Thing about switching carreers: From Salary to Commission

Shurnuff

5 More Years Bitches!!
OG Investor
I've been working for a salary position for the last 10yrs but within the last 3yrs the company I work for is in finical straights and the out look is hazy. During those last 3yrs I've only seen a 2% raise, bonus of less than 1% and the company's new bonus targets are totally impossible to achieve!!!!
At this point I am tired of jumping through hoop for dog scraps.

So in my search for another job this commission base job has been on my jock for a few weeks now for me to join them as a District Manager knowing full well I would have to start at ground level with cold calls, canvasing, referrals, etc.

So for the Brothers who work these commission positions:

1. Is it worth it?

2. How long did it take for you go generate income after you started??

3. Are you happy with the commission income now?

4. Any horror story or good story to tell?

5. Is you commission income stable? or do you have to beat the pavement everyday to maintain?

Thanks

Serious answers please

Im all for more merit based commission positions.

Salaried positions = high level corruption.

Look at Bell California.

Shit...

I know of this principal who bragged on making 200k a year to a classroom of 4th graders, and his school was in COMPLETE disarray.

Commission is always the way to go if the market is right and you're a go getter. I have a few friends in sales and some of them are making a freaking killing.

I work on 100% commission. You can basically write your own pay cheque.
If you can plan for major swings in your cheque, you'll be good.

Been 100% commission for a while ... I have always been a very hard worker and I love it cause I can hypothetically make as little or as much as I want .... though the job you mentioned sounds shady - no offense ... but a lot of it is managing your time and your income IMO
... not really that hard

Also a great first step to entrepreneurship imo

I never had a "salaried" position in my life :dunno:

What type of product is it? Find a job that offers salary + commission. They are out there.

I wouldnt jump out there w/ 100% commission in this recession with no experience unless you KNEW that you could make a killing and had strong support like a mentor at work and/ or a 2nd income while you get up and running.

...and if a job is hounding you to start...in this job market...you should definitely do your research before jumping on board. they should have people beating down their doors.

Best kinda job out, my current job is like that...most managers at sales orgs today started out earning their stripe in 100%commission positions, not really the best thing to do in today's climate.

eeeeh ... investment firms is kind of a bad industry right now given what you are saying here ... however if you are young and motivated you might be able to really get it goin'

wise words ... OP if you have concerns I would definitely ask around the office you plan to work at and see what you are realistically going to have to do and what realistically you can expect to earn ... unless you are lucky or have a natural gift expect to deal with a learning curve ... should have some money on the side

They were ready to hire me after the second interview but wanted a third interview to checkout and see how things actually works. Meaning I want to do a day of traveling with one of the District Manager to see what exactly to expect.
Me asking them that kinda surprised them.

well, i wouldnt jump into 100% commission financial sales w/ no experience...today...but no matter what you decide on...

google the company. check the blog search. news search. take a look at how they're doing financially so you dont end up in the same situation.

open an account on glassdoor.com. its free and shows the salaries and peoples feedback about jobs at different companies. see if you can find some reviews on your position and others at that company you're considering.

get on linkedin.com, find someone who was in that same role and tell them you're thinking about it and ask what they think about the position and why they left. may have to hit a few people up before one is willing to open up.

check out a website called salesgravy.com. lot of jobs listed and lots of resources/ articles so that you can get yourself up to speed.

still, my advice would be to find something that pays a salary + commission in an industry thats hot.

telecom/ IT...
healthcare...

may be hard to find something entry level though depending on your city. good luck.

Still a split of about 50/50. I want to know how long did it take to generate income and was the income stable???
