Who created the Asgardians or where did they come from? From what I gather the first metahumans on earth were the Eternals who were created from experiments by the Celestials, so where did the Asgardians come from?

According to Asgardian legend, in the beginning there was nothing, but in time two worlds came into being on opposite sides of the void. The one to the north was named Niflheim, a world of clouds and shadows in whose center surged the fountain Hvergelmir, from which flowed twelve rivers of ice. The one to the south was named Muspelheim, which teemed with rivers of fire. Eventually the warm air from the south carved out the frost giant Ymir from the ice in the north. Ymir became the father of all the giants, and his cow Auðumbla licked out of the ice the first Asgardian, Buri. Buri had a son named Borr, who married the giantess Bestla. Borr and Bestla had three sons named ****, Vili, and Ve, who were known as the Æsir. **** and his brothers grew to hate the giants and slew Ymir, and his blood formed a great sea. **** and his brothers then raised Ymir's body from the sea and created Midgard between Niflheim and Muspelheim. With Ymir's bones they created mountains, and with his hair they created trees. They then raised Ymir's skull upon four pillars to create the heavens. Within the skull contained sparks from Muspelheim, which became the sun, moon, and stars. When Midgard was complete, **** and his brothers created a home for themselves above it called Asgard. Between the two worlds they stretched a rainbow bridge and called it Bifröst.Once a year **** must undertake the Odinsleep to regain his strength. During this time Asgard is vulnerable to attack from its many enemies, most notably ****'s adopted son, Loki. Loki first takes command of Asgard during the Odinsleep, using his right as the 'son' of **** before Thor could claim it, but fled when Asgard was invaded by Mangog as he realized that this new foe was too powerful.Loki later usurped the throne of Asgard by taking the Odinring, but fled again when Asgard was invaded by the fire demon, Surtur.

According to that info the Asgards claim their people created the universe, which I doubt is what happened int he marvel universe

I guess the simplest answer to your question is that Thor is a god from norse mythology which predates Christianity. The whole meta human etc... Is a comic book creation. So if you are trying to tie mythology to the comic book realm you will run into these issues constantly. Each mythology has a different origin story and each one only acknowledges itself as being in existence. Therefore you will not see any academic texts referring to Thor and Apollo and Isis co existing.

In comics they bring in "gods" from many different religions and basically treat them as another race. That is why you have Hercules and Thor being avengers together at one time. Or in dc you have wonder woman an amazon from Greek mythology interacting with humans.

Thor from Norse mythology is always described as having red hair, for some reason marvel decided they wanted him blonde. It is just an example of comics incorporating concepts from the actual world into their 'universe'. Much like the universe being used is the marvel movies is the ultimate universe. A notable difference in the ultimate universe vs the normal one is that in the normal universe you will find comics going back decades that have Nick Fury being white but in the ultimate universe they intentionally based nick fury on Samuel Jackson.

I've never read anything stating who created them. At one point I'd guessed Those Who Sit Above In Shadow were the Asgardians' creators, but since they simply feed off of the Asgardian cycle of Ragnarok it could just be that they're cosmic-level parasites of some sort...it's one of those things that's never been fully explained.

Another unexplained story is how Loki came in to existence. 0din's father was turned into snow by a mysterious wizard, which led 0din into killing the frost king and adopting his son Loki. It then turns out Loki was the mysterious wizard who killed Bori, so how does one go back in time and kill someone if they never existed?

There was some retconning at work in all this if I remember correctly. Loki didn't kill Bor; he trapped him in snow, and 0din left Bor in that state so he could rule Asgard himself. Thor killed Bor much more recently(Loki having restored Bor for his own ends)...it led to him being exiled from Asgard-in-Broxton (ha) and left a void which would lead into the Siege storyline.

The main points of all this are in Thor #12 and #600 from 2009.

I like the Earth X version of what the Asgardians are and some of that was used to described them in the Ultimate Universe.

The Asgardians are aliens that were manipulated by the Celestials. Their natural evolution over the centuries has put them in the third tier of the Celestial mutation cycle. As such, their appearance, powers, and identities are defined by the belief of others. As they are believed to be the Gods of Norse mythology therefor they have the same special adaptations. In the guise of Asgardians, these aliens have are extremely long-lived, but not immortal like the Olympians; they age very slowly upon reaching adulthood. Their body density are three times denser than normal human beings, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight.
