cooning, buffoonery...how are you defining cooning??...When is Black comedy not cooning???...
Yeah, but I also think that the black audience has to WANT better. They wanted better in the 90's and they GOT BETTER (Spike, John S., Hudlin Bros, etc, etc). We have done it before and we could do it again, but if they don't want quality and won't come out to support quality, well, then ain't shit anybody can do to make things better.
I and others have already stated what we consider coonin. If you disagree then so be it. I didn't consider The Cosby Show or A Different World coonin IMO.
Co-Sign 100. It goes both ways. But I truly believe most of the audiences of movies are pretty much a blank slate. You keep on feeding them the same thing, eventually they will accept it. If there was a point where the market was flooded with nothing but films of substance, people would gradually accept it. But who knows? The industry is going through some major changes at the moment, we'll just have to see how it pans.

Nah bro. It's the fact that almost consistently the only black comedy that seems to get the green light or mainstream attention is where black people act a fool. It's not about impressing others, it's about respecting ourselves to know we shouldn't be confined to such parameters.

Sorry, I don't remember questioning why you were in this thread nor did I say you should stop posting in it. This is a public forum, therefore I am entitled to express my opinions in any topic. Those are not the only black sitcoms in the world.
Family Matters, Martin, Jamie Fox show, The Wayan Bros, Fresh Prince, Steve Harvey Show, Amen and Sanford and Son all involved what you consider cooning, but these were some good shows.
From what ive seen, the Tyler Perry sitcom isnt 30 mins of someone acting like a fool, there some balance of seriousness and playfulness in it.

I wouldnt watch the show on a constant basis. What I see on the show is some conflict that needs to be resolved mixed with silly comedy. Like one episode reminded me on an episode of Good Times.

As I said earlier, all I would like to see is balance. Tyler has an audience and that's cool. Very rarely are you going to see a black equivalent of Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Friends, etc. I'm not saying there has to be a super intellectual black sitcom. All I'm saying is that there should be a balance between the type of comedy Tyler Perry does and another that caters to a different audience. As I said, black comedy shouldn't be confined inside such parochial parameters that both we and executives have allowed to happen.

I don't know what point you're trying to make, but if it is what I think it is, he was a millionaire during the era of Jim Crow laws. Somehow, I don't think Tyler has obstacles of the same barriers today. And it actually reinforces my point of how coonin shouldn't be necessary today.
Truth is - I've never seen one episode of either of his TBS shows; I just enjoy watching the same few people on BGOL salivate like Pavlov's dog whenever you see his name.

How the show was written was the argument though. People are complaining about it being over and doesnt represent blacks in a good light. The formula of the show works for those who already keep up with TP production I guess.

Well for me there has to be balance. Until there are black owned studios, channels etc. very rarely will a show get made without some level of coonin if we're to be honest. Even then, those shows you mentioned have a balanced level between shucking and jiving and substance. I just feel Tyler hasn't shown any of the latter. But as I said, he knows his limitations and he sticks to it. I ain't mad at him, I just want there to be a balance.
