Don Barden was the first African-American to own a casino in Las Vegas and the first to own a major cable television franchise. He passed away at age 67 from lung cancer yesterday morning in Detroit.

Barden was a born entrepreneur. One of 13 children, as early as age nine, he built a vegetable stand out of wood and sold the vegetables raised by his family. He took a job at a shipbuilding company in ohio, rising from the mailroom to executive assistant of the CEO in two years. He attended Central State University with the goal of being a lawyer, but instead he explored a number of industries. He started a record label, a newspaper, worked in radio broadcasting, served as a city council member and conducted real estate ventures with the federal government.

In 1979, Barden founded Barden Cablevision, eventually selling it to Comcast for $105 million in 1994. Giving him capital for yet another industry, Barden began his casino ventures in 2001 with Majestic Star Company, which included two Indiana casino boats and Fitzgerald Casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada; Tunica, Mississippi and Black Hawk, Colorado. His companies would earn a combined $519 million in annual revenue. One of his biggest supporters was the late, great Michael Jackson.

Barden left a strong legacy in business, which rendered a lavish lifestyle for he and his wife. But as his investments began to unfold, so did his marriage and his health. With declining health, his wife filed to have him declared incompetent to manage his business affairs, and she continued to assist him with his health struggles.

Noted for his concern and welfare for the community, Barden was recognized by TBS cable networks, BET and Black Enterprise magazine as a top national business leader.
