Yes, but with no proof. No confirmation. George spent time at the Motown HQ writing, right? He would know virtually all the Detroit musicians of the mid to late 1960s. Someone would have recognized one of the guys from Rare Earth (a great band, by the way).

Robert Cray plays the Blues my brother. And off the top of my head I can think of at least a dozen better Blues solos.
More of a funk thread than strict R&B... so I don't know how Maggot Brain can NOT be at the very least top 3. Shit is #1 in my book.... shit, the song is like one 10 minute great solo.

why did he not sustain the riffs from the 2:53 minute mark to the 3:17 mark,
they were beautiful......I would love to have the volume of that guitar raised
and made more prominent.

Keith 6 friend - Oh my god this cannot be done. You would be hard pressed to say the Best RB songs top 5 let alone just picking a small part of a song. There are literally 10s of thousands probably. And also there is a problem with categorizing it because just because a song solo is play by a black man doesn't make it RB. Someone said Maggot Brain which is clearly not RB and more closely plain old Rock (psychedelic). Purple rain isn't even an RB song. 777-9311 makes more sense for RB as is Get It Up. But then people forget about Jungle Love solo. But this simply cannot be done. No one even has the vastness of knowledge to be able to realistically pick without extreme prejudice for an era they grew up in. Dumb List. The only thing I will give this list is that number of solos is much smaller than a white boy list because RB is based more in base guitar and guitar rhythms and groves. Whereas white boys especially in the 80s concentrate on a solo for every song practically written which would make this list even harder on that side. So I will give you such an undertaking should be easier on the RB side but still impossible.
